by ponchi101 This is becoming a nervous match. Both Paolini and Vekic have had break points and are making errors on them.
I say if Paolini wins the second, she takes the match. Vekic seems a bit more pressured.

by ashkor87 Yes, that was a very nervous game from Vekic to lose the second set...does she have a reputation for nerves?

by ashkor87 Vekic reminds me a bit of Collins...?

ashkor87 wrote: Thu Jul 11, 2024 2:07 pm Yes, that was a very nervous game from Vekic to lose the second set...does she have a reputation for nerves?
Not that I know of, but right now, it is not as if she is brimming with confidence out there.
She has hit at least two smashes out, and the errors are on routine shots.
She seems to have corrected with the start of the third, but Paolini seems to be more into the fight. You know, small player that is used to having to fight for every point since she was 9 years old. This is not new to her.

by ashkor87 Low quality match now .have stopped watching..my brain can take only so much- saving bandwidth for the next semi match!

by ponchi101 Change over after 5-4 says it all. Vekic shaking her head, Paolini looking like "yep, just like I like it".
My house that Vekic will commit at least one double during this service game.

by Suliso She did save a match point in this game, right? (I'm at work still)

by ponchi101
Suliso wrote: Thu Jul 11, 2024 2:58 pm She did save a match point in this game, right? (I'm at work still)
She did.
I lost my house.
But Vekic looking like she is about to do the impossible: choke and throw up at the same time.

by ashkor87 Neither of them deserves to win

Just started watching again

by Suliso Would be funny if either wins the title. Unlikely, but not impossible.

by nelslus OMG!!!!!!!!!! I watched some of that match in between bouts of sleeping, and then watched the last few games and third set tiebreaker. Watching Vekic crying so much DURING THE FREAKIN' MATCH. Vekic playing great and choking- and often during the same point.

THAT was brutal. HOW Little Fat Face keeps winning these insane matches. HEY, I'll just stand over here while the rest of you have your nervous breakdowns....Insane what Paolini has done these last two Slams.*

You can next find me watching some mixed matches, as I perseverate in the corner over Rybakina's upcoming SF match..... :freaking:

*Apparently, I created a monster during my Great Who Is The Current Most Improved Player Debate with JT. :gorgeous:

by ponchi101 A simple case of one player not being able to handle the occasion.
Jasmine Paolini. RG finalist, Wimby finalist (at a minimum). I say she is the second best player in the world right now (now meaning NOW, not in the rankings).

by skatingfan It wasn't pretty, but it was entertaining. Vekic just couldn't quite get over the line, and Paolini never gave up.

by ashkor87 Would be happy if Krejcikova does well but i expect Rybakina will overpower her.

by ashkor87 Krejcikova takes a big swing, too long to hit her shots

by ashkor87 Both similar in a way, silky smooth, except for serve...

Oh both are smooth, rybakina's is a bomb

by skatingfan Krejcikova hanging around in the first set so far - Rybakina had a sitter forehand to win the set but some how hit it in the middle of the net.

by ponchi101 Krejicova in 3.
Rybakina is hitting way more winners, and way more errors. Don't know if that is sustainable.

by ashkor87 Rybakina's first serve percentage nowhere near what it should be...
Rybakina will win in a canter though

by skatingfan Break lead for Krejcikova.

by skatingfan We're going 3.

by ponchi101 Rybakina flipped the W/UE ratio. And that is all Krecjikova needs.

by ashkor87 Yes, Krejcikova playing like a champion.

by ashkor87 I am pleased, I always liked Krejcikova..smooth as silk, quite like Rybakina. It is good to see this kind of game work.

by ponchi101 Uhm, I don't agree. Rybakina hitting too many errors. It was a match lost, not a match won.
I think.

by jazzyg Two stats told the story of that match:

Krejcikova is undefeated in tournament semfinals since the start of 2021 and Rybakina has now played 10 grass tournaments since the start of 2021 and reached the final of only one.

I brought up that second stat for a reason this week. Rybakina has the game for grass but finds a way to lose.

by skatingfan Rybakina struggles to find a way to win when the A game isn't going well, and her peak level didn't line up with the end of the tournament.

Krejcikova vs Paolini - another Grand Slam final out of left field in the WTA - both players deserve to be there but no one would have picked them 2 weeks ago based on form, and history.

by jazzyg I picked the eight women's quarterfinalists on another site before the tournament started and got zero right. Nada.

by nelslus Yup, as I have already said. Petra Lite. I KNEW she would find a way to lose.

This is just such a sad loss. Rybankina CAN play great grass court tennis. BUT, like Petra- they just keep finding ways to lose. Against any player that actually gets them to think.....AND, they stick with coaches forever without getting the best coaches for them. LOL, truly, I hate having favorite players.

At least I put one vote in for Ms. Other.

by Suliso Funny final... Absolutely unexpected. I suppose Krejcikova is a favorite, but more lucky breaks for Paolini could happen.

by nelslus On a positive note- if Krejcikova wins- and with the standards the way that they are- this should get her in the HOF.

by jazzyg I think Paolini is the favorite. She played her worst match of the tournament today and still found a way to win.

Close call on the final, though.

by nelslus ....Paolini wins- she's just then delayed for the HOF until she wins this year's US Open. :gorgeous:

I mean, Krejcikova has the experience winning Slam titles. That should mean something.....right......

I swear, I have expected SOMEONE to step up and take Paolini out. She's 2 feet tall for cryin' out loud, and this IS grass, right....SO, how did all of THAT work out.....

AND somewhere, Lulu is crying over what could have been.

by jazzyg Davenport just picked Krejcikova because she likes to get to the net.

That's an example of somebody (and I like Davenport usually) going on preconceived notions and not watching what is actually happening on the court. Paolini comes to net more often than Krejcikova and is more comfortable when she gets there. She had a hard time getting to the net against Vekic because of Vekic's power, but that will not be the case Saturday. Does not mean she will win, but the idea she just retrieves and plays clay court tennis on grass is loony if you have watched her matches at Wimbledon.

On the money.
I am surprised that people like Davenport can't see that a net game is not needed nowadays to win on ANY surface. The "bunt-it-back" passing shot has become a normal stroke for everybody.
I like Paolini to win because she truly does not get down on herself. Vekic handed her the match today, with that openly "I am super nervous" attitude. Paolini simple needed to keep the ball back.

As for Rybakina. What Nelslus said. She may get a second slam one of these days, because of her serve and power. But she is becoming an Ostapenko. Blasting balls for one set and a half, and then, the percentages bring her back to earth. So difficult to be her fan.
(I am switching to Navarro. Which I know makes no sense, but there you go).

The person who posted this (Stephanie Myles) circled the BP's but look at the UFE's for Vekic as well as the serving percentages for both Vekic and Paolini.

I could be misremembering but the best match Rybakina played that I've seen was with the roof closed and she serve botted Leylah (I think) off the court. With the roof open and someone who was going to be able to handle what she was putting down I'm a bit surprised but not shocked that Jasmine won this one. Rybakina's movement is also not the best. She reminds me more of Hantuchova than anyone else. She needs to take control of the match from the baseline and then move when she wants not because her opponent is making her move.

As for the ESPN commentators the less said the better. I'm going to give Lindsay the benefit of the doubt since her son is going deep in the Junior tournament and she may be a bit distracted. What a shame they haven't brought Chanda Rubin and Jim Courier over to provide real commentary for the casual fan and the tennisheads as well. Let Chris Eubanks come along for the ride as well.

Not definitely yet as a singles player, IMO. They don't always count in doubles Slam wins- although, sometimes, they do. Helen Sukova being an example- no singles Slam titles. But, she has a total of 14 doubles and mixed doubles Slam titles. I am not sure Krejcikova would get in yet. Win Wimbledon singles- and she is almost definitely in.

by ponchi101 2 slams at age 28. Yep, big 3 indeed.
By today's standards of parity, sounds about right.
