Want me to send you an application to my club?

Of course, not anyone. But if I am anybody ranked in the top 20, being very confident would not be hubris.

These pics are posted as rumors swirl she's going to withdraw from the Open. She has reserved practice slots though...
by ashkor87 But Jabeur has withdrawn hasn't she?!
by ashkor87 Potential day 1 upset (more than 40% prob,)..Siniakova over Keys.
by ponchi101 Upset #2. Whoever is playing Elena.
I don't think Siniakova will beat Keys. Can be a great match, but Keys plays well at the USO.

I didn't realize that until today when I saw the match as "cancelled" on the OOP.
by jazzyg Keys does not appear to be healthy coming into the tournament.
If she's healthy, she beats Siniakova 2 and 2. If not, she could lose.
by ponchi101 Keys easily over Siniakova. Maybe Siniakova concentrates on the doubles only.

That was my suspicion..that Keys is not healthy..fortunately, unwarranted
by ponchi101 Any news on why Elena withdrew?
I am starting to feel sorry for her. There is something that is bugging her and it has taken so long I wonder if anybody knows what it is.

From the US Open website, and, to quote....
“Unfortunately, I have to withdraw from my match today due to my injuries," Rybakina said in a statement. "I did not want to finish the last Grand Slam of the year this way but I have to listen to my body, and I hope I can close out the remainder of the year strong.
"Thank you to all the fans who have and continue to support me, and I wish the remaining players good luck.”
....AND, of course, there could be more to this story.....
by nelslus ....AND, apparently, 3 points into their match, Plíšková had to drop out of her match with Paolini due to an ankle injury. How sad.

Honestly that is a word salad. To my knowledge she's never given specifics of what her "injuries" are. If I'm wrong about that I apologize.
by ponchi101 Nobody withdraws from a slam match, especially when you are a favorite, without something major hurting.
But she is so quite maybe she has kept it all to herself. And her team.

Keys has enough weapons for both .pointing in both directions!
by dave g Does anyone know the cause of the medical time out in the Keys vs Mertens match at 3-2 in the third set?
by ti-amie Just saw Mertens hit a return that Keys didn't even try to go after. Her right upper thigh is heaviy taped. It's 3 all 0-40 for Keys who is serving.

Ankle bandaging. Nothing major.
by ashkor87 Looking forward to Shnaider-Pegula next round..Pegula is the benchmark, if you are a great player, you should beat Pegula..if you are just a very good player, you cannot. How good is Shnaider? Is she potentially Tier 1,? I think she may be, we will soon see. 50-50 as of now for this match...
by ashkor87 The way Coco is playing, I don't see her beating Navarro..sad to say.
by ponchi101 For those of us that like Emma, it is not sad.
I don't think Coco is that wounded. Her matches have been alright. Sometimes, you only need a couple of matches to get yourself going.
by ashkor87 watched every point of Pegula's match - hoping to see what is so special about her. Regret to say, couldnt see anything. steady, consistent, good serve, good mover - no UFEs but top 6 player in the world?! No way.
by ashkor87 If you disagree with me, please check how many GS semis Pegula has been to in her entire career...you may be surprised.

Ashkor, you take it to the extreme. NOBODY in this forum has said that Pegula is the second coming of Chris Evert, with power. We have said that she is a reliable player, that has earned her ranking. She recently won Toronto and made the Cincy finals. Those are good results.
She has never made a slam's semi? We know that. For that matter, your beloved Alexandrova, another fine player, has never made a QF (I think). What does that make of Alexandrova? A fine player, and somebody that by now we know where she stands.
It is not a dichotomy of "Great or Putrid". Right now, if you go by historical achievements, there is not one single great player, other than IGA on clay (she is excellent there). And even Iga lost on clay at the Olympics.
One final example: I love Navarro. Her FH is gorgeous and I love the stroke. Is she GS material? I say not. But she is not a dog chewed ball either.
by jazzyg Ashkor, some of your takes are downright strange.
You love Leylah Fernandez, who has been past the third round of exactly two of the 18 slams she has entered, but you are constantly discounting Pegula, who has been to six quarterfinals in the past four years. Yes, Fernandez had the one run to a final, but no sane person could argue Fernandez is a better player or has a better chance to win any slam than Pegula considering she entered all those tournaments in which Pegula reached the quarters and lost much earlier.
Pegula is a really good player. She clearly is not as good as Sabalenka or a few other top players when they are playing at the top of their game, but I'm mystified as to why you discount her over and over and over and over and over again. Makes no sense.
by ti-amie I'm just going to join the chorus in saying that in order to win a major you have to get past Ms Pegula.
by ti-amie Now that the men's draw has fallen apart I want to say that the women deserve some credit for how this draw has stood up. There could still be surprise finalists and a surprise winner but it has held.

Indeed. Rybakina's departure is the sole hole in the draw, and that was not tennis related.
We may be approaching that spot I said. Once the big three will be gone, both tours will be very open for everybody.

I don't disagree except- yes I do think Leylah has s better chance of winning a major (10%) than Pegula does (1%} and you may note that the other players mentioned by you and others are not ranked top 6..I discount Pegula mainly because her ranking and the general estimation of her, is too high. She is over-,rated, though she is very good. I have often called her the gold standard, the benchmark.. if you want to be called a great player you have to beat Pegula consistently,..a lesser player cannot do it.
And yes, I do think Navarro has lots of up-side, she could be a Tier 1 player some day - more than Pegula.
Does anyone disagree?
by ashkor87 Am so delighted to see Muchova doing well..she is the only player who comes to the net regularly and does it at the right time...would love to see her take the title..
Re Evert's distasteful comments, I would give her the benefit of the doubt..maybe all she meant is that no woman plays like her (which is in fact true)..would have been better if she had referenced Navratilova instead of 'a man'..
by ashkor87 Muchova has a clear path to the semis (hope I didn't jinx her right there!)....

by Suliso So Shnaider for the title then?
by ashkor87 watched highlights of Pegula-Shnaider (couldnt see the actual match, too late at night for me).. impressed with Peugula's court sense, ability to pull Shnaider out of position, ease with which she puts the ball in the right place after creating an opening. Nice to see.
A bit like Sloane, perhaps..except Sloane is even more subtle..

She can hit clean winners with the FH. And mechanically, it is so sound it does not break down.
The service motion is smooth and non-problematic, but she does not generate much speed. The second serve can be attacked.
She is one of those players that, if I were her, I would call Mr. Sampras, Mr. Roddick or Mrs. Navratilova and spend a couple of weeks with them, to get more pop.
by ashkor87 Sabalenka is moving much better this year..that is the one reason I didn't think she would win here...seems to have improved a lot in that regard..she is no Coco still, but not a lumbering elephant either...
Navarro will test her though, make her move and hit one more ball, which QZ couldn't do...could go either way
Navarro did it at IW. on a faster court like this one, defense is even more important..45-55 Navarro -Sabalenka
by ponchi101 I don't think that Emma has seen power like Sabalenka so far.
Of course, easily fixed with a couple of hours on court with a male player that will blast balls at her. If the person does not blast her off court (that is no training session) she will be able to adjust to Sabalenka's power.
Agree. Navarro has a chance, although Sabalenka is the clear favorite.
by ashkor87 BHM not moving well laterally..maybe that is her weakness, plus poor second serve
by ashkor87 Finals, certainly Sabalenka should win ..she has learned to control her nerves, as she showed against Navarro..of course the finals is a different atmosphere altogether...but it is her turn, I think.
