I remember reading that it's better to tear than stretch a ligament or am I misremembering?

I believe it’s a “partial tear” that is worse than a full tear.

Although if you fully rest a partial tear it’s probably better. With a partial tear you risk more damage and with a full tear you have no choice but surgery.

Note I am nowhere near a doctor :)

I was watching this begging someone - anyone - to just go and sit beside him - any sort of reaction to the man just having a breakdown - hopefully something happens after the video cuts out.

It's a vivid reminder that, at that level, you really are completely alone out there. Totally and completely alone. Tough stuff. :(

Naomi Osaka makes sudden Australian Open decision, reveals why

Tennis star Naomi Osaka made a surprising decision amid the Australian Open tournament after her happy start. The update came late Saturday in Melbourne about two hours before the pair were expected to face off in Saturday’s session.

She dropped out of the Australian Open just a few hours before she was set to play Maddison Inglis. Osaka explained that an abdominal problem related to post-pregnancy body changes forced her to withdraw. Osaka’s withdrawal wasn’t due to a new traumatic injury but a recurring abdominal problem that intensified.

Explaining more, the Japanese superstar said, “I’ve had to make the difficult decision to withdraw to address something my body needs attention for after my last match.”

And talking about her struggles due to the injury, Osaka couldn’t stop saying, “I thought I could push through it. I played my last match with some pain and thought maybe if I gave myself a break before my match, I would be able to handle it.”

The Australian Open winner of 2019 and 2021 lastly said, “I was so excited to keep going, and this run meant the most to me, so having to stop here breaks my heart, but I can’t risk doing any further damage so I can get back on the court.”

Osaka expressed her appreciation, saying she was thankful for all the love and support and grateful for how warmly everyone welcomed her. She also thanked her entire team for standing by her and acknowledged the tournament organizers for their support.

In addition to an injury which appears to be getting worse, Osaka has also been struggling for weeks with persistent symptoms such as coughing and less-than-ideal form after an infection she developed in late December or early January 2026. (see my threads here and on X/Twitter)

The top Australian Open has been marred by illness, cramping, injuries and withdrawals so far. Some players have been reported to be struggling with a gastrointestinal disease or virus, which played a role in the early defeat of tennis stars like Cobolli e Paolini
