by ashkor87 The court at Beijing appears significantly slower than the USO.. at best medium-paced. I wouldnt expect Pegula, Navarro, Mertens to do well.. they need at least SOME help from the court, which they wont get. Samsonova, Noskova, Yastremska and Kostyuk will do better than their ranking and seeding suggest. Rybakina appears to be playing well, and the court will suit her. Anisimova too, but not clear that where she is mentally - withdrew from Korea for no good reason? So: buy Rybakina, Ystaremska, Kostyuk, Noskova, Samsonova.. sell Pegula, Navarro, Mertens at this tournament..

Peng Shuai still not in the tournament?(or in the public...)

who is that? she never existed, all a figment of some woke imagination!!

by ponchi101 I see your point, but her disappearance is not far from what we have been talking about (in another topic) about fascism and totalitarian regimes.
If she is never seen again in public, she never existed. A frightening thing.

yes, that is what I was alluding to... she has probably been erased..

by JTContinental There have been periodic sightings of her in the following years, including as recently as January 2025, so I'd say she's more diluted than erased. I read she was onsite hitting balls during the Beijing tournament last year. Her entire personality does seem to be gone, though.

by Owendonovan Very interested to see if the adjustments to Coco's game have stuck at all, or if we're months away from that.

by ashkor87 looking forward to seeing how osaka does, and Andreeva too..Mirra needs a strong showing now to justify the hype. Mboko also needs to do well here.

by ponchi101 Mboko is still too young to "have to do well" anywhere. And Mirra's poor showing of late are the normal hiccups of almost all players.
This is not a generation of Steffi's, Monica's and Serena's, arriving and establishing themselves at the top in an immovable way. These players will take time.

by ashkor87 now that I have watched some of the highlights, the court looks a bit faster than medium-paced.. a tad slower than the USO, perhaps, but not much. Doesnt change the prognostication too much - I expect Leylah, Coco, Muchova to do well - better than Mertens (who is already out), Navarro, Pegula - Bencic is very versatile, she may do ok, we shall see.
Anisimova is playing very well, she may even win this whole thing..the court is just about right for her.
Probabilities:
Anisimova 30%
Swiatek 25%
Gauff 15%
Muchova, Paolini 10% each
Field 10%

Mboko will only be adding points for the next 10+ months--she bought herself a year on tour to prove that she's legit with her Canada results.

Andreeva is still recovering from a pretty serious ankle roll--she looked slow af in her US Open loss despite opinions to the contrary. I also still don't think her shot selection is at an elite level, although it has improved considerably under Conchita's eye.

They were there for Naomi too...

by ti-amie

by ashkor87 Many players are foraying to the net and it is working for them - even Kostyuk, whom I dont see normally as a volleyer, did it very effectively.. the court isnt lightning fast, so you have to do something to put the ball away, it is not easy to hit a winner. Muchova and Leylah will do well here.
as with many hard courts, those top spun second serves arent working too well.. they just sit up and beg to be hit..most players are good at that these days.. I think slice would work better .. wish someone would try it..

by ashkor87 As for Pegula, she is of course a great volleyer so was using it well, and she was hitting very deep - most of her shots were landing within a foot of the line.. would be good for her to keep that up..

by Suliso Rybakina lost to Lys - another very surprising result to me.

by ashkor87
Suliso wrote: Sun Sep 28, 2025 6:09 am Rybakina lost to Lys - another very surprising result to me.
i did see Rybakina struggling with an elbow problem in the previous match so who knows..

by JTContinental Gauff will qualify for the YEC with one more win here

by Suliso Yes, but I'd like to see what kind of crazy results would have to happen for her to NOT qualify without it. How do they even calculate that?

by ashkor87 and.... Badosa pulls a Badosa.

by ponchi101 I stopped keeping track of her retirements. By now, it is accepted. Her body can't deal with this sport for more than a couple of weeks.

She likely will. Someone much mathier than me on the WTA Live Ranking site figures out the the point total needed to lock down a spot each week--this week the qualifying cut line is 5350 points and Coco is currently sitting at 5304.

people are just tired after a long season, maybe.. Alcaraz has pulled out of Shanghai, after complaining about the schedule. This court is so unforgiving, you have to hit the ball a million times to get it past your opponent, Swiatek must have gotten frustrated..she is human, I guess.

by ponchi101 I really would like to hear from the old guard, playing 20 tournaments a year, and flying in commercial airlines, about the length of the season.
And I do mean it. Not being sarcastic. I would love to hear what Vilas would say about the long season nowadays.

and the wta website (which just won an award!) talks about how Andreeva got past Kartal.. wonder which world they live in!

by ashkor87 very impressed with Eva Lys.. great movement, footwork, balance.. I hear she has an automimmune condition she has to manage.. sad to hear.
Born in Ukraine, moved to Germany at age 2..

How many of those flights were domestic within the US? There used to be a lot more tournaments in the US, and players would go to Europe for a few months or less, and then back to the US.

by JTContinental Anisimova punches her ticket to her first YEC with her win over Paolini.

Absolutely. The US summer circuit was there for a reason.
But the US is not a small country. It is not France, where you cannot fly for more than an hour without leaving the country.
You know my position. Carlos has played 74 matches this year, which is a lot by modern standards. He may finish the year around ... 90? That is 54 matches less than Vilas' record.
Really. I would like to have a glass of wine with Vilas and talk about that.

by ashkor87 Hoping for a Noskova - Pegula semifinal.. Noskova is one of my favorites, young player with great potential.. Anisimova - Coco will be a great semifinal too.. I still expect Anisimova to win this title but it is getting very tough now. Coco is defending champion after all.

by ashkor87 well, that worked out. I hope Noskova gives a good account of herself.

by ashkor87 On a relatively slow court like this one, there are only 3 ways to win:
1. blast winners - for which you need to be able to generate your own power, lots of it.
2. go to the net and put away volleys - you need foot speed to get there, court sense to know when to go there, plus touch and feel to put the volley away - Paolini, Pegula, did that here.
3. it is theoretically possible to just wear your opponent down, by returning everything, redirecting the ball, creating openings and then hitting through them.Navarro did that against Swiatek. Bencic does that too. Mertens is another.. Sloane used to be great at it.
The trouble with method 3 is that you will, sooner or later, come up against a good practitioner of methods 1 or 2, in which case you cannot win.
which is how people beat Medvedev these days - they dont try to rally with him - Zverev tried and it didnt work.

In general, women who have the power to blast winners are not many but there is a handful - Sabalenka, Anisimova, Noskova, Rybakina, Keys
Great Practioners of method 2 are Pegula, Paolini, Muchova, Leylah. Maybe Krejcikova.
Not sure about Swiatek and Coco..
Wuhan is the last test of the season (the Riyadh court is similar, too, I think).

I am not the only person who thinks these slow courts are not to Pegula's liking .. Pegula says so herself.

by ashkor87 Anisimova just beat Coco 1 and 2

by ashkor87 being greedy, I now want Noskova to beat Pegula..or, at least, do well...

NOWWWW i am happy. This court suits Noskova, doesnt suit Pegula. Not that I dislike Pegula, just that I am happy to see my conjecture proved right. Too many people here think court speed is a myth, of no consequance.

You can call me by name. No issues there. After all, I have put that in writing. And it is not TOO MANY PEOPLE. I have yet to see somebody else talk about court speed. Certainly not with the frequency that you bring it up.
But, if you don't mind, the next time that your predictions do not pan out, mention that too. Otherwise, It is called confirmation bias.
Also: good calls.

I only do it because nobody else seems to bring it up. As I said below, if nobody is interested, I am happy to stop posting.

I do, often. You may not have been noticing.
anyway, it is not the prediction that matters - I am not betting after all (illegal here anyway!) - my point is my discussion of what happens when the court is slow, which is a more general discussion about tennis. I would have expected more people to comment, but nobody does.. except you, and your main point is it doesnt matter (which I dont agree with).
If nobody is interested, I am happy to stop posting. I do not need anybody's endorsement.

by Suliso Do we think Anisimova will win a Slam (or two) and rise to #1 next year? I think there is a fair chance of that happening.

by Owendonovan I do! (once she stops taking these one set breaks)

ashkor87 wrote: Fri Sep 26, 2025 3:36 pm now that I have watched some of the highlights, the court looks a bit faster than medium-paced.. a tad slower than the USO, perhaps, but not much.
Swiatek 25%
Gauff 15%
Muchova, Paolini 10% each
Field 10%
very odd score though, in the finals - 6-0, 2-6, 6-2.. must watch highlights to see what happened..

by mick1303 Since the turn of the century it has been 25 players in WTA, who won multiple Tier I tournaments in a single year. Amanda Anisimova became #26. Previous one (#25) was Andreeva, who also done it this year.

The fact that nobody has replied to your post does not mean they are uninterested. People read a lot here.
And yes, you and I are in disagreement about court speed. I believe other factors are much more important. Balls make a more variable factor than court speed nowadays (to me).
But nowadays, it is not the 90's, in which you had some courts that were like polished glass and some were molasses. You knew that if a Spaniard player was going to play Pete on an indoor court late in the season, his chances were nil. On clay, early in the spring? He had a very good chance.
Now, all courts are roughly the same. I believe that is one of the reasons why the big three were able to complete career slams, and J/C will too. In the meantime, Connors, Mac, Lendl, Wilander, Edberg, Becker and Sampras were not able. The courts were way different in the past.

I don't believe she can win two. One, yes, two, that is a bit too much.
And rising to #1 takes a lot of consistency. And I believe she does not focus as well as she could on the sport. She has a life outside of the court. So, I don't know. I believe Aryna and Iga will remain the two players ranked at the top.

The same number for men is only 14 players. Big 3 effect in a nutshell

Yep. I remember when the sole MS1000 that would be won by other players was Paris-Bercy, simply because R/R/N would not go there. And then they started going and it was over for that too.
