by ashkor87 Pretty weak field...wonder why? It is a 500...

by Suliso Probably because lots of players want to take a break between the Middle East swing and IW/Miami.

by ponchi101 It has been that way for a few years now. It makes no sense for so many top players to skip it; you could start our N. American spring swing there, and get to IW quickly and already with no jet lag.

by Suliso Yes, but perhaps you also want to go home before jetting off to North America. Hardly any players are based in California.

Yes, but Indian Wells is next, which IS in California (well, sort of, anyway)...

by ashkor87 it is a weak field anyway, and on top of that, it is not clear to me that Pegula, Muchova etc will actually play, through they are entered.. and even if they play, how well they will play..Pavly has pulled out of Dubai already, and BHM has been posting some poor results, so very murky, the whole thing..

by Suliso The field is weak indeed, but still some interesting players further down (Fernandez and Kostyuk in particular)

by patrick Muchova probably has w/d already. No official notification yet. She showed that she had surgery on her wrist via Reddit.

i can't keep up with her injuries anymore. I'm more suprrised when she plays for a few months than when she doesn't.

Yes, you are right.. took French citizenship in 23

by Togtdyalttai I'm going to the final of this tournament. Kinda sad there aren't more top players, but I'm looking forward to it anyway.

by ashkor87 Pegula seems to be back, fit and well.. the court is a bit on the slow side, though, which doesnt usually suit her much..does suit Pavlyuchenkova .. Yastremska did well at the AO, which was faster, but she is a very powerful player, may find this court conducive..
of course, slower courts are coming - at IW and Miami..

by ashkor87 Boulter has been a revelation ..and Navarro blasting through the draw like it is a college event...

by ponchi101 On the other hand.
BHM can't win a match to save her soul. Those wheels have fallen off completely. I put her back on my Around the World team because I felt that spin could not last forever.

by ti-amie It's apparently pouring rain in San Diego and they haven't even posted a tentative OoP for today SMH

by ti-amie The Doubles semis will feature

USA N. MELICHAR-MARTINEZ/AUS E. PEREZ (3) vs AUS S. HUNTER/CZE K. SINIAKOVA (2)

by ti-amie The singles semis will feature

J. PEGULA (1) vs UKR M. KOSTYUK (6)

USA E. NAVARRO (3) vs GBR K. BOULTER

by ashkor87 Boulter is very impressive- what accounts for this tremendous improvement? Never thought of her as a force, here she is rolling through the field like a major champion.. doesnt seem to come forward to volley much, tremendous depth and pace on both flanks..

by ashkor87 Kostyuk beating Pegula on a slowish court..not a surprise..

by ashkor87 Kostyuk is a player of high class..don't know enough about Boulter..Kostyuk should win this one

by ponchi101 Boulter is just having her week; you know, every WTA player gets to play really well one week of the year, and then we have something to talk about for a few days.
Flavor of the week sort of thing. She has been around long enough to know that this is not like she all of the sudden found 5th gear.

by ashkor87 Yes ..Gilbert says something like this: some days you will play so well, nobody can beat you, some days you will play so badly you cant beat anybody..it is what you do the rest of the days that makes you a champion, or not!

by Suliso Agree, but Djokovic or Federer in their primes never really played so badly that anyone could beat them. Maybe one could hand pick some examples, but it really would have been only a few over a decade or more.

by ponchi101 I would say the great ones have like limits. One really surprising loss every year. Two or three that make you wonder. And the others are to fellow really good players.
Has Boulter really beaten a really good player this week? No, there were none in the draw. Change Boulter for any of the other 16 players on her side of the draw and we could be saying the same, maybe with the exception of BHM because she was the #2 seed.

by ashkor87 Well, well, Boulter continues in the zone. I like her game, good pace and depth, not much volley though
