Gauff and Pegula - seeded #2 - are out in the 1st round - to Leylah and Gavrilova, who simply played better on this night.

I was surprised with how short Gavrilova is when I saw her in Granby. She was very nice to people, as she was one of the players that the fans recognized most there - she signed autographs and posed for photos with what seemed to be a genuine smile all along.

Leylah and Gavrilova are essentially a business pairing. Both are sponsored by Lululemon clothing.
Lululemon also paired Leylah with Jack Sock in Mixed Doubles (Sock wears Lululemon, as well).
It's unfortunate when businesses get involved in on-court matters like this. Their only on-court input should be to provide clothing/shoes/racquets to the players, not to put doubles teams together, etc.

Read there were controversy in that doubles match where Gauff had a clean winner at net in deciding tiebreak. Paper was flying at the back end of the court after Gauff hit the winner and Saville hollered let and the chair agreed. That winner would have reduced the Americans deficit to 7-6. After the match, the crowd let the chair know about what happened.

Yeah... there's a lot of American based misinformation about that point...
The paper was flying around on the court area (within the court lines) in back of Gauff/Pegula, and Gavrilova stopped moving and called 'let' suring the point considerably before Gauff had the easy putaway - about 4 seconds before. Gauff's easy putaway would not have been so easy if Gavrilova had not completely stopped.
There is no question that Gavrilova called 'let' because of the paper being distracting, and definitely NOT because they were about to lose the point, as the American media people are claiming.

That Gavrilova called 'let' before the umpire may not be the 'proper' thing to do... but that's the fault of the umpire, who should have called it sooner, as it was very obvious.

Some unusual countries have seeded players this time, particularly in the boys' draft.

So far today I've seen Eala, Godsick, Okutoyi and now I'm watching Mboko. Young Godsick was up 5-2 or 5-1 in the first set, started DF'ing all over the place and lost the first set 7-5 and lost the match in straight sets. I thought he was younger but he's 18.

LOL, Rajeev and Joe almost, kinda-sorta, found a way to lose another huge Slam match with match points in their favor. Apparently, if I heard this correctly- they had 4 match points in the 2nd set- including a 0-40 lead, up at that point 6-5, 5-4. (I wasn't watching- I just caught the last couple of games). VERY fortunately for my favorites, they broke the first game of the third set- and held the lead- albeit Rajeev had to save one break point in that last game. (They never were broken- the other team was 0/3 with breaks.) PHEW!! :)

With the forecast the way it is there won't be much doubles play outside of Armstrong and juniors may be a wash. If singles wrap up quickly on Ashe I can see them moving some play there though.

I am seriously shocked that Dolehide and Sanders smacked down Garcia and Mladenovic 3 & 3. They just played great tennis, winning so many big points. VERY happy about this result- albeit, I'd be most geeked if Taylor and Caty somehow managed to take the title.

....AND now Taylor and Caty play even better than Dolehide and Sanders, taking out Krawczyk and Schuurs 3 & 1- AND they were broken once. Just outstanding play.

LOL, Leylah and Jack lost the first set- were up a double break in the second set- got it to deuce with first Leylah serving, and then to deuce with Jock serving (i.e., two set points)- and lost to the better doubles team of Sanders and Peers. Jack was, for his level of doubles, pretty pitiful- just a lump. Did very little to move, poach and try to protect Leylah's serve- she was over-all the better player today. Then, we he was serving for the second set, he was real Nick-lite- going for these stupid "big" shots, trying a Sampras-esque-jump-in-the-air smash, only, of course to hit it out- I felt bad for Leylah today (and same for Coco in the Wimbledon SF, albeit I did not see that match). Still- congrats to the Aussies!
