If that was the only criteria nobody would choose skiing or track and field. Clearly not the case.

Some people do.
But for skiing, that is a very expensive sport. Not a lot of people can afford it. I would believe that it is more affordable in Europe, and therefore most skiing stars are European. Michaella Shiffrin is an exception, not the rule.
Track and field is of course cheap (relatively). So the USA has a great pool of athletes there. And they are making money.

And a little bit of a data point that, if you take J/C out of the equation, the parity in the ATP is also pretty good. Although I say that a healthy Novak is still #3 in the world.
