Actually, you are being more generous on "the field" than I am. I say Rune is not the field; he has won a MS100 before and has been a finalist here, for example. I say Ruud is not the field; he loves clay and has a been a RU at RG twice.

Gasquet got the wild card because this is (likely) his final year and the most famous win of his career was in Monte Carlo, against Federer when Federer was supposed to be unbeatable.

Never ceases to amaze ..MC is the ONLY 1000 level tournament Djokovic has not won at least 3 times...and it is his Home tournament, in a way!

He's won it twice. It is not as if he has been a failure there.
There has got to be one tournament where he will have his fewest wins.

It is actually not an easy endeavor to compare matches/titles won in Masters between tournaments. The main reason is that unlike slams they are traveling around. Only Rome, Canadian, Monte Carlo and Paris Indoors have stable location through the whole Open Era. Of course, you can compare matches won in each masters individually, but it would be not very informative to compare these results between different tournaments. Some tournaments are defunct (or downgraded), while others have much shorter history. But even with that in mind, Monte Carlo is rather significant in Djokovic career. For instance, he won Canadian Open 4 times, but only won 37 matches there (less than in MC). Just played there much less.
