by jazzyg Not good.

He is 2-0 against Zverev but they have not played in a slam. But I would not have thought Fritz would beat Zverev in back-to-back slams, so what do I know? Paul does not hit as heavy a ball as Fritz but moves a lot better.

30/70. Paul just hasn’t won the big matches. And Zverev is in fine form.

Sure, Tommy does not have the credentials that Zverev has. But his best Slam is precisely this one, and he is playing a player that has lost all of his last slams' matches after being up. I am not sure if Zverev's diabetes catches up with him when the 5th set kicks in.

by Suliso Second time in a row Gauff drops the first set 7-5.

by ashkor87 Coco's forehand has totally collapsed. Very poor match thus far.

And Gauff’s confidence suffers accordingly. She isn’t going to beat Sabalenka or Iga like this, even if she gets through this match. Which isn’t looking good.

by Suliso Something needs to change, otherwise her position is hopeless (no break points yet!)

by ti-amie Badosa 7-5, 5-2 and serving for the match.

by ti-amie Badosa takes it 7-5, 6-4 over Gauff who lost the plot and was never able to get back to it.

by Suliso An easy win for Badosa. I'm surprised...

by JTContinental An off night for Gauff to be sure, but Badosa had her A game starting at 5-5 in the first set.

by sleepyzombie Deleted.

by jazzyg And that is why I never bought Gauff's hot streak. Her forehand and second serve still break down under pressure, and that's being kind about her forehand, which was beyond pathetic for much of this match.

The year-end tournament win, though very surprising to me, I took with a grain of salt considering all of the strange winners the event had in the past who did not run with the momentum at all--Cibulkova (2016), Svitolina (2018), Muguruza (2021) and Garcia (2022). Yeah, Muguruza was a top-flight player, but she did nothing good in the run-up before or after her title. All credit to Gauff for beating an in-form Zheng and Sabalenka in the semis and final, but it seemed out of character.

She absolutely has to fix that forehand at least a little bit to win another slam in the next year or two.

by ponchi101 How do you fix that forehand? To me, she has to move her grip a bit towards an eastern. It is too extreme right now.
And that, at this stage of her career, is almost impossible.

by jazzyg Tignor picked Badosa over Gauff today and Keys over Rybaknina yesterday, for the he doesn't know anything about tennis crowd.

Making predictions is a hard business, and when the "media person" gets its wrong, people jump all over him. Just ask Wertheim about that.

I agree. Fix was probably the wrong word. Manage it without getting into a funk is probably the better way of putting it, which she has done when she was on good runs. But it's why I've never been as high on her as others have been even though she moves incredibly well, appears to have her head on straight and has a heck of a backhand.

It is more the footwork than the grip she needs to fix- she gets too close to the ball and so cannot put her body weight into the shot..not so hard to do. On this kind of court, many players have done well with her kind of grip...including Nadal. I agree it will be a problem on low bouncing courts like grass..

It is their job to know the game.i agree anyone can make wrong predictions, including all of us. It is when the argument for the prediction shows such lack of understanding of the game, that I call it out. Keys over Rybakina was not that unexpected, Keys had been playing very well and Ryba has not. Badosa over Coco is more of a surprise but we all know Coco has problems with her forehand.

by patrick What was reason Tignor picked Badosa?

Sports are too unpredictable to say people in the business should know the game and get all their picks right.

Besides, if they actually could do that they’d be betting and making money off it instead.

No idea. I don't follow him..just to be clear, i was not commenting on his gauff-badosa pick, didn't even know about it till somebody here pointed it out

by jazzyg He did not give a reason. He writes about both players and sometimes gives a concrete reason for his pick, but this time he did not. My guess is the fact a rusty Bencic took a set off of Gauff was his rationale because when he picked that match, he mentioned there was no reason to expect someone just coming back from having a kid should be able to beat an in-form player like Gauff.

You nailed it with the big-match comment. Paul should have won both of the first two sets but tightened up when he served for it each time and was awful in the tiebreaks.

by ti-amie Pavs faded in her usual manner when under pressure losing to Sabalenka in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 3-6

by ashkor87 Alcaraz certainly has a better serving action now..it was shorter more slapping..there was a pause before he hit the ball. Glad to see it, the earlier action could have damaged his back

by ashkor87 Djokovic seems injured, hobbling..

by nelslus What. A. Nightmare.

Take your pick what I am referring to.

by Suliso So much for the younger generation having taken over completely...

by ashkor87 Djokovic is simply great..his deuce court wide serve confounded Alcaraz again and again ...

by ashkor87 Sinner - Djoko finals? Why not! They are very similar though..sinner is djoko with a touch of federer..

by jazzyg The injury helped Djokovic play a lot more aggressively like he did early in his career. I remember Federer beating him in Canada or Cincinnati before Djokovic had won a slam, and after Djokovic ran off a series of games from way down to force a third set, Federer talked in his post-match TV interview (as the winner) about how all Djokovic ever did was go for broke and try crazy shots and hope they went in and he just had to weather the storm and wait for him to cool down.

By the time Djokovic evolved into a champion, playing controlled tennis and using his wheels to win, everyone forgot how aggressive he was at the start of his career. His evolution was similar to Agassi's, and although it won him a ton, it cost him two slam matches against Wawrinka when he refused to go for his shots and eventually got hit off the court.

by mick1303 Sometimes it happens. Not often, but sometimes it does. When everyone you want to win - wins ) Today I pretty much satisfied with all four singles results - on ATP and WTA ))

In what way does Sinner have "a tough of Federer"? His net game is basically absent, his foot work on court is nowhere near Roger's, the styles are diametrically different.
It is the same thing as last year when somebody said that Sinner was an improved Djokovic and Bartoli laughed the idea off.
We can safely say that Zverev will NOT beat Novak; we have seen that movie many times. And if Novak is really back from his health issues, and beating Alcaraz in 4 says so, #25 is in the bag.

I don't see where are you coming from with this "safely". Yes, Novak pulled a miracle today, but nobody beats Father Time consistently. Eventually it comes to collect. Zverev is in his prime and does not have any injury concerns. I feel that this may be his time, especially given that Sinner is also far from 100%.

Safely, because of an 8-4 record in Novak's favor, and the fact that Zverev fades away in matches. Even though Novak is 10 years his senior, I say he is i much better shape than Alexander.
Mind you, I will eat my words with relish if I am wrong. With relish, mustard, on toast and with a glass of wine. But I don't see anybody other than a 100% in form Sinner beating Novak now.

So, you're suggesting that not running for the balls in set 2 and playing low percentage shots was just a show and Novak was not injured? You will only believe he is injured when there is an open wound and the blood is dripping?

I've seen too many matches where he appears about to drop dead on the court and after a MTO he's suddenly sprinting like a gazelle around the court as if nothing happened. I'm sorry but unless I see physical evidence of a real injury he's still Fakervic to me.

by mick1303 I guess that is because you are emotionally invested in him losing. This makes you see things that are not really there. He sure did not "sprint like a gazelle" in the 2nd set. And towards the end of the 4th started to slow down again once the painkillers began to wear off.

This kind of argument can always be flipped.
You are a fan of him, Ti isn't. The perspectives therefore can be opposite.
