by ashkor87 Miami is a bit faster than IW but also hot and muggy, balls will feel heavy - I would expect players like Keys, Coco, Pegula, even Osaka, who train in Florida, to do well.. the heat and humidity can kill you.Is Osaka even playing?
by ponchi101 Weather expected to be around 26C for the week, and dropping, humidity at 30%.
The wind may be a bit strong but nothing proper tarps will not tame. So I say this is the perfect time of year to play tennis in Fl.

Make it a double
Tennis Watchers
Mar 17
Time for the second half of the sunshine double, Miami kicks off Tuesday! It is another 1000 level event for both the WTA and ATP.
Coverage will be on Tennis Channel/T2, with streaming on TC Plus and Tennis TV once again. Matches will start 11am Eastern Time and go throughout the day and into the night!
Check out the full guide below and enjoy the tennis!
Miami
WTA Singles Defending Champion: Danielle Collins
WTA Singles Top Seed: Aryna Sabalenka
ATP Singles Defending Champion: Jannik Sinner
ATP Singles Top Seed: Alexander Zverev

by ashkor87 Results here will be much more random than IW...the adjustment to conditions, the level of competition, the elation of some, the disappointment of others ..certainly don't expect Andreeva, Rune, Draper to be in the finals! Anisimova, Medvedev, Tsitsipas may do well..I wonder about defending champion Collins..
I am hoping for the return of Osaka and Zverev...
by Owendonovan Zverev being seeded 1 at all these tournaments feels a little silly. (I know the rankings dictate it, but no one's pegged him to win anything since his S. American mess.)

true, but given that there has been no real reason for it, it could be just a passing thing..
by ashkor87 just watched the video of last year's final - court looks significantly faster than IW.. not just faster.
Beginning to doubt Anisimova, Swiatek can do well this year here.. Medvedev will, so will Bencic. Bencic is 28-1 on the betting sites.. looks like a steal to me (unfortunately I cant bet)

Problem to me is: who is playing "well"? Agree, Zverev is not playing well to be seeded #1 at a yatzee tournament. But it is not as if Alcaraz is running the table, Medvedev is re-surging, the RU's are playing supreme tennis (Ruud, Rublev, Rune). The tour is going where I said it was going to go (I am sorry,I know that sounds very arrogant): everybody is at about the same level, with the exception of Sinner, at the moment.
Sure, Alcaraz won Rotterdam and is 15-3 for the year. And yet, it feels a bit flat.
by ashkor87 'Anyone can win' just isn't so..can basavareddy win? Bublik? Arnaldi? Dolehide? There are at most 10 people who can actually win Any given tournament.

Which is 7 more than what we were used to...

And the #12 seed just lost to the #13 seed at IW. So, maybe it is more than 12.
by Suliso When we say anyone can win we of course mean 10-15 players can win, not all 96 of course!
by Suliso Just for women I'll eat my hat if the winner is not from this group: Sabalenka, Collins, Zheng, Rybakina, Gauff, Haddad Maia, Osaka, Samsonova, Paolini, Navarro, Noskova, Anisimova, Andreeva, Shnaider, Pegula, Keys, Ostapenko, Badosa, Muchova, Bencic, Svitolina and Swiatek. That's an extended group of 22, but even some of these are super unlikely.
by ponchi101 But another thing we must consider. It is not only who can and will win any given tournament. You cannot measure parity just that way. It is also who can upset who. We have seen Zverev having a miserable S. American (and now N. American) tour. He has been "upset" again and again. But, has he? It does not feel that way.
So, for a player like Fonseca, who did not win the Aussie, his win over Medvedev was a very good one, and should count as a good tournament for him.
A bit of my point is: nobody goes out there with three games in his pocket already before the first ball has been struck, like R/R/N used to.

by ashkor87 Interesting contrast between Raducanu and Rybakina..apart from their games...power vs defence etc..one can't keep a coach, and the other can't get rid of one!
by ashkor87 Andreeva will need a good draw..if she gets through a couple of rounds she will be fine..it isn't lack of energy that will beat her, just the fact that she will need time to adjust to the conditions. Same goes for Sabalenka...Bencic and Rybakina didn't last long enough at IW so they will be fresh ..I still think one of them will win ..
The men- really, it is between Med znd Alcaraz..I would be surprised if anyone else wins .

You may be, two Sundays from now.
How hard can it be for a top professional to adjust from a hard court in California to a hard court in Miami?

Mirra is in the third quarter, so she is in Iga's half. But ERIKA is in the 4th quarter, so she is in Iga's quarter.

This was obvious today. She also panicked in the third set and Raducanu, who can't be said to be offensive minded, pounced, waiting for the errors to come. It was an important win for Raducanu. IMG has invested heavily in her and if she crashed out in the first or second set as she usually does here I'm sure more endorsements would be in jeopardy.

With "Cheater?" (Allegedly) Sinner out, there are no longer upsets. Welcome to the Non Fed Rafa Novax Serena Era, where, hey, ANYONE!!!! could win any given match. Until Sinner makes it back. These players are surely not the stuff of Sinner's nightmares. Otherwise, among the rest, anyone can beat anyone....obviously, especially concerning the ATP. I mean, you still gotta think that the WTA UGGGHHHH Sabalenka, ZZZZZ Iga & Her Therapist, and The Brat will, sooner than later, start to monopolize again, at least at the Slams. Until The Brat fully takes over.
Singles tennis just bores and irritates me at the moment. Hard to really root for anyone, when these silly upsets keep happening,
Sure, upsets happen to everyone. BUT, Carlos....i mean, it should be really simple. Quit with the freaking exhibitions already, try to be a professional, and consider, just for now, taking a page from Raducanu's Playbook, and Dump The Coach. SAME goes for the rest of these mugs. LOL, the only one I give an Out to with this mess is Novax. He at least has the excuse of being Geriatric.
....On a more positive note....those of us in Chicago can look forward to seeing Carlos at the annual Chicago Open in two to three years.

How hard can it be for a top professional to adjust from a hard court in California to a hard court in Miami?
It is all muscle memory after all..does take some time to unlearn and learn. Miami seems much faster, the humidity makes it hard to breathe..so yes, the deeper you went in IW, the harder it will be in Miami.
Both finalists at IW (WTA) handed out bagels to their opponents in their first match.
It is not that hard to go from IW to Miami. That is the reason they are pros.

Yes. Not anybody can win a tournament. But there are no matches that are 80% in favor of somebody.
And once Sinner gets off hard courts, I would say even he will be a favorite at the 60% mark. Ok, make it 70%.

Not so sure about parity per se. I think higher ranked players are under duress of the weight of expectations. You have to be quite extraordinary to perform well every week given this. Just being better on average does not guarantee a win in each match - the margins are small. That's why I'm waiting for Sinner to return. Also I don't agree that there was less diversity during 2001-2002: I.e top 4 in 2001 were Hewitt, Kuerten, Agassi, Kafelnikov - each with very distinct own style.
by ponchi101 I'll grant you Kuerten; indeed, h3e was different. But Kafelnikov and Hewitt patterned their game after Agassi. Two handed BH, baseline game, but unable to hit winners as easily as Andre could.
And I think that you claim that "have to be quite extraordinary" sums it all well. Carlitos is; he is just going though a lull. Sinner seems to be. The rest are just simply very, very good players.

We can't measure everything just by slams. Here are the last 10 MS1000 winners:
2024
Indian Wells: Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev.
Miami: Jannik Sinner defeated Grigor Dimitrov.
Monte Carlo: Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Casper Ruud.
Madrid: Andrey Rublev defeated Félix Auger-Aliassime.
Rome: Alexander Zverev defeated Nicolás Jarry.
Montreal: Alexei Popyrin defeated Andrey Rublev.
Cincinnati: Jannik Sinner defeated Frances Tiafoe.
Shanghai: Jannik Sinner defeated Novak Djokovic.
Paris: Alexander Zverev defeated Ugo Humbert.
2025
Indian Wells: Jack Draper defeats Holger Rune.
Take away Sinner, who we agree right now is in a class by himself, and only two other players have even reached two finals: Zverev and Rublev.
That is very even.

Agree. Slams are the measure.
But the trend seems to be for a more equal tour. It is the same reasoning why I always say that in the WTA, OTHER has a very good chance in the polls we open for slams. Maybe the ATP is still not there but I say there is a good chance of a new champion this year. GOOD chance, not overwhelming.
And also remember. Sinner did win his first slam last year. We are talking now about him as if he has been a slam champion for a long time.

Did Hewitt ever claim that he tried to emulate Agassi? To me they were quite different - Agassi never had a footspeed of Hewitt - not even close. Also Hewitt was significantly better net player. On the downside - the firepower was not comparable.
In general Hewitt was much more defensive-sound player. He was not defensive-minded, his offense was trying to take the ball as early as possible - this is where the similarity with Agassi may be drawn. But Agassi had almost unmatched hand-eye coordination and could pull-off his style. Hewitt, while very talented, still was not extraordinary in this department.
Their styles were different due to different strengths and weaknesses.
I think - stylistically the closest to Agassi was Nikolay Davydenko, but he came a bit later.

It has the look of tournament management favoritism of some sort, or is it an expectation of adverse weather? (This messes up my attempts to create the list of matches for the practice survivor pool, but not terribly so. It just creates a small amount of unnecessary confusion.)

by ti-amie De Minaur forces a second set TB against Berrettini after saving multiple match points
by ti-amie Berrettini is dripping wet. Literally dripping wet.
However he takes the match 6-3, 7-6(7)
by skatingfan Eala takes out Swiatek in straight sets.
by Suliso My theory is that los to Keys in AO SF's has affected Iga a lot.
by ti-amie It looked at one point in the second set that Iga had adjusted and was going to force a third set but Ms Eala wasn't having it.

Seems like Eala is finally happening. Her results this week might seem random to some of you, but she had an outstanding junior career (2022 USO winner) and now finally approaching the top 100. Still only 19.
Also so much for Keys being a different player this year. As inconsistent as ever..
You owe Keys an apology. Eala did the exact same thing to Swiatek and has not lost a set here.

Two broken players out of the Aussie? Iga and Zverev?
More data and fodder for those that say that anybody can beat anybody.

by ashkor87 Eala treated Swiatek's second serve the way it deserves to be treated.. broke her 8 times! she was taking that serve from 2 feet inside the baseline..
she is a former USO junior champ so this is no fluke...
Pegula next.. a very different kind of player, no weaknesses to attack.. should be interesting.

It would be so great (for me) for Eala to win it all.
You know, new winners and all that jazz.
by ti-amie I'm with Ashkor on Eala. Tonight will be a big test for her. Pegula had to bite and claw her way back in that match with Raducanu mostly because she seemed to lose the plot in the second set. Either she'll win in straight sets vs a nervous Eala or possibly lose in three.
by ponchi101 Daniel Orsanic, an Argie commentator down here, just made the comment that Eala reminds him of a Leylah Fernandez, with power.

She does, especially the way she moves...she needs more power on her serve thiugh
by ti-amie Fritz had 6 MP's. We're going to set 3 after a powerful comeback by Berrettini who took the second set 7-6(7).

Not yet, evidently...
by Suliso Before we talk about Tiers Eala has to prove this week was not a fluke. Like Raducanu's USO likely was.
by ashkor87 both Raducanu and Eala were impressive in defeat.. Raducanu attacked constantly, was a bit unlucky sometmes - Eala showed how to deal with second serves..
on a faster surface, both might have done better - of course, they had a formidable barrier to cross, in Pegula.
by ashkor87 good to see Sabalenka doing well.. wasnt it here she had that horrible experience with her ex committing suicide?
Technically, this medium-paced hard court should suit her game, but she has never done all that well here, before.. nice to see

Exactly what I thought. We don't know if she is going to be a player that will win 46% of her matches, and she just strung three good victories because the stats allow for such a string to happen.
Having said that: there is a lot of potential, not only in the game, but in the marketing. I liked that she told Pegula "It was a privilege playing with you", and she took her defeat well. On the game side, I think that she was a bit intrepid coming to the net, but once there, she seemed comfy. She hit a couple of low FH volleys deep into the corner, which is not an easy shot.
It would be good if she becomes a regular winner in the tour. The potential for SE Asia is huge.

by dryrunguy Honest question... Do we like Mensik? I can't keep up with all things tennis the way I used to, so I thought I'd ask. He seems like a good kid to me. So I just wanted to see if he's, like, had photo-ops with Andrew Tate or done anything else that would make him, you know, evil incarnate...

by ashkor87 Resounding win for Sabalenka...seems to have banished the demons from her mind...I am hopeful she will win W this year ..she has always done well but never quite made it..on clay, i would still expect Swiatek to beat her..of course, when you are one of the 3 best in a given tournament, you always have a shot, and she does.

Explain to me what do you mean by demons in her mind. She has reached the finals of the big three tournaments of the first quarter of the year. She won two slams last year. She has not been "crushed" in any match, and her issues with her serve were taken care of a while back.
She has been playing solid tennis and is the clear #1. If there is anybody with demons, and they are tiny, is Iga, who has not won anything since RG. But now goes back to her beloved clay.
Yes, I say this year she should be the slight favorite at W.
by jazzyg That was a tremendously entertaining match between Mensik and Djokovic.
Mensik deserved to win and played both tiebreaks better than Djokovic, who served incredibly well in the first set and still lost it.

Haven't the courts been slowed down a lot since the mid-1990s to prevent the dominance of huge serves? So players just started serving bigger and now it's a problem again, is that what's happening? I heard Miami was playing fast. Maybe it's an anomoly.
I think in general we want some hard courts (maybe most) to play fast. We want fast surfaces. We want serves to be hard to break. Not impossible, but some people enjoyed Pete-Andre contrasts. The better returners will be rewarded.
by JTContinental Mensik was actually going to pull out of this tournament before it started with a knee injury, but when he went to do so, the official had gone to lunch, so he decided to tough it out.
by ponchi101 I don't see any big serves dominating. They all have big serves, meaning that they can all crack 125 MPH. But look at the list of top ten, and you can't find a huge server that has real separation from the rest of the pack.
And Mensik yesterday hit a few serves at 132~135, but most his serves were around 125. He was hitting aces by placement, not sheer speed. I really liked that.
by ashkor87 If even Djokovic can't get his racket on a serve, is that good for the game?
by ashkor87 Maybe players are just too tall tese days..reduce the size of the serve box! Or raise the net! Take away the second serve .anything! Would anyone pay $5 to watch Perricard vs Mensik? The game will die at this rate
by jazzyg You are far too hard on Mensik. His serve was great against Djokovic, but he won that match because he was more consistent from the baseline in the tiebreaks, outlasting Djokovic while showing really good wheels to run down his shots with enough time to get them back deep.
by ponchi101 Also, look at the rate of returns for the match. Sure, Mensik hit 13 aces, but other than that, both of them got over 50% of all serves, 1st and 2nd, back in.
And no, you cannot make the box smaller, of raise the net. Us amateurs also play the sport. And we heard this in the 80's when Becker came along, and even Philippe Chatrier said it was too much and we needed to get rid of the second serve.
And the S&V game disappeared. The big serve is needed because otherwise, every other game will be break of serve. We don't want that.
by ashkor87 The second serve really is an anamoly..in which sport do you get two chances just to start play? I certainly think it is the easiest solution, without fiddling with infrastructure..
by mick1303 Tennis is JUST FINE the way it is. Tinkering with rules may cause very negative consequences. It will be no longer the sport we enjoy, but something else.

In baseball you get three strikes.
In football you get four downs.
In basketball you get two free throws, or three.
In skiing you get two runs down the slope.
In tennis, we get two serves. Heck, I need three, myself!
by ashkor87 None of those are to start..do you get an extra ball as a pitcher? The 4 downs in football are like the 4 points to win a game.i know nothing about skiing.
by ponchi101 I assume you know about baseball, since you lived in the USA. You get as many more balls as needed if you reached 3-2, and the next are fouls.
Anyway. One of the beautiful things in tennis is precisely that you get two serves. Getting that ball in that box is not easy. And seeing the very low success rates that players get on second serves, imagine the number of breaks.
I think it would be a bad idea.
by FredX The second serve is one of the six original rules of lawn tennis going back to Major Wingfield's rulebook in 1874!
