No. Charleston was the first.

The crowd helped Badosa get over the line in her match vs Sevastova. She'll play Bencic next.

Double faults galore, problems with the toss and low first serve in percentage. I’ve not seen her play much-is this normal for her? I can’t remember anything like this at last years French
Iga played fearless tennis in Paris. No one had seen her before. Her last service game, three doubles, was awful.
She was R4 in Paris the year before vs Halep. Then beat Wozniacki in Toronto before giving Osaka a run or her money. I think Swiatek was well-known to her competition and die-hard fans, just not on anyone's short list for a Slam anytime soon.

Yes, in a weird year, but that might mean earlier results are dragging down her rating. I haven't looked at the parameters of an ELO, but perhaps those who have higher clay ELOs also choose to play more on clay, which could skew the rating.

I'll never give Kenin credit for that RG final and it has nothing to do with it being a weird year and everything to do with the ridiculous amount of coaching her and her father got away with throughout the tournament and how they totally gamed Ferro and her coach. Those two unsuspecting, kindhearted souls had no idea the situation they were in and got absolutely finessed.

Yes, the fans helped Badosa... but Sevastova also completely disappeared in the 3rd set.
The first 2 sets were a colossal fight - except for the 7-0 1st set tiebreak.

I give her a good chance against Bencic, if she does not let the nerves get to her. The crowd will be, again, on her side and she gets a little rest.
Of course, that statement above just sealed her fate and she will lose painfully in the third, but no more I can do.

Halep is not doing well even on clay this season. Could be a serious warning sign that she's not a top tier title contender at RG anymore.

I think Rome will be more indicative. I didn't see the match, but Halep's scoreline vs Mertens doesn't seem like a bad loss, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. But it depends on how Halep actually looked... Unless she's hurt, I'd still put her in the top 5 if I had to make a list today. At this point, Barty is the runaway favorite then 10-15 players including Halep are tied, IMO. Halep acknowledged she wasn't in top form coming into the clay season but thinks she's improving. “I was stressed before the matches, but now I feel better,” she said. “I’m getting better mentally. I can say I started to enjoy more, and I don’t feel those negative nerves anymore. So I’m in a good place now.” I think that bodes well for Rome and Paris. We'll see!

She was up a break twice in the third. Did not look comfortable out there, while Elise looked like she always believed.
I would say: nothing major. Halep lost a close match to another player that feels very well on clay. Would I bet on her for RG? No. If she wins, will I be surprised? No.

I wouldn't rule her out of course, but it seems to me she is not as strong a candidate as she was 2-3 years ago.

For RG I guess the list of players that will NOT win will be easier. Naomi, Azarenka, Serena (whom I don't think will play). We have to see if Mugu comes back in what shape she will be, but I am close to putting her in that group.
Halep is nowhere near there. As you say, not as strong a candidate as 2-3 years ago. But that tournament is going to be wide open. I say: new winner, again.

Right now Barty is the clear favorite. Muchova might be the dark horse. She just dropped a bagel set on Sakkari. But Muchova said she's still not 100% since sitting out Feb and March with an ab injury (I think). If she doesn't rest up before Paris, it might not be healed enough.

I don't have high hopes for Muguruza. Just so injury-prone. I want to have high hopes for Kvitova, but I just can't. No result from Osaka or Serena would surprise me, honestly. They're both capable of winning the title or losing in R1. On champion mindset, experience, and athleticism, they are second-tier contenders in my eyes. If they go in having done a lot of work, feeling good, and the draw breaks right, it wouldn't be as crazy as Podoroska and Trevisian's results last year.
