by ashkor87 Now the doubles matches are looking very interesting too! Singles I am looking forward to - Rublev vs DeMinaur, Krejcikova vs Andreeva and Sabalenka Anisimova..
We will find out if DeMinaur is really that good...Rublev has been playing well..

by ti-amie Gauff over Frech 6-1 first set in 26 minutes.

by Fastbackss At this rate ESPN will have very little coverage of Gauff when they come on the air

by ashkor87 Coco's forehand still tends to fall short, she is trying to compensate by giving it a higher trajectory...working ok but I wonder if a good volleyer might eat it up...Frech isn't capable of making her pay for it but someone else might be..

I think they were hoping this match would go quickly because of who is scheduled next.

Anyway Gauff is up 4-2 second set.

by jazzyg Maybe de Minaur will beat Rublev tonight, but there's no question which one is the better player, and it ain't de Minaur.

Rublev gets too much criticism for his oh-fer slam quarterfinal record. Almost all of those losses were to elite guys. He gave Djokovic a heck of a battle at Wimbledon last year, and the weather was so miserably hot when he played Medvedev at the U.S. Open, it was virtually impossible to play tennis.

De Minaur is playing better than he ever has, but Rublev's weight of shot should make the difference. The problem for him is if he gets by de Minaur, he will have to face the the hottest player on tour in Sinner in his bid to reach his first semifinal. He would be the sizable underdog again.

by ti-amie This is the first time since 2021 that Djokovic is playing a day match before the Final according to people who know more about these things than I do.

You think they can't wait to get to Mannarino? :) I would have thought Gauff would be their biggest draw all tournament in the US.

by ti-amie Gauff through 6-1, 6-2.

It seems higher even in this match versus earlier in the tourney.

Anyway - ESPN got 19 minutes.

Anisimova asked for the roof to be closed. The tournament official and I believe Jill Craybas, said there didn't seem to be any heavier rain coming so they would wait it out and then dry off the court. And here we are. It's pouring.

by ashkor87 Yes, Anisimova found it funny .she has a cute smile. .

Novak Djokovic vs. Adrian Mannarino underway.

That's the first time the 10-time champ plays during the day session at the #AusOpen since facing Frances Tiafoe in the 2nd round of the 2021 edition. Since them played 15 consecutive night matches here.

And it's played... indoors.

by ashkor87 Sabalenka very impressive today against Anisimova, who is not playing badly ..

by ti-amie I switched to Kostyuk vs Timofeeva. Kostyuk is up 3-1, 40-0 first set.

by skatingfan Novak's already bagelled Manarino in the first set.

by ti-amie Sabalenka 6-3, 5-2 and serving for the match vs Anisimova.

by jazzyg That Djokovic-Mannarino match was for you, ponch, even though you would not have wanted to watch it. It was in some ways a validation of your opinion about Mannarino's game.

by ashkor87 I really wonder about these bagel sets ..too many of them not to mean something...but what? I can see why they would happen at IW or Miami but here? Is Mannarino so outmatched ? Or sabalenka's many victims?

by JTContinental Mannarino played 3 5-set matches already, so probably didn't have much left in the tank

by JTContinental There's something poignant to be said about the crowd boogeying down to Miami Sound Machine's mid-80's classic "Conga" while a player is being treated on court for an injury, but I don't know what it is.

by ashkor87 Wild errors now from Tsitsi's backand..happens when he gets tired and/or under pressure..

by skatingfan I'm not surprised that Tsitsipas lost, just that it was Fritz who beat him.

Fritz's goal is now to win more games than Mannarino. :gorgeous:

by ashkor87 Krejcikova playing like a champion now! Subtle changes

by Suliso Rublev has reached 9 (!!!) GS QF's and lost them all. That must be some kind of record. Sinner will be in his 6th, also only won once so far but I do like his chances this time.

And in those 9 matches Rublev has only won 3 sets - 2 of them against Cilic at the French Open two years ago when Cilic won in a fifth set tie-break.

by Suliso Rublev vs Sinner is now set. I certainly favor Jannik in this one. H2H is 4-2 with Sinner winning both matches last year.

You might be right about that. That's a lot of QF losses without ever getting to a semi, I'm afraid it's probably going to be 0-10. I don't see Rublev winning this match against Sinner.

by ponchi101 I will say it forever. He is a great striker of the ball, because he hits every single shot the same.
You have seen one Rublev point, you have seen them all. And at this level, that is lethal.

by mick1303 Interestingly that Rublev has more QF appearances than Medvedev (8 before AO started).
But out of his 8 QFs Medvedev went to the semis 7 times...
3 times out of those 7 it was at the expense of AR

by ti-amie Rublev was having amazing dialogues with himself in the parts of the match I saw. He's getting better than Murray at that.
