It wasn't in a row - Bouzas Maniero was in the middle - but it has been done before in a single tournament.

I have always found Osaka to be shockingly self-absorbed, even for a tennis player. I never get on other people for who they pull for because different opinions make the world go around, and my god, I pulled for Fognini, but it's been a mystery to me why Osaka in particular is a fan favorite. She consistently rubs me the wrong way, and her behavior last night reinforced that feeling.

Kournikova beat four slam champions in a row at the 1998 tournament in Key Biscayne--Seles, Martinez, Davenport and Sanchez-Vicarioi--before losing to Venus in three sets in the final. The trope on Kournikova, particularly from non-tennis people--is she was an over-hyped hack who only got attention because of the way she looked. She never won a tournament, but I'd say taking down those four and nearly beating Venus in the final trumped picking up random titles in Monterrey or San Diego.

Totally. It becomes an acceptable loss, although the score is still a bit worrisome.

Osaka actually checked out early in the second set. Does anyone else listen to Cam Williams's Tennis Talk during matches? He seemed to think that Osaka was upset that the crowd was so clearly against her (as he said many times, "They're not cheering against you, Naomi, they're cheering for your opponent. It's not personal against you."). I don't know if it was after the point where she hit the ball out (and received a warning), but she was mentally out of it for the last half of the match. She could hit a blazing winner, or a bad error, and had absolutely no reaction either way. And then she started playing way too fast--at one point she seemed about to start her service motion WAY before Mboko was anywhere near ready.

Yes, I quite enjoy his commentary, and the community as well.
