by meganfernandez Gauff bagels Ostapenko, who only won 7 points in the first set. She's spraying. Coco's going to need a practice session after this match. Keys hit the practice court after the Pegula match yesterday.

by dryrunguy Here's hoping someone on Coco's team reminded her that taking the first set from Ostapenko means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

by ashkor87 Ostapenko having to win every point 3 times!

by ashkor87 Nothing wrong with Coco's forehand today!!

Except she didn't even win them once. Gauff didn't have to do much, just keep the ball in, loop it at times, scramble at times. Ostapenko has had around 200 errors for the tournament. She stopped running on the last point, which was long, but Coco just looped a forehand crosscourt, and Ostapenko didn't move. She might have thought it was going wide, but facing match point, maybe you'd want to cover it just in case.

Gauff said she gets along well with Ostapenko off the court.

Nope. She didn't serve well in the last game, lots of missed first serves and a double, but she was more than good enough.

by meganfernandez Mary Joe just said Coco it her heavy favorite to win the title. Has she forgotten that Sabalenka is alive and well?

by JTContinental Yes but Sabalenka hasn’t won 15 of her last 16 matches.

JTContinental wrote: Tue Sep 05, 2023 5:48 pm Yes but Sabalenka hasn’t won 15 of her last 16 matches.
That doesn't make Gauff the heavy favorite. Sabalenka is better than distant second.

by JTContinental I agree "heavy favorite" is an overexaggeration (it is Mary Joe after all), although I'd give her a slight edge, especially given the murderer's row her draw has been.

by jazzyg I like Mary Joe Fernandez, but calling Gauff the heavy favorite is just America bias that they all guilty of, and it's not intentional like cynical fans think. The announcers are emotionally invested in the Americans doing well and it clouds their judgement. Having said that, Fernandez might turn out to be right, but the belief that Gauff is a heavy favorite is not coming from an objective voice.

I love watching Ostapenko play when she is in form, but I was not as impressed with her against Swiatek as all of the commentators. She played well, but that was all about Swiatek crumbling under the pressure. Even while crumbling, she must have hit 10 winners off of service returns, and Gauff did the same thing today in sweltering conditions that did not favor an out-of-shape Ostapenko.

Gauff is playing very well, but I think I would pick either Sabalenka or Keys over her if they met in the final. I reserve judgement until I see the next few matches, but that's how I lean right now. For those who laugh off Keys, her facing Gauff in the final would mean she beat Vondrousova and Sabalenka back to back. If she's not up to snuff, she'll never get to the final anway, but if she does, heck yeah, I would like her chances in the final.

KEYS?!

C'mon man!

by ponchi101 Correct me if wrong, and I think I very well be.
Isn't Coco with Roger's agency? Which means, Tony Godsic's? Which means, Mary Joe's husband MANAGES Coco? Which means, freaking CONFLICT OF INTEREST WRITTEN IN FONT 250?

Yes
Yes but it's Brad Gilbert who has a huge conflict of interest.

by skatingfan I have a hard time caring about the conflicts of interest of colour commentators. Maybe because of my fandom of the incestuous figure skating, but I just can't bring myself to care if the commentator has a professional relationship with a player.

Same, at least for on-court interviewers. In the booth, it’s a little icky. They have a rooting interest and I don’t know if I’m getting a fair story about the opponent.

by dryrunguy About Muchova/Cirstea opening set, that may be one of the closest bagel sets I've ever seen.

Yes. A 6-0 set that lasted 43 minutes. And one game that was 17 minutes long.
Too bad for Sorana, because I really like her, but maybe she can build on this.

by martini4me What are the commentators doing ON THE COURT between matches? Or is that just a green screen background that I'm not picking up on?

by martini4me No, they actually are on the court, with 3-4 lighting guys / cameramen in front of them. Get out of the way so they can play tennis.

by Fastbackss Glad they spun at the end so I could see how they made Chris stand on a box during it

by Fastbackss Thank goodness Blake is announcing tonight

by Owendonovan I need Brad to stop mentioning the "shape of shots". So far, Tiafoe is flat, Shelton is having the good time he's been having at the Open. Now if we can get a final between a couple 20 year olds..... Would that be the first time in 20+ years someone named Nadal, Federer, or Djokovic wasn't in a GS final?

I haven't really checked but there was that Thiem vs Zverev final in the 2020 US Open.

by ponchi101 Cilic/Kei (2014?)

by skatingfan Murray-Raonic 2016 Wimbledon

by skatingfan Those are the 3 finals since Safin def Hewitt in the 2005 Australian Open final to include none of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.

by skatingfan I didn't expect Tiafoe to defend the semifinals from last year, but I didn't expect Shelton to be the person to deny him the spot.

And yet Patrick McEnroe kept saying how Muchova blazed through the first set. hah! A 17 minute game is blazing? A 43 minute set is blazing? Someone needs to buy him a watch! And he said it 3 or 4 times?! I was shouting shut up to my tv.

After I've woken up each morning- I try to remember to scream for Pat McEnroe to shut up, out there somewhere in the universe. It'll make you feel better.

I didn't expect Tiafoe to make the QF (or R16, etc.) So, these days, a solid result for him- albeit, CLEARLY, the draw was his friend.

I think we have named 4

Cilic-Nishikori USO 2014
Murray-Raonic Wimbledon 2016
Thiem-Zverev USO 2020
Alcaraz-Ruud USO 2022

What an insane stat.

The easiest job on earth. Being a Talking Head. They have their pre-set analogies and there is seldom any form of analysis from their side. So, if a set is 6-0, it was a trashing. Never mind everything you say. It was 6-0, and that is a fact. But that was a very odd 6-0 for all the other reasons you mention.
It is like they have preset narratives. Zverev cannot hit one double fault without everybody bringing up he fact that he is a "serial double faulter". Rune hits 12 DF in a match? Nah, no mention of that because the narrative on Rune is not that he double faults a lot (it is a different narrative).
