Maria had lost nine matches in a row entering this tournament. She had not beaten a top 20 player since her run to the Wimbledon semis in 2022. She lost to the No. 229-ranked player in the first round of a 125 grass tournament last week.
This was one of the most remarkable runs in history. After losing six games total in two qualifying matches, she ran through Fernandez, Muchova, Rybakina, Keys and Anisimova with the loss of just one set (to Muchova, who was up a set and 2-0 and then up 5-4, 0-30 in the second round). She's proven her grass bonafides before, but this truly came out of nowhere.

I thought Anisimova had the guns to take her down.
Time to revise grass court tennis? Two soft hitting players won the two grass tournaments this week. Granted, the big guns were not playing, but both Maria and Mertens hit a lot of awkward looking shots this week.

oooh!, wonderful set of data for somebody to say: "the WTA is really, really ruled by parity".jazzyg wrote: ↑Sun Jun 15, 2025 2:12 pm Maria had lost nine matches in a row entering this tournament.
