Surprised by that result. I thought Mirra has more weapons.
Maybe she felt more awkward on court today than her big sister.
Mirra said afterwards that she thought Erika reads her game too well, so she (Mirra) was constantly second-guessing herself..

Meanwhile, Pegula contines to struggle on slow courts where she gets no help from the court, has to generate her own power.. lost to Wang.

Volleyers like BHM and Leylah can do well here, they have one more way to win a point...

saw the QZ LF match on youtube - the court is clearly too slow for Fernandez.. QZ was able to reach even Leylah's put-away volleys.. making it difficult to win points.. Leylahd needs the court to help her, this one did not.

I am serious here.
How do you reconcile the courts speed theory with the fact that Leylah won the first set, was competitive in the second, and then got creamed in the third? It is not as if the court speed could change during the match.
And she had beaten Zheng twice, so it is not as if this is an opponent that has her number.
To you, how was court speed a factor for two players that are reasonably similar?
And again, I am not picking on you. But I am curious about your train of thought.
(BTW. As I write this, BHM is also in deep trouble.)

Nice to see a champion like Coco blowing away lesser players like Linette, though L was playing really well

note what Sabalenka said about what it takes on a slow surface

Too bad we don't have the stats (because the WTA site doesn't have them) to see how many volley winners she has hit in this tournament. She and all other players.

From what I saw, QZ began to read her volleys better as the game went on, and Leylah could not put them away...the playing styles of the two are not similar at all.

BHM yes, I didn't see the highlights, so I don't know, but I imagine the same story there..BHM unable to put the ball away..

On a slow surface, volleying does help if you don't have huge power. Doesn't mean you can win the match just by going up there . . Especially if your opponent reads you well and gets to them
But someone like Leylah has no other option..she isn't powerful enough to hit through the court ..like Keys or Qz or ...

If Sabalenka goes to the net often against Coco today, it won't work..Coco is too quick, she will get to a lot of them. Sure, Saba can go up there to put away the ball, which the stats will count as a volley ..but it isn't, really..anyone can put away the nice high, soft balls. But actually, on Coco's forehand, she will get some of those, it may work, but not against Coco's backhand.

On this slow court, Sabalenka should be able beat Coco..if they meet at the AO I would bet on Coco. Let us see...!
