by martini4me Yastremska ran off the first four games against Navarro, won the first set 6-2, but was broken to open the second.
Yastremska is ultra-aggressive on service returns, just pounding the ball back.

Let's see if Navarro can pull a Andreeva and rally from 1-5 down.

Nope.

Who had Yastremska making the second week?

by ashkor87 Yastremska has long been known to be a very hard-hitting player .I am not surprised at anything she does...

by ashkor87 What accounts for Vika's awesome record against Ostapenko? Defence?
At least today, Osta unable to deal with Vika's serve? Of course we know Vika is so great at punishing weak second serves..Osta certainly qualifies...

Petkovic asked Azarenka this after the match. She said she doesn't really enjoy playing her but loves a challenge and commits to fighting hard, yada yada. Then she asked for the mic back to say that she accepts that you can't win Slams without facing pressure, and that she talks to her son about using sports to learn to embrace challenge and stay positive.

by Suliso So we have Paolini, Kalinskaya, Dodin and Zheng for a place in SF's. Qinwen must be loving this one.

by ashkor87
meganfernandez wrote: Sat Jan 20, 2024 7:06 am yada yada

by Suliso You guys were right about Swiatek not being in a Slam winning form right now.

I suppose Sabalenka is a big favorite now. Or maybe Gauff?

by JTContinental This is the most bizarre R16 lineup I can think of in recent memory

by ashkor87 That was a shocker! Still can't believe it! Noskova is very young, so great to see!

Yes, true. But Sabalenka and Coco will restore order, I expect

by ashkor87 Now we should expect Svitolina and QZ to emerge from the top half, along with Saba and Coco in the bottom half ..that would not be bizarre, on the whole..?

by JTContinental Alex Michelsen to Carrot Top transformation 50% complete

I suppose, but would you bet any money on that? Also why Svitolina over Azarenka?

by ashkor87
Suliso wrote: Sat Jan 20, 2024 12:39 pm Also why Svitolina over Azarenka?
good question.. yes, Vika could be there instead of Svitolina..50-50,, Svitolina played really well in Auckland, Vika is a two-time champion.

I think Sabalenka - she was my pick from
the start - but Gauff might have her number mentally. I’m very curious to see if Anisimova can beat Sabalenka, too.

I’m out counting out Svitolina! But I think it’s Sabalenka’s to lose.

by ashkor87 I am still betting on Coco to win the title
Logic is- Coco best Saba at the USO, conditions here are a bit faster, should suit Coco better..so why can't she do it again,,,?! To say that two in a row is not possible, I consider to be mere superstition..

by Suliso It is possible, it just doesn't happen very often.

by ponchi101 We keep making the same mistake.
Rybakina was out in R2. Iga in R3. Why keep assuming that any of the top seeds is truly that much better than the field? That they are locked in for a title?
The parity is extreme. If Aryna wins, sure, why not? Coco? The same. But if they lose in the next round, by now we should not be surprised one bit.

It can happen again if Coco has a mental edge on Sabalenka. I’d put it at 60/40 for Coco if they play. But Sabalenka has good memories from this court, obviously plays well on it, will learn from the US Open loss, etc. She is a competitor and a champion - I’d expect her to rise to the occasion. And she should have won in New York. She is just better than Coco, IMO, if she handles the pressure,

I never thought either of them was going to win. ;) Rybakina is inconsistent, Iga is beatable off clay and hasn’t been in her fiercest form this month.

I won’t be shocked if Sabalenka loses to Anisimova or a nothing-to-lose Andreeva if Sabalenka caves to the pressure. But those two are more consistent t right now. Wasn't Iga
/ FH going odd vs Noskova?

Tennis is not a random game like golf..the better player usually wins ..on this forum, at least, we are merely saying who the better player is....

by ti-amie The top half of the WTA draw has fallen apart hasn't it?

Collins should've finished Iga off in R2. I didn't watch last night's match but I'm not surprised Iga lost. The expression on her face during the on court presser showed that she knew she got past Collins by the skin of her teeth.

I don't pick Timofeeva to win but I wouldn't be surprised if she causes more chaos before she leaves the stage.

I would love Svitolina to make it to the Final but if past performance is any guideline...

Sabalenka will be out for blood if she faces Gauff in the Final semifinal.

Qinwen barely escaped Wang Yafan.

As has been said what a bizarre round of 16.

Sorry. Will correct.

by Fastbackss Sabalenka has looked dialed in this tournament.

My hot take - her match against Anisimova will be closer than that against Gauff

It could be. Anisimova has beaten her here before and Sabalenka could start feeling the pressure of being the title favorite now. But I think she is quite a bit beyond choking, usually. I expect Sabalenka to win in two sets, one of them close.

Penko taking a page from Ana Ivanovic.

by ponchi101 Amanda likes power. And she can dish it too.
I say it will be close, and maybe Amanda is not playing with any pressure on. She was so far out of the tour just a while back, that she may be loose for the match. Which was one of her recent problems.
