I do not see any problem for Jannik reaching final here. Mostly will probably face Hurkacz in Final.

by Suliso Sinner is playing too much lately. He might even withdraw of this one. Or lose early.

He might withdraw but if play he will not lose early.

by ponchi101 His final in Rotterdam is already going long. And they have no Byes in Marseille. I say he will have to pull out. Hope not (he is in most of the ATW teams).

by ashkor87 Not surprised Nadal pulled out...he needs to rest his body, not slog through a 250 level event...IW and Miami suit him better anyway, and his buddy owns iW..

by ponchi101 I agree that he needs to rest his body. And he needs to rest it all the way to Monte Carlo. Especially if Novak can play IW and MIA, which he will win.

by nelslus It's always a lovely day when the Woman-Beater loses. Still, I can't wait for the snarky ATP's take on Wozniacki, with his inevitable 50-hour matches. to retire.

by ptmcmahon Sinner out (fever):

by ponchi101 More walkovers.
This a is a trend, and both the ATP and WTA have to start looking at it. Are players being asked to play too much (this would have nothing to do with Sinner having a fever)? Are they just simply not playing when they don't want to?
Not saying one way or another, but something is happening and both tours need to find out.

by Suliso Sinner shouldn't have signed up for three straight tournaments. I guess his excuse is that he didn't expect to do as well as he did in the first two.

by ponchi101 Well, he claims it was a fever. That is easily checked, so I don't think he is fatigued or anything. He most likely does have a fever.
I'll take his word.

As I've said elsewhere, I think it's a case of today's players being so coddled and spoiled, getting paid obscene amounts of money, getting everything they want, having 'staff' do everything for them at tournaments, etc., that if they don't feel absolutely 100%, they pull out.
They have no sense of commitment to the fans, to the tournament, or to the sport. It is much more take than give. THAT is the difference between today's players and yesterday's players.

I doubt that a guy like Connors is happy with the frequency of players quitting these days. Connors would have gone out to play in a wheelchair if he were allowed to.

That said, COVID-19 has had an impact in the number of withdrawals and even in in-match retirements - aside from not feeling well if one has COVID, there is the element of not wanting it to be transmitted to others. Even if COVID has not been confirmed in a person, if it's suspected, a withdrawal is warranted.
But even during the pandemic, 90% of the withdrawals and in-match retirements do not appear to be COVID-related in any way.

This a is a trend, and both the ATP and WTA have to start looking at it. Are players being asked to play too much (this would have nothing to do with Sinner having a fever)? Are they just simply not playing when they don't want to?
Not saying one way or another, but something is happening and both tours need to find out.

Add yet another...
Goffin withdrew before his match with Mikael Ymer.

Tennis either has the most fragile athletes in any professional sport, or the least committed.
Either way, it's embarrassing.

Tsonga looks like a soon to be middle aged man watching a tennis match here.
I vividly remember seeing him play in Juniors - I believe it was just a couple of months ago.
Ugh.
I wish there were a way to slow down Time...

by Deuce Smashing several racquets a couple of weeks ago... a few good wins this week...
Has Bublik finally decided to take his tennis seriously?
If so, the other players are in trouble, because he has loads of very natural ability. People commonly didn't realize this, because he never took tennis seriously and didn't care if he won or lost.
Maybe even he himself didn't realize how much talent he has until now...

Bublik:

by Ainsley Daniil Medvedev is on a roll since losing in the 3rd round at the Australian Open to Sebastian Korda in straight sets.

Looks like Hubie Hurkacz put a freeze on Bublik's bank account with a straight sets win today 6-4, 7-6. :D

by Ainsley This makes two straight titles for Medvedev since the Australian Open. He is now off to Dubai where he will be up against some stiff competition in Novak, Rublev, FAA, Hurkacz.

by ponchi101 Won't play Dubai. Will withdraw due to fatigue.

It is a shame because this tournament will be a nice true test for him with a lot of challenges in his opponents.

by ponchi101 He is scheduled for a severe beating by Novak in the SF. More reason to not even bother.

That would be the huge test for him if he were to play in the next tournament. I doubt he would beat Novak, but sooner or later he is going to be across the net from him and we are all going to have to see if he can get the job done.
