Ponchi is making fun of the prediction that Paul will do well, and eluding to one of our favourite subjects of Talk About Tennis - we are jinks - we have ruined careers just by being in the stands.

As skating says above, and I meant ANY 3R. Sure, he is alive, and next thing you know, he loses an inexplicable match.
I don't know about his FH being too spin-ny (@Mick).

And I saw him win Queens with my own eyes...your jinxes may have lost their potency?!

But I agree his forehand doesn't quite penetrate...

De Minaur is the other quick-footed streak of lightning who could have done well, but I think he is still injured.. Tommy Paul is the only other one I can think of whose foot speed exceeds his overall capability..so should do better than his own average at Shanghai.

slow-footed hulks are many - Fritz, for instance.. who should NOT do well here.

You do this with frequency.
Of course he won Queens. He is a fine player. But I think he should win 2-3 tournaments a year, and should be a permanent fixture in the second week of slams, even RG.
And he isn't. And I wonder why because I like his game and strokes and he moves well. So, I just don't know what is missing (although you guys are pointing it out).

His volley is also not decisive enough..though he likes to volley ..tends to just pop it up in the middle of the court..

That didn't stop Novak.
We always like to look for one stroke or one thing that the player does not do well. And you can see many champions that had technical issues on one stroke or the other. Edberg's FH was a really weak shot. 6 Slams. Evert's volleys were adequate, nothing more. You know the count. Becker's FH volley was hit with the wrong grip, Courier's BH was a very odd stroke.
Then you had perfect strikers like Laconte and currently Muchova, and they have no slams.
Plenty of players have been winners with some part of the game missing. Wilander. And his basic-skills net game.

Very true. But all great players have a couple of great strengths..Paul doesn't...except for movement, I suppose...

This bring an extreme case- a fast court, we can make some predictions- Paul, Tiafoe, will do well, Musetti, Fritz, Berrettini and other leaden-footed heavy hitters will not ..Sinner and Alcaraz are very quick, they will do well but that won't surprise anyone ..

Musetti is an opposite of "leaden-footed". His problem with fast surfaces is of different nature: tendency to long backswings. I thought that he rectified it, given his good showing at Wimbledon. But maybe this time the reason for his loss is different, I did not see the match...
