The show had difficulty maintaining interest in this household. I thought I would watch more (once it was determined before the competing Sunday night football game that the Bills were in the playoffs) but I was mistaken

I didn't watch but he's already issued an apology of sorts for his performance.

He was dreadful. Lame. Embarrassing. Worse than Letterman's "Oprah, Uma" tank.

SAG Awards 2024 Nominations: ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ Tie for Films, ‘Succession’ Leads All With Five Nods
By Jordan Moreau, Brent Lang

“Barbenheimer” dominated nominations for the 30th Screen Actors Guild Awards, just as the two blockbusters ruled over last year’s box office. Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” received a leading four nominations, including nods for their ensembles. The movies will vie for that top prize alongside “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple.”

On the television front, “Succession” had a leading five nominations for its final season. It was followed closely behind by “Ted Lasso,” “The Bear” and “The Last of Us,” which earned four nominations apiece. “Succession,” a look at an aging media mogul and his children, is up for best ensemble in a drama series. It will compete against “The Crown,” “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us” and “The Morning Show.” Best TV comedy ensemble will be a race between “The Bear,” “Ted Lasso,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Abbott Elementary” and “Barry.”

Warner Bros. Discovery had the most nominations of any media or technology company, receiving 20 for its films and shows, a group that includes “The Last of Us,” “Succession,” “The Color Purple” and “Barbie.” It was followed by Netflix, with 12 nominations and Apple with 11.

The awards will celebrate performances in films and shows released during one of the most tumultuous years in the history of the union, one that saw its members go on strike for 118 days after contract negotiations with the studios broke down. A new pact was reached in November, with the actors receiving pay increases. The deal also enhanced the residuals actors earn when their work appears on streaming services and included protections against the use of artificial intelligence.

SAG’s choices are closely scrutinized because they often overlap with those of the Oscars. After all, many of its members are also part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Last year, for instance, the four performers who won SAG awards — Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis — went on to capture Oscars for their work. And though SAG doesn’t have an award for best film, its selections can provide hints about which movie is best positioned for Academy Awards glory. Since its inception in 1995, only four movies have won best picture at the Oscars without receiving a nomination from SAG for cast ensemble: “Braveheart” (1995), “The Shape of Water” (2017), “Green Book” (2018) and “Nomadland” (2020).

“Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy, who plays the haunted physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, was nominated for best leading actor, alongside Paul Giamatti, a veteran character actor who gets a starring role as an ornery prep school teacher in “The Holdovers.” The two actors won the prizes for best lead performance in a drama and best lead performance in a comedy at last Sunday’s Golden Globes. They will compete against Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), Jeffrey Wright (“American Fiction”) and Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”).

Best leading actress in a motion picture will be a race between frontrunners Lily Gladstone, who plays an Osage woman targeted for her wealth in “The Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Emma Stone, portraying a woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery in “Poor Things.” Both women captured top acting prizes at the Globes. They will compete at the SAG Awards against Carey Mulligan (“Maestro), Annette Bening (“Nyad”), and Barbie herself, Margot Robbie.

It was a “Succession”-heavy lead actor in a drama series crop, with Kieran Culkin, Brian Cox and Matthew Macfadyen all nominated. Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) and Billy Crudup (“The Morning Show”) round out the category. Best actress in a drama series will be a contest between Sarah Snook (“Succession”), Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Elizabeth Debecki (“The Crown”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”) and Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”).

“Ted Lasso” stars Jason Sudekis and Brett Goldstein will square off in the best actor in a comedy race alongside “The Bear” co-stars Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Bill Hader, recognized for the final season of the hitman comedy “Barry,” was also nominated. Best leading actress in a comedy series will be a contest between Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”) and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” duo of Alex Borstein and Rachel Brosnahan.

There were some notable snubs and surprises among this year’s crop of contenders. Leonardo DiCaprio was overlooked for his starring role in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” as was Greta Lee, who received raves for her turn in “Past Lives.” Penélope Cruz, however, made the cut in best supporting actress for her performance in “Ferrari” despite being overlooked by other awards bodies. And “May December,” one of the year’s most acclaimed films, was completely shut out with stars Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman and Charles Melton failing to get nominated. On the TV front, “The Gilded Age,” a period drama about 19th century New York society, was not widely expected to earn an ensemble nod, while “Yellowjackets,” a buzzy series about a group of plane crash survivors, was snubbed.

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will stream live globally on Netflix for the first time this year on Feb. 24.

‘Oppenheimer’ Wins Big at 2024 BAFTA Film Awards (Full Winners List)
'Barbie' was shut out, but then the BAFTAs don't have a song category.

By Paul Grein
02/18/2024

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was the big winner at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards. The ceremony took place on Sunday (Feb. 18) at London’s Royal Festival Hall. David Tennant, star of Doctor Who, served as host.

Oppenheimer won seven awards, including best picture, best director (Christopher Nolan), best actor and supporting actor (Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson).

Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things won five awards, including best actress (Emma Stone). Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest collected three. Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers took two.

Two individuals were double winners on the night — Nolan (best director and best picture, as a producer) and Glazer for The Zone of Interest (best British film and best film not in the English language).

Most of the top BAFTA winners are expected to also win at the Oscars on March 10. Among them: Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who won best supporting actress for The Holdovers. One acting race remains too close to call at the Oscars. Despite his BAFTA loss, Paul Giamatti is still very much in the Oscar race for best actor for The Holdovers.

Göransson’s win for best original score marks his first BAFTA Award. The BAFTA winner for original score has gone on to win the Oscar in that category in nine of the least 10 years. If Göransson does take the Oscar, it will be his second win in that category. He won five years ago for Black Panther.

Killers of the Flower Moon was shut out, despite nine nominations. Other films with five or more nods that were blanked were Maestro (seven nods), All of Us Strangers (six) and Barbie and Saltburn (five each). (The BAFTAs don’t have a category for best original song, a category in which Barbie probably would have prevailed — just as it expected to at the Oscars.)

Sandra Hüller was nominated for both lead actress (Anatomy of a Fall) and supporting actress (The Zone of Interest), but lost both awards.

20 Days in Mariupol won best documentary, besting a pair of music docs — American Symphony, about Jon Batiste, and Wham!, about the 1980s chart-topping pop duo.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor performed “Murder on the Dancefloor,” her 2001 song which soundtracked a racy scene in Saltburn.

Dua Lipa and David Beckham were among the presenters. Prince William, who has been president of BAFTA since February 2010, was in the audience. Michael Sheen, Tom Hiddleston and Judi Dench, among others, participated in a pre-recorded sketch.

Here’s the full list of nominations for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with winners marked. (Next post)

Here’s the Complete List of the 2024 SAG Awards Winners
By Tom Smyth, a Vulture news blogger covering TV and pop culture

The 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles on February 24, and for the very first time streamed live on Netflix. The ceremony had no host, which meant Nick and Vanessa Lachey were saved from struggling through another Netflix live show, and instead Idris Elba hijacked the show. In addition to that ill-fated Love Is Blind reunion, Netflix also streamed live broadcasts of a Chris Rock comedy special and a celebrity golf tournament last year, so it was a little bold of them to think they could get through the show with no issues or lags. (And for the most part, minus one pesky teleprompter, they did.)

This year, Oppenheimer and Barbie led with the most nominations, each earning four, and Barbra Streisand received the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to her by fellow funny girl Jennifer Aniston and surprise guest Bradley Cooper. Among the show’s all-star presenters, viewers witnessed a groundbreaking Devil Wears Prada reunion with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt.

Here’s the full list of this year’s winners. (Next post)
