We had that in Vennieland (before the Chavez administration, must be said). It was called "The law of vagrants and thugs". If you were detained by the police (and in Venezuela, the police could stop you at any time, for no given reason), and you did not have at least Bs 5 in cash on you (a bit over $1), you could be considered a vagrant, and be thrown into jail. No more questions asked.
The potential in the USA to then "arrest" people because of this law is enormous. After all, how can you properly define "mentally fit"? Try to tell that to a cop.

Hey folks, I'm seeing this fake tweet go around. Karoline Leavitt didn't post this. She's never said this. It isn't real.

It undermines the efforts to get the Trump White House to finally release the Epstein files when disinformation like this is being spread.

For those who know NYC the address is 345 Park Ave at 51 street. The last I heard he unalived himself.

The NFL and Blackstone have offices in the building.

What's weird is that the best (only?) coverage is on the Citizen App. As of a few minutes ago not even NY1 was covering this.

Networks and the rags have picked it up now.

A police officer and at least two other people were shot Monday in Midtown Manhattan, and the building that houses the offices of the finance giant Blackstone and other firms was locked down, according to law enforcement officials.

The police did not immediately provide details of the shooting, including the condition of the wounded officer and the two other people who were shot. They said the gunman had been killed.

“The scene has been contained and the lone shooter has been neutralized,” Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said in a social media post.

The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. inside the building, at 345 Park Avenue, between 51st Street and 52nd Street. By 6:10 p.m., dozens of officers had flooded the area, according to a witness, Ben Ryder Howe, a freelance journalist.

Others with offices in the building include the National Football League, the accounting and financial advisory firm KPMG and the Rudin Management real estate firm. The N.F.L. staff was sheltering, awaiting police clearance to leave.

By about 7 p.m., people began to march out of the building in small groups with their hands raised, Mr. Howe said. A short time later, with police helicopters hovering, a larger group left the building.

Some ran as fast as they could. Others walked, seemingly unfazed by what was going on around them. Nearby buildings that had also been locked down began to empty as well, with many people leaving with their hands raised, presumably to show that they were not armed.

The shooter was identified by the police as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the matter. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the shooter was dead.

Authorities found a vehicle with Nevada plates registered to Tamura at the scene, sources said.

A photo obtained by The Post showed he had a concealed firearms permit from Las Vegas that expired in 2027.

The shooter was captured on surveillance strolling into the skyscraper with an assault rifle at around 6:30 p.m., just around evening rush hour.

A very fun thing to know about NYC is most of us don't have guns.

And if you want a gun legally it will take awhile. Like 7 to 8 months. They ask for letters of references and (expletive). Which means you have to find someone who is willing to say in the record you are someone who should have a gun

What about illegal guns?

They exist.

But those guns come from states - stares in Virginia - with lax gun laws. One benefit NYC has over Chicago is that those states are further away. Chicago unfortunately has Indiana on it's doorstep.

NYC is a large city with very strict gun laws embedded in a state with strict gun laws and the net result is we don't kill each other that often by guns (graded on an America curve)

It's telling that most of the big gun murders here that make national news come from people out of state (even Luigi)

I'm saying this because John Kennedy from Louisiana saying ending stop and frisk is responsible for a man apparently driving to NYV from Nevada with a rifle is a galaxy brain take and a misunderstanding of the city. It's like he thinks the 1979 film The Warriors is a modern documentary.

Also: I don't know if this has changed since the 2022 Supreme Court ruling but everything I detailed about a gun license in NYC is to my understanding about long guns.

My understanding is pistols are even harder to get because they can be concealed.

Oh one thing: NYPD is still pulling over Black and Brown people for no reason. When I say end stop and frisk I'm talking about formal policy

I felt some kind of way about guns and realized I felt that way without having ever shot one so I got a Groupon for a class at the only gun range in Manhattan. You can only shoot .22s and even that requires a background check that takes up to 72 hours.

A gunman armed with a rifle walked into a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper Monday evening and began firing, killing a New York City police officer, fatally shooting three other people and critically wounding a fifth victim before killing himself, officials said.

The slain officer was identified as Didarul Islam, 36. He was assigned to a Bronx precinct and was working at the building, at 345 Park Avenue, in a private security role, Jessica Tisch, the police commissioner said. He and wife have two children and were expecting their third, Ms. Tisch said.

Coming around the time that workers in the building, at 345 Park Avenue, between 51st and 52nd Streets, would normally be heading home, the shooting set off a chaotic scene that rippled out into the heart of Manhattan.

Inside the building, which is owned by the Rudin Management real estate firm, tenants that include the N.F.L. and the investment giant Blackstone Group locked down their offices for well over an hour as law enforcement officers searched for the gunman. Shortly before 8 p.m., Ms. Tisch said he was dead.

Tisch said Officer Islam was one of two officers working a paid detail at the building. Paid details allow private companies to hire city police officers to provide security.

“He was doing the job that we asked him to do,” Commissioner Tisch said of Officer Islam. “He died a hero.”

“Four innocent victims are dead,” Tisch said, including Officer Islam. She said the officer, 36, was assigned to the Bronx, and had two children; his wife is pregnant with their third child.

The victims include Officer Didarul Islam, another man, and two women, including one woman who was found dead on the 33rd floor, Tisch said.

Mr. Tamura was licensed to carry a gun in Nevada, Commissioner Tisch said.

Re Officer Islam:

The slain officer, who was in uniform and working at the building in a security role, was identified as Didarul Islam, 36. An immigrant from Bangladesh, he had been with the department for three and a half years, Mayor Eric Adams said at the news conference. Officer Islam and his wife had two children and were expecting their third, Ms. Tisch said.

Two of the men who this person would say "don't belong here" were killed.

Pro-Trump activist Charlie Kirk faced intense criticism over a social media post reacting to the fatal shooting in a midtown Manhattan office building that left four dead, including an NYPD officer. The alleged gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after turning his rifle on himself.

In a series of incendiary posts to social media platform X, formerly Twitter, Kirk attacked CNN for its coverage of the shooting and suggested it was a consequence of people who “don’t belong” in the city.

“Was just in NYC all weekend with our family,” Kirk wrote. “Never felt safe. So many people in the city who don’t belong. Praying for all involved.”
