de Minaur isn't going without a fight. I thought Foki had the set and match locked down but de Minaur leveled it at five all. Foki held for 6-5 so de Minaur will have to hold his serve to force a tiebreak.
Foki took the first set 7-5. de Minaur took the second set 6-1.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to his wife after losing to Alex de Minaur in the Washington final
“I wanna say thanks to my wife. She’s supporting me every day. I’d say it’s not easy to support me every day, because I’m a little bit tough. Thank you for supporting me every day.”

ADF's match closing challenges are well-documented, to say the least. But this was just downright brutal. I hoped beyond hope he was in the clear while serving for the match at 5-3, 15-0 when ADM completely botched a volley. That really should have done the trick. But then ADF doubled to make it 30-15, and you could just see it coming.
ADF did very well to keep fighting, and like always, he had his chances to overcome. But ADM came up with the good when he really needed them, and that is the fundamental difference between these two--has been for a while.
Heartbreaking stuff. And the post-match video of ADM consoling him summed it up.
Brutal. Just brutal. Especially after ADF showed the goods and fortitude to survive the Fritz match. But no one will remember that.

Oh well there are no videos anywhere from the men's final. Maybe they're on Xitter but I don't go there.
Dry they're ripping ADF a new one on the big men's tennis fan site.

Of course they are. That's what people do. We should just add a "how to abuse professional athletes online" to global first grade curricula.

De Minaur stayed in it with a defensive lob that caught the outside of the sideline on one of the match points. ADF hit a pretty good shot off of it, but did not put the next volley away, allowing de Minaur to hit a passing shot. I don't feel like he choked that match away, like he did from 5-2, 15-40 up against the inferior Kecmanovic earlier this year. He just got unlucky.
For the last three years, I've felt like ADF was a top 10 talent with the 200th-ranked brain, but he's improved significantly in that department. The abuse he took in the past (the underhand serve on match point against Rune at Wimbledon two years ago and other brain camps) was somewhat justified, but not this time. He got some bad breaks against a very good player.
