by ashkor87 Certainly, Sabalenka should be favorite - the fast conditions and heat/humidity will help Coco - she is in very good form too.. Rybakina always has a chance, she is such a great player, and has the confidence of recent wins over Sabalenka (at the YEC, for instance).. the court wll be too fast for Swiatek, as usual, someone who can push her back, can beat her, and there are many like that - Collins, Kostyuk, Noskova, Navarro - in addition to the 3 above.. so I dont give her much chance at the AO, to actually win, too many people can beat her.. as for the rest, Paolini will do well, her quickness and defence will be very effective but I dont think she has the 'class' to be champion. Pegula, maybe but I just dont see her as a potential major champion - I know others here do. My wildcard here would be Andreeva - she is so young and improving so fast, it is impossible to tell how good she can be...

Players like Navarro made their first SF's. Yastremska, coming from the Q's, made the SF last year at the Aussie. Andreeva made it at RG, Vekic at W.
And no, the dominance we see in today's game is nowhere near the great players of recent past. The sole player that I would say is dominant is Iga, as long as she is on clay. Other than that, nobody goes out there with the score already 3-0, with two breaks up, before they even step on the court. Like Martina, Chris, Steffi or Serena did.
Look at your own analysis. You claim Kerjikova is a Tier 1 player. And has the grand total of 2 slams. Do the graph and you need a whole new scale for real greatness.

Yes, first few weeks of the year, some players have not gotten in shape yet. It can be a tricky one.

agree, except for Rybakina - there is nothing actually wrong with Rybakina, and she showed she can play, beat Sabalenka in Riyadh. So I still think she is one of the 3 best in the field.. btw, saw an interview recently with Fisette where he said Iga's closest competition is Rybakina (presumably becuse she has a winning h2h against Iga).. I had expected Coco to win last year itself, but she didnt - this time, she is in good form, co-favorite for me with Sabalenka..

Look at the actual facts..last year, who won the majors? Only Krejcikova is a surprise, and she was already a major champion...as we have seen over the past 2 decades, W has slowed down, so an RG champion can win it ..see Alcaraz, or even Vondrousova, or Paolini..it is no longer surprising to see claycourt experts doing well at W...
Let us not reopen the argument about 'anyone can win' - you think that is true, I think it is not.

Yes, last year on the women's side there were no new winners. But Jannick won his first one here. Those data tell you something.
by ashkor87 Sinner was always going to win one..I had predicted it before the AO started. There is always a first time...point is, there were no really unexpected or unworthy champions ..2 to Sinner, 2 to Alcaraz..totally expected.

Sabalenka 2024 does on the vast majority of players. I don't think she is erratic anymore. Had some extenuating circumstances last year, then steadied and settled and showed her dominance. A few people got her at the end of the year, and those were great wins. No losses isn't realistic. I think she has distanced herself from everyone except Iga, and she had the edge on her off clay. I hope she keeps it up in 2025. Her A game is better than anyone else's right now, except Rybakina's A+ game.

Yes, sad ..smooth, lovely player..was not going to win the title but twice QF..she can't handle the heat anyway so would have struggled physically anyway ..I wonder also about people like Tauson and Ruud ..I find Americans, especially from Florida, surprisingly good at it ..Tiafoe, Coco, Osaka, Keys, Collins..they will all master the conditions well.
