So. Dallas. Where do you bring in you hat, sun screen, water and camera to take a few pictures?
It is getting to the point of: why even go, if you are going to be harassed at the gate?

This is standard policy at events in the U.S. My gripe when we went to Charleston is that they don’t sell clear bags anywhere on site or outside the gate that can be used for this purpose. And don’t open your water bottle on the shuttle from the parking lot because you can only take in an unopened water bottle.

Not likely any incident - just more complete B.S. of people looking to control people under the pitiful guise of 'protecting' everyone.

These kinds of heavy-handed and idiotic rules have significantly affected the enjoyment level I once had at tournaments. I don't enjoy tournaments nearly as much as I used to - and most of the reason is that there is much less freedom permitted at tournament sites.
Hell, my friends and I used to bring our racquets to pro tournaments and hop on any empty practice court to hit a few balls - and it was never a problem, because no harm was being done. This was as recently as 10 years ago. But today, not only are racquets prohibited from being brought in (although you can BUY one onsite, of course! ), but you can't so much as bring in water bottles or sunscreen (but you can buy them onsite, as well!!).

We had a 10 minute discussion with Jimmy Connors about racquets when he was one of the top 3 players in the world. Today, you can't get within 15 feet of top players, who are guarded like the president of a country, with security on all sides - unless it's to get them to scribble something illegible for 100 people at a time. But talk with them today? Ha - never in a million years!

These rules are way, way over the top, entirely unnecessary, and protect absolutely no-one.

by JazzNU Potentially only available to those in the US, but this one of Bublik's racquet smash has commentary that I appreciated - "Is...is that just a warning? lol"

https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/35623676

by Deuce It's just a warning simply because it's his first code violation of the match. So whether he smashes one racquet one time, or smashes three racquets 5 times each, the penalty is the same if it is the first code violation.
If he then smashed one racquet one time 20 minutes later, it would be a loss of a point.
It (usually) has nothing to do with the severity of the offence - it's the timing that matters most - as in whether it was the first, second, or third code violation, etc.

It is nice to see Bublik finally caring about something tennis-related, though. He is known as a very naturally gifted player who plays with zero intensity and really doesn't care if he wins or loses. This is a welcome change to that.

Yes... it's fun to see him turning back the clock to the good ol' relentless serve & volley days.

Both semis leading to this final were pretty good quality for all involved. When Cressy is playing well, he's a pleasure to watch.
Yes, bringing back the volleying game..missing for so long...
And to make it sweeter, he is a Bruin ,,(like me)

by Deuce Cressy is playing really well in the Final, taking Sinner to a tiebreak in the 1st set (which Sinner won).
Indoor hardcourt is often the best setting for serve & volleyers...

I have seen him play once, and I don't like his volleys. I suspect the racquet limits him, as that Babolat cannot hit a crisp stroke. It is designed for bashing balls from the back court, and when he gets to the net, he has to soften the stroke too much.
He would be a much better volleyer if he would switch to a control racquet. Yonex, Wilson or Head would be more suitable.

by ashkor87 the fact is, if you come to the net, you dont even have to volley well - the odds are on your side anyway! 50% of the time, your opponent will do something stupid trying to hit a glorious pass when all he/she needs to do is get it back, of the remaining 50%, the volleyer only needs to win 50% to make it a 75% overall!

by ponchi101 Uhm, as a former S&V player, I completely disagree. And especially at the pro level.
A guy like Rafa, Novak, Agassi, Borg (BORG!) and many others will pass you easily if the volley has floated. They can pass you on two steps, hitting a soft pass below the net and forcing you to volley up and then pass you with a second shot, or pass you clean on the first. Borg was the master at the two strokes passing shot: one heavy topspin first shot, and made you volley from your shoelaces, and then pass you clean on the second. Rafa is great at that too.
If you did not even need to volley well when coming to the net, more players would do it. There is a reason we have not seen a successful S&V player since Sampras. Or Edberg, who could hit winning volleys from his shoes. No coincidence that they both used the same racquet all their lives.

by Deuce Sinner won it (6-3 in the 2nd).
Cressy now has to play the doubles Final.

As far as racquets go, I agree that Babolats are not 'comfortable' racquets, and are made more for baseline power than for touch or control. I, myself, am more of a touch/control player who likes to volley, and I've hated every Babolat frame that I've tried. Too stiff and too light. The weight can be tweaked, of course - but not the flexibility and feel.
That said, I'm sure that Cressy has tried a bunch of different frames from different companies, and he has settled on the Babolat (Aero, I think) - so I figure he probably knows what works for him.

by Owendonovan Cressy's volleys might not be the crispest, but the visible frustration of his opponents while Cressy's at net is visible. (it's always for to watch Rune get all bent out of shape). His serve is top notch as well when it's clicking.

Sure, because we agree that, right now, he is unique. It comes back to the mantra of the S&V: you passed me? Let me see you do it again. And again. It takes a lot to deal with that pressure. And it does not take a lot to get Rune out of his rocker. So, that must have been a fun match to watch for the (increasing number of) people that do like Hölger.

well, Cressy does have a very good serve too..

by ponchi101 He does. And, to be clear, it is just me saying that I don't like his volleys. You don't make the finals of any tournament with completely faulty volleys (if you play S&V). His serve is very good, but his BH volley floats a bit much.
And, again. Due to my lack of coverage (they are playing the Cordoba final today and nobody is showing it down here, for example), I have only seen him play once. So, as I always say, a sample of one is no good. Maybe he has improved a lot, or he was a bit off that day, or many other aspects. But the say I saw him, that is something he needs to work on.
Pay Mr. Edberg a LONG visit. Or Mr. Annacone.

He is the younger brother of another Chinese player, Who...
(indeed, never heard of him)

by Deuce Ditto - he's unknown to me, as well.

On a separate note... is there some sort of link between the Dallas tournament and the Montpellier tournament? Are they 'sister tournaments' or something?
Because their court surface colours are the exact opposite of each other (and both are difficult on the eyes)...

I only heard of him when he started beating my Around The World Players.

by skatingfan I first heard about Wu when he won the 2017 US Open Junior title, and then again last year at the US Open when he made the 3rd round, and lost to Medvedev. The pandemic, the loss of lower level tournaments, and the ability to travel from China really seem to have set him back so great to see him break through in a big way.
