Surprises she wasn’t higher or as high in 2017, the year she made the US Open final.

She was ranked fifth last month.

EDIT: just realizing the quoted material was from a while ago. My ranking is plummeting.

#2 beat #1 in both finals...so much for rankings.

Well, that seems to be is aimed directly at me :)
Indeed, this tournament is a strong data point of how rankings matter. In the positive way. You seem unable to understand the statistics. As Suliso said, the top players on the WTA reached the last stages; in the ATP, the same thing happened. With a few exceptions.
As is your MO, you are looking at ONE DATA point that justifies your statement. Look a little bit more and look at the big picture. Out of 15 matches starting from 4R, in the ATP only 3 matches had the lower ranked player beat the higher ranked. In the WTA, 4. Hard to say that rankings don't matter when they are such a good indicator, overall, of who will win the match.
Also, to say that "anyone can win" is not accurate fails to see the big picture. What do you say about Boisson? Beat 5 higher ranked players, and not higher ranked by one or two spots: all of them had a ranking two hundred points above, at least.
Bublik's defeat of Draper was also a good show that even in the ATP, with the exception of Alcaraz and Sinner, nobody walks out there with the win in his hand. He also beat Deminaur, and Rocha beat Mensik. Below Carlos and Jannik, nobody is safe. You walk out there with some good chances, but not with an inevitable victory.
In the ATP, the cast has been set. Sinner and Alcaraz have established themselves as clearly superior to anybody else; it seems we have gone from a BIG 3 to a BIG 2, with no indication anybody else will join the rank of top players (Draper, with a big maybe?). In the WTA it is a bit different, with two current champions that won coming from the field: Maddie and Krejcikova. You will disagree, I know.
Anyway, you love to do this. When the data fits your narrative, you bring it up. When your predictions are a bit off (Alexandrova will beat Gauff), you like to continue watching.
Let's see how it goes on grass, a bit more unpredictable than clay.
I say the Wimby final is almost set: 99% chance that Carlos makes it, 95% Sinner too. In the WTA: wow, can't even see who will be there.

Look, this site is for discussion..sometimes I will be right, sometimes I will be wrong ..but to say 'anything can happen' is to state a truism, what discussion is possible? Worse, it is a cop-out, better not to say anything...I take risks when I make predictions, that is the price I pay, I get to hear comments like yours.
