I like that.
Old story.
One time, at one tournament, Mac and Lendl had to connect to the next tournament. Mac was flying commercial but was unable to make his flight. Lendl had chartered a plane. Reluctantly, Mac had to ask Lendl if he could hitch a ride, and Lendl said no problem.
Years later, Mac admitted that in that flight, he realized Lendl was a pretty cool guy. They never became friends, but Mac started respecting him more.
Not the story between Alcaraz and Sinner, but how quickly can things change when you actually talk to a person.

by ashkor87 Tommy Paul is one American who should do well in this tournament - he has a good serve, a good service return, and moves well.. all requirements here..
by ponchi101 I think so too. And then he goes and loses in R3, and I wonder what is it he is missing.

Not a big mystery. His forehand is too spinny and lacks pace. Fast court masks this to a degree, but can't alleviate this completely.
by ashkor87 Which third round has he lost in? He is still alive in Shanghai!

Ponchi is making fun of the prediction that Paul will do well, and eluding to one of our favourite subjects of Talk About Tennis - we are jinks - we have ruined careers just by being in the stands.

As skating says above, and I meant ANY 3R. Sure, he is alive, and next thing you know, he loses an inexplicable match.
I don't know about his FH being too spin-ny (@Mick).

And I saw him win Queens with my own eyes...your jinxes may have lost their potency?!
But I agree his forehand doesn't quite penetrate...
by ashkor87 De Minaur is the other quick-footed streak of lightning who could have done well, but I think he is still injured.. Tommy Paul is the only other one I can think of whose foot speed exceeds his overall capability..so should do better than his own average at Shanghai.
slow-footed hulks are many - Fritz, for instance.. who should NOT do well here.

You do this with frequency.
Of course he won Queens. He is a fine player. But I think he should win 2-3 tournaments a year, and should be a permanent fixture in the second week of slams, even RG.
And he isn't. And I wonder why because I like his game and strokes and he moves well. So, I just don't know what is missing (although you guys are pointing it out).
by ashkor87 His volley is also not decisive enough..though he likes to volley ..tends to just pop it up in the middle of the court..

That didn't stop Novak.
We always like to look for one stroke or one thing that the player does not do well. And you can see many champions that had technical issues on one stroke or the other. Edberg's FH was a really weak shot. 6 Slams. Evert's volleys were adequate, nothing more. You know the count. Becker's FH volley was hit with the wrong grip, Courier's BH was a very odd stroke.
Then you had perfect strikers like Laconte and currently Muchova, and they have no slams.
Plenty of players have been winners with some part of the game missing. Wilander. And his basic-skills net game.
by ashkor87 Very true. But all great players have a couple of great strengths..Paul doesn't...except for movement, I suppose...

Musetti is an opposite of "leaden-footed". His problem with fast surfaces is of different nature: tendency to long backswings. I thought that he rectified it, given his good showing at Wimbledon. But maybe this time the reason for his loss is different, I did not see the match...
by ashkor87 I have seen Mussetti live..he is far from quick.

And he did not toss the ball to serve it.
We are one bad temper away from somebody attacking an umpire. Good for Tiafoe that he apologized, but if he gets fined, he earned it.

Yes, that "rivalry" has been turned around completely. Of course, Sinner is quite younger but it seems that right now, Medvedev has simply no answers to him.
Reminds me of Pete/Chang, and Roger/Hewitt & Roger/Nalbandian. An initial big lead and then, a total flip of the script.

Only Alcaraz can trouble him here..and even there, Sinner would have the edge
by mick1303 Watched one youtuber yesterday, who made astute observation: The high of Alcaraz is higher than that one of Sinner, but the average of Sinner is higher than the average of Alcaraz. I'm afraid we will be subjected to the repeat of 2006-2007, when Nadal fans were drumming about "real #1" and elevated head-to-head to the significance it does not deserve (IMO).

Very surprisingly Alcaraz is not going to trouble anyone this week anymore.
by ashkor87 Machac is amazing.. I havent paid much attention to him.. powerful and quick, amazing reach, great touch at the net too..
by ponchi101 Problem for Alcaraz at the moment is that his game has a very large variance. Some days, he is Carlos Alcaraz. On others... well, he is Carlitos.
It is a bit odd.
I saw Machac play once. Really liked his style. Then again, he is a Czeck. He probably trains with Siniakova and Muchova (all court players).
by Suliso Let's see what he can do against Sinner.
by ponchi101 He has a chance. Not a huge one, but if he can beat Carlos, he must be playing well.

There is a reason player like Machac is outside top 30. His level of variance is even bigger (relatively) than that of Alcaraz. So the chances that he'll repeat such a good performance are not high.

I think he is simply developing as a player .I remember Lendl was a bit like him .tall and rangy...he will do well, given time.
by mick1303 Lendl was/is 188. Machac is 183. Considering that average height of tennis players continues to rise each decade, this is a difference that makes us say that Lendl was tall for his time, while Machac is just of average height. But I agree that Machac will get better. He is just not there yet.
by Suliso Taylor Fritz has turned into a formidable player over the last two years. Now in his prime years. A Slam title is not very likely, but possible with some luck.
In general right now I don't see so much competition for Alcaraz and Sinner. Who's #3 and #4 near term potential wise (not counting Djokovic anymore) on tour anyway?
by ponchi101 I don't see anybody joining them as top 4 players.
Rune is too inconsistent and by now, he should have made more noise. Has done well in MS1000's but his slam resumem is very thin.
Ruud simply is too surface specific. He is very, very good on clay, good on hards. I don't know what he is missing but his shots are not forceful enough. He can win a French, but it would be because of a bit of luck and strategy.
Stephanos, Zverev, Medvedev and Rublev have plateau'd. Sure, they can win a slam (Daniil, of course, has) but I don't see them reaching higher rankings. Zverev prophetic words will haunt him: he was one of the million future # 1 that never made it to #1.
Fritz. What you say.
Tiafoe. Too erratic and his strokes are too unreliable.
Shelton. Has the shots, not the consistency.
I remain in my opinion. We are due for a lot of parity. Unless Jannik can sustain this level. Because notice how Alcaraz is fluctuating (he is still good for 10 slams).

by jazzyg Alcaraz is going to win a lot more than 10 slams. 20 is the over/under in my view.
by
ponchi101 We really did get used to these three guys reaching that mark, didn't we?

I don't know. That is a lot of slams, implying a long career. I'll hedge at 14.
by ashkor87 Alcaraz will own the French Open almost the way Nadal did.that gives him about 10 right there. Plus 5-6 Wimbledons and a couple each of the AO and USO...close to 20..
I still don't like his serving action though, he could easily get his back injured...so how long will he last,? He is not built like a bull, as Nadal was..so maybe all this won't happen
by ashkor87 In any slam tournament, given that everyone takes it seriously, any of the 3 best players have a good chance...the rest, only an outside chance. I can see Alcaraz, Sinner, Medvedev and Zverev being there, the others, not so much. So Fritz has a chance but less than 10%..among Americans, I would say Korda, Michelsen, Shelton have more upside...as do Mensik and Machac.

Those are high expectations.
If he does that, it would mean, as you say, a career as accomplished as the careers of the Big Three. I am not ready to give him that level of confidence.
by ashkor87 He is as good as they are...let us see if he can manage his body, and career, as well as those 3 did

It is not just B&W. We have a lot of shades in this sport.
And he lost 4 & 6. Not like he was creamed on court, today.
by skatingfan I think with Fritz the mental scar tissue against Djokovic is very obvious. Up a mini-break in the tie-break and he double faults, and there were a couple of wayward forehands as well that just don't happen against most other players.

Anyway a very tight much between the past champion and the current one. No break points in the first set (total points 36-37), but Jannik takes the tiebreak 7-4.

Since when has it not been clear? But that does not mean he is a poor player, or that he has not improved in the last years.
It is not just B&W. We have a lot of shades in this sport.
And he lost 4 & 6. Not like he was creamed on court, today.
People here keep thinking/hoping ..didn't you? That Fritz would beat Sinner at the USO? Fact is, he had no chance against Sinner
Before the Open final, yes, I gave him a chance. Never said he would, I said he could.
And it is always easier to say he had no chance after the fact. Like when you gave Iga 65% chance of winning the USO, and now I could say that she never had a chance because she did not even make the semis. But, it is so easy to make predictions about the past.
As Suliso said. We are saying he is a good player and with some luck, he could win a slam (Botic does him a favor, and some other obscure factor happens). Hey, Andres Gomez is a slam winner, as is Gaston Gaudio. No reason why Fritz or somebody else can't catch a break.
(WADA wins their appeal and Jannik is suspended for the Aussie. And Carlitos losses to Botic and Novak to Popyrin).
by ponchi101 Sinner with a tough first set, then a reasonable second one.
He is gaining some separation.
My point. After Carlos won Wimby, he really looked like nothing was going to stop him. The RG final was well played, but the W final was a demolition of Novak, on one of his favorite courts. And then...
So, this sport changes in a snap. Will Sinner be the dominant guy for years to come? Maybe. On hard courts, he seems to really have reached a different level.
But this level of dominance has happened before, and it is so hard to sustain. That is all I think one can say.
