by ponchi101 Good to see Ons and Mirra are first on court. I could to see it if ESPN does not decide to show some L. American players.

by ti-amie Rain is delaying play on the outer courts.

No play before 12.30pm (local time) on the outside courts.

Looks optimistic.

by ti-amie Play has started on Laver and MCA...

by ti-amie Andreeva serves Ons a bagel in a 17m first set...

by ashkor87 Pathetic performance by Jabeur....not able to even win a game.Andreeva playing well though

by ti-amie Woz seems to be falling out of the zone as Timofeeva has gotten things back on serve in the second set.

by ptmcmahon I almost picked Woz in SP, but pictured it being close to time for her to hit a wall.

Andreeva's sandblasting of Jabeur will overshadow Timofeeva's win, but she played really well to get back into it. Big fighter. Played gutsy at the end.

by ti-amie I caught the very end of Ons match. No footwork. No energy. She tried a drop shot that landed well before the net. It wasn't pretty.

It was sad. Andreeva just said in the ESPN studio that her plan was to try to win 6, 7 games and then see what happens. Said she wanted to play aggressive from the beginning to take away Jabeur's time to do all of her tricks.

by ashkor87 Alycia Parks playing like an amateur..not good .I was hoping for better ..

The last few games, Ons tried a number of failed drop shots. Nothing was working.

by ponchi101 A 0-2 score against a player like Ons means that SHE was off, not that Andreeva was on fire. For Ons to be playing well and Andreeva hand her that score, it would mean that Andreeva was playing at GOAT level.

She has suddenly woken up now...won the first set with some unbelievable serving and big shotmaking .

by ashkor87 But Parks certainly has a lot of maturing to do! Shot selection...

Some of the worst in the game right now

by JTContinental Good enough to take out Fernandez in straight sets though

by nelslus Well, sheesh, y'all.

IN any case- Alycia provided a serving Master Class today during the second set- first and second serves. Great job with not crumbling in that first set.

by Fastbackss The scoreline in this Gauff match will be misleading.

Gauff was up a break in the first (twice if I recall) and then had to break Dolehide serving for the first set to send to a tiebreak (which coco easily won).

But as they say - sometimes it's just advance and move on, regardless of how pretty.

Ps - andreeva and timofeeva had good odds before the match. Looking at both and the scaredy cat makes no moolah

Pure raw power! I still think she will win Wimbledon some day...not necessarily this year

That's a big call

by ashkor87 Meanwhile Anisimova rolls smoothly along ..may go far this year, fresh...

by JTContinental Judging from this one match only, I do not see how Hugo Gaston is a professional tennis player.

by ashkor87 BHM looking impressive too. I feel she is going to do something big this year.. great all-round game, good volleyer, no real weakness..
is she a contender even here?

Her draw is good here. Maybe grass, too. She won a Wimbledon tuneup a couple years ago, I think.

Why one should never judge any player based on one match.

You should have seen Gaston make the 4R as a wildcard at Roland Garros in 2020. He beat Wawrinka (6-0 in the fifth) and Nishioka. Then, after Thiem handedly took the first two sets- Thiem then only won the match at 6-3 in the fifth. AND, let's all recall that there was a time not that long ago that this would have been considered to be a huge achievement vs. Thiem at Roland Garros. John and I have always remembered Gatson from this match- because he was a ton of fun to watch.

I remember Gaston made some wild run at the French at some point. It was Covid RG? That's definitely a quality match against team in 2020. He had just won the US Open.

by nelslus ....BTW, perhaps it will come to pass that my pick of Pavlyuchenkova for today was not a wise one. And, that my starting a Badosa is Washed Up Thread will be stalled for at least a few more days.... :gorgeous:

by ashkor87 Sabalenka very impressive today, against a good player...looking like a champion...

by ashkor87 Well I did see the match, and there is no doubt Jabeur was a pale shadow of herself ..maybe 50% of her peak ability ..

by Suliso Tiafoe's prime didn't last very long, did it?

by JTContinental Garcia quietly bows out. She must be very frustrating to coach.

I read this as "watch" at first before realizing it said "coach."

I consulted with the judges, and they agree both are accurate

by Suliso Djokovic play doesn't convince this week as much as it usually does. We'll see if it means anything or as sometimes nothing at all.

Like a lot of players, and people in general, he had his Annus Mirabilis and then seems to have gone back to his regular level indeed.
But we have to give him some time. Maybe it is a slump, maybe it is true regression to the mean.

by ti-amie Caroline Garcia out in straight sets to Magdalena Frech 6-4, 7-6(2)
