by ti-amie Pegula had a break, went on a bit of a walkabout, gave the break back, and Sabalenka has been on a bit of a tear up 5-3 first set.

by ti-amie Also one of Sablenka's professional staff has a replica of her tattoo on his head.

by ti-amie Sabalenka takes a hard fought first set 7-5.

You can see head tattoo guy here.

by ponchi101 Aryna has added an actually pretty good drop shot. It kind of sneaks in there.

by ti-amie As we've talked about here Pegula is missing something that will take her over the hump. She had to come back in both sets mostly because of her own doing but Sabalenka, when all is said and done, had the ability to overcome her threat. 7-5, 7-5 is a much closer match than it could've been.

by ponchi101 We always like to say that the player that loses is missing something.
But somebody has to win. That is how the sport plays.
Pegula beat the current #1 handily. She came from behind in her semi, losing 8 of the 9 first games and then winning 12 of the last 16.
I don't think she is missing something. A bit of luck maybe, as if somebody would have taken Aryna out, she could have won.
The way Aryna is smacking the ball, no one is going to beat her on a hard court. I don't think Jessie is missing something. It is just that Aryna is right now the best hard court player around.

I don't think anyone thought Pegula would win.

There is one vote for Pegula

by ponchi101 I voted for Jessie because I felt that she had a chance to muddy the match and throw Aryna out of sync. She did it to Iga and Muchova, so I felt if she could stretch it to 3, she had a chance.
But, totally wrong, in hindsight.

by ti-amie I would've voted but missed it. I would've voted Pegula even knowing...

by skatingfan I also missed the poll - I would have voted Sabalenka in 2 sets - the match was tighter than I thought it would be.
