They should put a Cheesecake Factory right in the middle, and then all the players will want to move in.

For context: Unlike Montreal, they did a player survey awhile back as to their favorite tournament venues, and Cincinnati was one of the top stops, mainly due to its proximity to a Cheesecake Factory.

by ashkor87 Based on last year, and reputation, this court is fast, even faster than the USO .expect Pegula, Paolini, Gauff, Bencic to do well.. Those will not like the conditions - Anisimova, Krejcikova, Ostapenko, Kostyuk..they all need a little more time to hit their shots, and arent particularly quick on their feet.

by ashkor87 Among the men, DeMinaur and Paul can do well, maybe Fritz will not..

of course, I didnt mean they will win the title.Sinner will win, for sure.

by ashkor87 QF lineup likely: (by my reckoning)

Sabalenka vs Rybakina
Swiatek vs Alexandrova
Kessler vs Bencic/Tauson
Osaka vs Gauff

all look like good matches.. looking forward to them.
Third quarter looks the hardest to call, with Pegula, Tauson and Bencic all present..i certainly think it will be Bencic..simply because her style suits a fast surface..
Sabalenka may not even get there, has to beat Leylah, may not do it.

by ashkor87 Alcaraz is a puzzle...last year he did nothing here, nothing at the USO...complained about the court speed..

by ashkor87 Pegula seems a bit off lately too..since Berlin..wonder what is wrong. I can no longer rely on her as the benchmark...

by jazzyg Osaka predictably withdrew.

by dryrunguy Did anyone else just see the... meltdown?... by Collins after losing the first two points of the second set tiebreaker against Townsend? She had lost the first set and was down 0-2 in the breaker when she just started wailing either at herself or someone in the crowd or something... Really bizarre.

It threw Taylor off for a second.. She immediately threw in a double before getting her head together and winning the breaker 7-2--and thus the match.

Really odd. Really, really odd. I missed everything before that, so perhaps I missed some earlier match history.

After it was over, Collins left the court without her gear.

Medvedev did the same thing in Toronto.

by ti-amie It looks as if Mertens has taken control of her match vs Ngounoue up 3-1 in the third after winning the second set TB 7-6(3).

by ti-amie Mertens defeats Clervie Ngounoue 3-6, 7-6(3) 7-5. I thought Mertens would have an easier time but a win is a win.

by news727 Vondrousova blew 5 break points in the second set's third-to-last game. Then one more in the last game to top it off.

Final score: Sabalenka wins 7-5, 6-1 to advance to round 2.

by ponchi101 It is not that Walton beat him. It was the quality of the game that Medvedev brought.
I said it in the Toronto topic: Medvedev is done. He is suffering in every match, the moment it gets a bit tough. I really would not be surprised if he retires in a couple of years.

Wonder what is wrong with him...anyone know?

by JTContinental I don't think his athleticism is up there with the top players. It used to be normal to decline around 30 in the pro tennis world, which I imagine he has to be pushing.

Could be. I also say that when you have such weird strokes, starting to miss the precision of hitting the ball may come earlier in life.
But the way I saw the match, it was totally mental. Sure, you had the expected whining and exploding towards the coaches' box, but he also seemed unable to accept that it was a tough match, and that Walton was not going away. So HE went away.

by ponchi101 Sabalenka has got to be the most brainless player in a long time. She makes Mary Pierce look downright cerebral.

by martini4me Raducanu just evened the third set at 4-all by holding serve in a game with 13 deuces.

Sabalenka held, now 5-4. TV shows the third set has already been 67 minutes long. Was there an injury timeout (or maybe it was a heat break before the set). That seems very long, even if that one game was 15 minutes.

by ashkor87 Saw a couple more matches on YouTube...highlights..the courts do seem fast..Alcaraz mentioned it too

by ti-amie The Raducanu vs Sabalenka match was horrific. Sabalenka played brain dead tennis gifting Raducanu points while making horrible decisions when it came to returns or serving. Yes she won 7-6(3), 4-6, 7-6(5) but she obviously came out with no coherent strategy. If Raducanu was a different player she would've won the match.

Sabalenka held, now 5-4. TV shows the third set has already been 67 minutes long. Was there an injury timeout (or maybe it was a heat break before the set). That seems very long, even if that one game was 15 minutes.
Not a single break in continuity. No MTO's. It ended up being 90 minutes.
See Ti's comments. If Aryna could THINK for one point, it would have been a different match.

It is ridiculous. Do not get players on court before 4PM. They just can't handle the heat.

No MTOs, but Sabalenka took a 15-20 minute fake bathroom break after the second set.

by news727 Just cross-checking the latest power outage data in Ohio.

The most outages are currently reported by Duke Energy, which also covers Warren County, where the tournament is located (Mason).

There are 4 active outages currently reported in the county. (Does not get any more granular than that, though).

Estimated time of restoration is tonight 11pm ET. So we are likely looking at a "wrap for the day" scenario.

We have 11 MLB games on tap tonight if you're still after live sport.

UPDATE: About 5:50pm ET, play has been interrupted on all courts.

We have also found the culprit.

So that really is the day ending. All matches ongoing and still to come will unlikely be televised. I'm frankly even worried about tomorrow as well.

UPDATE 2: We are back in time for the night session. Center Court resumes 6:35pm ET, ending a 2:20 power outage. Other courts are set to gradually resume. Play will begin not before 6:45pm.

But now there is no way the night's doubleheaders on two main courts will finish tonight.

by ti-amie This all happened because Fritz is playing a day match...

by news727 A fire alarm is underway in Sinner/Diallo, as a follow-up after an LED screen failure half an hour prior in the same match.

I really love this tournament. /s

by dryrunguy Diallo just won a long rally!!! Turn me upside-down and paint my toenails blue!!!

by ashkor87 Very interested to see the Rybakina-Mertens match..on a fast court, Mertens is very good, can expose Rybakina's poor movement (note the early defeat of powerful but slow people like Anisimova and Pavs .) but Rybakina's serve is a thunderbolt, if she lands it often enough, there is not much anyone can do ..

by ashkor87 Coco really should win this tournament- conditions are made for her- heat included...

by ashkor87 just saw the highlights of Saba-Raducanu match on Youtube. some very strange shot selection from Raducanu - when she should have punched the ball into the open court, she goes for a drop shot- which Sabalenka reaches and puts away. Roig should focus on this one thing, apart from her serve, which is greatly improved already.. Her returning and movement were always top notch.

True if enforced. But we are way past the deadline and the matches are still going.

That can only mean the curfew has been overridden and 1am finishes will be coming.

UPDATE: Rybakina defeats Mertens at 12:16AM local time. And that is it for the day.

by jazzyg Thr Sabalenka-Raducanu match was high quality to my eyes, as well as to Davenport's and Rubin's as the commentators.

The fact that Sabalenka has won 16 consecutive tiebreaks is one of the most incredible stats I have ever seen. Has to be an all-time record for both tours. Yet no mention of it here.

by ashkor87 Actually incredible because tiebreak success is a sign of mental strength..which is not what one credits Sabalenka with...

by ashkor87 https://www.tennis.com/news/articles/ar ... cincinnati
It is a record in the Open era...

by ashkor87 loved the way Kalinskaya took Anisimova's serve from inside the baseline, to hurry her - a good ploy given that anisimova is not greased lightning on the court..

by ponchi101 About Sabalenka-Radaucanu.
Sabalenka went out and, once again, played another three set match in which she hit over 70 UE's (she hit 72). This time, she was lucky and won. but it seems to me she has not learned one bit from the RG final, which she lost.
I have said that coaches get praised too much, or blamed too much. But I wonder if anybody in her box can explain to her that if the ball does not land on the other player's side, you don't win the point. But also, it makes no difference if you hit a screaming winner at 100MPH that clips the line, or a 75MPH cross court that lands two feet inside of it.
Last: stop with the drop shots; you simply do not have the shot.

I do not agree about the drop-shot. Yes, at times it is a pure cringe. But given that with her weight of shots she frequently pushes an opponent deep behind the baseline, even mediocre ds may win a point. Also - it breaks opponent's rhythm and makes them vary of the possibility. Also sometimes she wins a point with a subsequent volley even if an opponent gets to the drop-shot. In any case she shall try again and again. But keeping a balance, without overdoing it.

by ponchi101 In the Raducanu match, she did not win a single one. Either by not even getting them over the net, or by Emma reaching them with ease.
It is not in her arsenal. She needs to practice it a lot before it will become what you are saying it should be.

Yes, folks like Raducanu, Paolini, Gauff, Swiatek, are too quick, reach a lot of balls..drop shots don't work well against them unless they are very well disguised and really short..

by ti-amie Carlos through in straight sets 6 -1, 6-4 over Nardi.

by ashkor87 Anyone know what is wrong with Pegula? Losing to all kinds of people nowadays..hasnt won a title since Berlin .? Suddenly talking about retiring at 35...

by ashkor87 Not that I am a fan of Pegula's but she was my benchmark...always to be relied on to beat lesser players..now I can't rely on her any more!

by ti-amie What's that cliche statement about the tour catching up with her? She hasn't played badly from what I've seen but like many of you have said she doesn't have a "kill" shot that she can use during crunch time. I agree that she was (is?) a benchmark a player had to defeat to make a deep run but now she's just one of the pack.

by ti-amie Rublev is through 6-2, 6-3.

:)

by jazzyg Great win for Kalinskaya over Alexandrova, who led their head-to-head 6-0 and was three points from winning in straights at 5-6 in the second-set tiebreak. Kalinskaya was outstanding for the final two sets.

I really believe she has slam-winning potential if she can stay healthy, which I understand is a stretch based on her history. Her game is so smooth, and her backhand is elite. She also apparently is in the top seven on tour this year in second-serve points won and second-serve return points won. She won seven straight matches against top-10 players last year, including beating Swiatek, who will be her quarterfinal opponent on Friday.

Mental toughness and fitness have held her back--she crumbled in an Aussie Open quarterfinal against Zheng last year after winning the first set and again in a pair of matches against Paolini and again in the Washington final against Fernandez a few weeks ago--but she showed that strength tonight.

She's 31 and has a game that reiies heavily on court coverage. I think she's just a bit slower these days or maybe she's nursing a small injury.

by ashkor87 The interesting matches today are Krejcikova-Paolini and Sinner-FAA..
FAA certainly has a chance, his serve will be hard to deal with on this fast court..40% FAA i would say..I would bet on Paoljni to beat K ..65%,..I don't expect K to enjoy the conditions here. But the real revelation has been Kudermetova..I never thought she could do well here.

FAA at 40% is way too high. He will hit his inside out FH again and again into Jannik's BH, and that will lead to Jannik getting used to it by the 2nd game. FAA's big problem is his lack of variety, and that is nothing more than a plate of cannoli's for Jannick. He will eat those with relish.

by skatingfan Atmane with his 2nd consecutive top 10 win, this time over Holger Rune. Before this event he had one tour level win this year. He has now doubled his career tour level wins this week with 5 (plus two more wins in qualifying) to reach the semifinals.

Agree. He's got the fire, and he seems to be improving. Zverev and Fritz seem to have reached their peaks (or, in Fritz's case, only very slight, minuscule improvements). Draper doesn't seem to have the mental and physical consistency to maintain his ranking.

by ponchi101 Agree.
And agree. Shelton will move further up. He is one or two tweaks to his game from becoming a top player and take a set from J/C in their matches.
---0---
Atmane continues the recent tradition of players coming out of nowhere and having really good tournaments. Last year, Popyrin took Montreal. This year, Eala had that really good run at Miami, Sierra had that run at Wimby, Mboko won Montreal, and now Atmane has been playing majestic tennis.
Unless you are a top 3 player (top 2 in the ATP), nobody is scared of you. Nobody.
And, BTW. Atmane has weapons. Only a matter of time to see if he can tame them on a routine basis.

I know. That is the reason I am not declaring him the second coming of Mats Wilander. Heck, I will not even declare him the second coming of Laconte until he can reach 3R with consistency.

yes, could be so

by ashkor87 watched the longer version of the highights just to see what caused the doublt faults.. 3 of them when she was down 2-3 in the second set, thereby going down a break in the second set. - certainly a crucial phase, to my eye, it looked like Coco just lost her nerve. .. just scoreboard pressure, it looked like. There was nothing to suggest anything else. Not good. Double faults are primarily a sign of mental fragility.

by mick1303 Defending the titles. Alcaraz - IW 23,24; Barcelona - 22,23; Madrid - 22,23; Wimbledon - 23,24; French - 24,25
Sinner - Sofia 20,21; Australian - 24,25. end of list.
Alcaraz leads 5:2 in defending the titles. Sinner has a chance to make it 5:3.

by dryrunguy One thing that bothered Coco last night (and shouldn't have, but it points to a larger problem I have noticed in Cincinnati)... With her attempting to serve at 3-all, deuce (first set, I think), she noticed a group of 3 or 4 people trying to find those perfect, most ideal seats in the lowest level of the stands. Those people took their sweet time as she prepared to serve, twice, until the chair finally said something and the spectators settled on seats that were only marginally appropriate for their personal greatness and overdeveloped sense of entitlement... At which point Coco got broken by serving two doubles. In my book, that's still Coco's fault.

That said, there doesn't appear to be anyone or anything inhibiting free movement among the spectators in the lowest level of the stands. This is Cincinnati, a Masters 1000 event. Someone should be monitoring the entrances and exits to prevent this from happening, especially at crucial stages of a match. Perhaps this happens all the time at this level of events, and I just didn't notice it. But I've noticed it more than a few times in Cincinnati. That's not right.

Not that fast. Rublev played a very good match on a surface that he really likes. He served particularly well.
I mean. It is not as if Carlos was playing your or I. He is not going to beat players like this 0 & 2.
Let's see what he has for the semis. Zverev will be a real test.

by Suliso My best guess is Sinner and Rybakina as winners this week.

by ponchi101 I took Swiatek in Predictions. Thinking she would down Sabalenka and her 70 UE's per match in the semis.
But if Rybakina wins, I will not be happier.

by mick1303 Rybakina's matchups vs Saba and vs Swiatek are kind of moving in the opposite directions. Vs Saba she started 0:4 and now it is 4:6, meaning that out of last 6 she won 4. Vs Swiatek she started 3:1 and after that Swiatek won 4 out of the last 5. Including last 3.

by Suliso True, but one would think this surface would favor Rybakina. Not for sure of course.

The rules have changed in the past few years, and it varies from event to event. For Toronto this year they weren't checking tickets once you were inside the stadium so people could sit wherever, and as long as you moved when the seat holders came along there was no issue. They were also allowing fans in between games on the side of the courts, and only holding the ends for the changeovers.

by jazzyg Gauff's issues are a real problem in my opinion, and I'll keep pointing it out until I am proven wrong, if it happens.

They keep making excuses for her and pointing our her toughness, but she wilted at the end of that match yesterday under the weight of all those double faults. It's not natural, what is going on with her. It wasn't with Sabalenka a few years ago, either, but she was the rare player who overcame her mental block. Gauff absolutely has the athletic ability to recover, too, but right now she is a contender only on clay.

by ti-amie Not to worry. Carlos won 6-4, 6-3.

Something Swiantek uses better than most, changing tactics. Now she's running away with it.

My love for her stops me from saying that that is basically her motto. It should be her coat of arms.
"Genuinely confused about what to do".
Yes. It fits.

by ashkor87 Swiatek had a throw-away comment after the match - the court is a bit slower than last year.

by ashkor87 I dont think Paolini has any chance at all, Sinner-Alcaraz would be 60-40 by my reckoning.

by mick1303 Now I have a feeling that Sinner will crumble under the weight of the massive jinx from all involved parties...

by ponchi101 Because of the time of day, I give Alcaraz the edge. I think he will be able to handle the heat better.
As Ashkor says, Iga in a walk in the park. And will be the heavy favorite for the USO.

Do not agree with Swiatek being the heavy favorite. For some reason, Sabalenka will revert to Slam playing Sabalenka. With this being a Slam that is not on grass and won this two years ago, Gauff will find a way to reduce DFs to a manageable number (under 10).

by ponchi101 I hope you will be right. But I expect to see "8 DF's per set" Coco and "20 UE's per set" Aryna coming into NYC. Did not see either one of those two doing anything different at Cincy.
Iga, on the other hand, has recovered her aggressiveness and penchant for bullying people once they go down a break.

I think Iga, too. Kudermatova kind of collapsed in the third vs. Paolini. She grinded that one out. It won't be enough vs. Iga. Iga will be on a plane to NY by 11 pm.

I wish he had made the volley. It would have been the Shot of the Year.

by ponchi101 Just as we were talking about changes to the sport, this final happens.
And nothing to do about it.

by jazzyg The new two-week Master's series events have become a horrible embarrassment to the sport.

Playing in the heat of the day in Cincinnati on a Monday is criminal, and that would have been true even if Sinner had no issues, which probably are not related to the weather. They are killing the sport in the U.S. with this new format, getting rid of tournaments left and right to accommodate the bloated events and having players indicate their disdain for them all over the place.

Alcaraz essentially had walk-overs against the No. 1 and 3 players in the world in the semis and final. Not a good look for the sport.

by led14pa2 Swiatek’s season is really reminding me of Djokovic’s 2018 year. Both entered Wimbledon having gone over a year without a title but had lost in the final of a grass court warmup. They then won Wimbledon and backed it up with a title in Cincy.

This really started Novak’s 2nd era of dominance. It’ll be interesting to see if Iga follows a similar path.

Yep, must be nice

by ashkor87 Iga is working on making her serve a weapon, she says..Fisette has convinced her she can serve at 180 kmph consistently...against Paolini, she did just that ..if she carries on like this, she will win the USO (again)

by jazzyg She played fantastic, better than I imagined, and she needed to because Paolini played much better than she had in reaching the final.

Probably because I am just stubborn, but I still don't think Swiatek will win the US Open. To be right, though, I will need one of the top players to raise her level significantly because no one is playing well enough at the moment to make Swiatek get tense.
