Police officer killed in shooting near CDC, officials say

A police officer was killed Friday while responding to a shooting near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, officials said.

The officer was shot when he responded to calls of an incident unfolding, DeKalb County interim police chief Greg Padrick said at a news conference Friday evening. No civilians were shot, Mayor Andre Dickens (D) earlier told reporters.

“He was committed to serving the community,” Padrick said of the officer, whom officials declined to name but said had a wife and two children, with another baby expected soon.

“He gave his life with a commitment to serve others,” Padrick added.

Windows were shot on various floors of CDC buildings, officials said. Dickens said it was too soon to tell whether the agency had been targeted.

CDC Director Susan Monarez, who started in her job this week, said in a social media statement Friday evening that a gunman “opened fire on at least four CDC buildings.”

One of them, Building 24, is where the director’s office is, on the 12th floor. Monarez was not on campus at the time of the shooting — she had already left earlier in the afternoon to return to D.C., two agency officials said.

Monarez added that the organization was “heartbroken” and that the campus remained locked down on Friday evening as authorities continued to investigate.

Officials said the shooter was found on the second floor of a building that houses a CVS. He had been struck by gunfire, although authorities said it was unclear whether that gunfire was from officers or self-inflicted. He died at the scene, officials said.

Police said they received a call about the shooting around 4:50 p.m. Friday. At least 25 shots could be heard in the area, according to video shared with The Washington Post by a CDC employee.

Rapid-fire shots were heard near the CDC around 4:55 p.m., according to an employee who was on the 12th floor of Building 24 and spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Initially, they said, some people thought the shots were noise from construction.

The building was put on lockdown moments later, prompting the employee and their colleagues to lock the door and push chairs in front of the entrance. “We were all kind of in shock,” the employee said.

Looking out the window, the employee saw a person in a red shirt directing cars away from the scene of the shooting — “a hero” — the employee said.

The shooting took place near Emory Point, a mixed-use development with well-known restaurants and shops, as well as apartments. The development sits across a busy road from the CDC campus. The Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR) at Emory University, which is nearby, sent out an alert at 5:01 p.m. urging people to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT.”

In a statement, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) praised first responders while decrying that “deranged criminals” had targeted Georgians in two incidents within a week. A U.S. Army soldier allegedly shot five fellow service members Wednesday at Fort Stewart.

“Marty, the girls, and I are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians,” Kemp said, referring to his wife, Marty, and their children. “We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center.”

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr (R) said his office was “horrified” by the news and praying for the safety of Emory’s campus community.

“We stand ready to assist our law enforcement partners with whatever they may need,” he said in a statement.

The FBI’s Atlanta office said it was aware of the shooting and coordinating with local law enforcement.

Readers Comment:

"CNN also cited law enforcement officials stating that the suspect's family said that they believe the CDC was the intended target and that the shooter was sick and blamed his illness on the COVID-19 vaccine. Law enforcement authorities have not confirmed this at this time. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated that the suspect shot at the CDC building multiple times."

I would say the concept has changed, but there are two right now.
The USA is still an empire, but it is based on financial power. For example, the US Dollar should not be a reserve currency, seeing as the debt (around $36 trillion) is more than its GDP (about $30 T). But we accept that because if we don't, the entire world's economy goes belly up.
And China is also an empire. (GDP $19T, Debt $15T). The economies of these two countries run most of the world, and therefore, they are untouchable.

But the classic term for an empire... I agree.

The worst single-day crime spree in modern Washington history, of course, took place on Jan. 6, 2021. Trump issued no order to the National Guard to intervene -- Mike Pence did -- and later pardoned the perpetrators.
Pence didn't pardon the insurrectionists his boss did. This was posted by a NYT reporter, bad syntax and all.

Target shooting is city’s third mass-violence incident this year
by: Matt Grant

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Monday’s shooting outside an Austin Target store that left three people dead marked the city’s third mass violence incident of the year.

Since January, there have been 269 mass shootings in the U.S., according to the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks gun-related violence. The organization defines mass shootings as “four or more” people that are shot or killed in a single incident, not including the shooter. The Federal Bureau of Investigation does not define mass shootings but defines an “active shooter” as one or more individuals attempting to kill people in a populated area. Mass killings are defined by law as “three or more people,” according to the FBI.

A KXAN review of the Gun Violence Archive’s database found, so far this year, 22 incidents in Texas that it defined as mass shootings, including two in Austin.

On June 28, four people were shot at 900 E. Braker Lane around 2:25 a.m. The victims sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, according to the Austin Police Department. On March 30, four people were shot inside Lit Lounge at 215 E. 6th Street, according to APD. A suspect was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault mass shooting.

“This is a very sad day for Austin,” said Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis shortly after Monday’s shooting. “It’s a very sad day for us all.”

Target said it is “devastated by the violence that occurred” at its store and its “hearts are with the families and loves ones of those who lost their lives, our team in Austin and all those impacted by this tragedy.”

In the wake of the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde in 2022 that killed 21 people, KXAN Investigates launched “Stop Mass Shootings”, a project to provide context and explore solutions surrounding gun violence.

Ok. 1 democrat is beginning to understand. You are not dealing with a "dirty politician". That, you know. You are dealing with a criminal and a psychopath.
Let's see if the rest of the party starts understanding.

There’s no longer any pretense this has anything to do with crime (there are cities or parts of cities in SC and Ohio that have higher crime rates than DC — send the troops there!). This is about establishing a precedent for Trump seizing control of the nation’s capital when he wants to.
