by JTContinental Venus and Caro have both received wild cards

by ashkor87 very strong fields, as usual... of course, the sloooow court won't suit everyone.. Sinner, Medvedev, Coco, Pegula etc. will find it tough.. it is the slowest hard court on the tour.. presumably engineered by Ellison to help his buddy Nadal.

by ti-amie The 2024 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells will kick off with the qualifying stages on Sunday 3 March with the main draw action commencing on Wednesday 6 March. The tournament will come to a close on Sunday 17 March when both the men's and women's singles finals will take place.

by ti-amie Emma Raducanu, Paula Badosa Headline Full List of 2024 Wild Cards
March 1, 2024

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., March 1, 2024 – 2021 US Open Champion Emma Raducanu headlines the list of players awarded main draw wild cards into the 2024 BNP Paribas Open, a combined ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 event to be held March 3-17 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The 22-year old Raducanu heads to Tennis Paradise looking to jumpstart her 2024 season after a career-best showing in Indian Wells last March, reaching the Round of 16. Joining her will be former World No. 1 and two-time Grand Slam finalist Karolina Pliskova, along with 2021 BNP Paribas Open Champion Paula Badosa. Twenty-two-year-old American Amanda Anisimova, who reached the fourth round in Melbourne earlier this year in her return to Tour after seven months away from the game, was also awarded entry into the main draw, along with Americans Ashlyn Krueger and McCartney Kessler.

Former World No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam Singles Champion Venus Williams was previously received a main draw wild card, as was Caroline Wozniacki, the 2018 Australian Open and 2011 BNP Paribas Open Champion. Both players will be returning to the desert for the first time since 2019.

Twenty-two-year-old Brandon Nakashima, who won both his inaugural title at his hometown San Diego Open and the Next Gen ATP Finals crown in 2022, was awarded a main draw wild card, alongside former World No. 9 Fabio Fognini, who is a nine-time ATP Tour Singles Champion. 2024 Qatar Open finalist Jakub Mensik of the Czech Republic, three-time ATP Challenger Tour winner Patrick Kypson and former University of Illinois All-American Aleksander Kovacevic are also on the list of ATP main draw wild card recipients.

Wild cards into the BNP Paribas Open men’s qualifying draw were awarded to former World No. 10 and five-time ATP Tour champion Lucas Pouille; Southern California native and former University of Southern California Trojan Steve Johnson; 22-year-old Stefan Dostanic, the winner of the 2023 USTA Southern California “Race to Indian Wells;” 2023 NCAA Men’s Singles Champion Ethan Quinn; and 17-year-old Cooper Woestendick, the winner of last year’s inaugural FILA International Junior Championships in Indian Wells and the 2024 Australian Open Boys’ Doubles Champion.

An all-American roster of BNP Paribas Open women’s qualifying wild cards includes 2022 Wimbledon Girls’ Singles champion Liv Hovde; 2021 US Open Girls’ Singles and Doubles Champion Robin Montgomery; 2024 Australian Open Girls’ Doubles Champion Iva Jovic; former University of California All-American and 2023 USTA Southern California “Race to Indian Wells” winner Haley Giavara; three-time Junior Grand Slam Champion Clervie Ngounoue; and New York native Christasha McNeil, a member of BNP Paribas’s Mac 1 Team.

The 2024 BNP Paribas Open begins on Sunday, March 3 with WTA qualifying play. Main draw play will commence on Wednesday, March 6 and the tournament will conclude on Sunday, March 17 with the men’s and women’s singles finals.

by ashkor87 some really unfortunate matchups early:
Murray vs Rublev in round 2
Jabeur vs Mirra A in round 2
Swiatek vs Collins in round 2 (the poor thing has arthritis, cant she get a break?!)
Boulter vs Giorgi (as tough as they come, on a slow court..) in round 1

by jazzyg To get to Rublev, Murray would have to win a match, which has proven very difficult for him this year.

I see multiple Tennis.com predictors have Rublev as the most likely high seed to lose early. I guess they think he will have a hangover from his default in the last tournament or they think Murray will beat him.

Jabeur-Andreeva is an Aus Open rematch, which Andreeva won
Swiatek-Noskova R3 would be a rematch from Aussie, too, which Noskova won.
Boulter has to get through Giorgi, Noskova and Swiatck just to reach the 4th round - very tough

by ponchi101 And why would we think Boulter would reach the 4th round?

ponchi101 wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2024 11:42 pm And why would we think Boulter would reach the 4th round?
Because she just won San Diego?

Maybe 4th round is a bit far but not necessarily for someone who is currently hot

by patrick Boulter wins 2 matches at best in IW

jazzyg wrote: Tue Mar 05, 2024 7:48 pm To get to Rublev, Murray would have to win a match, which has proven very difficult for him this year.

I see multiple Tennis.com predictors have Rublev as the most likely high seed to lose early. I guess they think he will have a hangover from his default in the last tournament or they think Murray will beat him.
I would say, in fact, Rublev will do rather well..it is more likely Medvedev who will exit early..he really haaaates this court, remember his rant last year ! (Which I totally sympathized with)

I doubt she will with that draw. might have with a different draw given her current form.

by ponchi101 If the post with the PENN ball is for real (meaning the picture), and that was only after a few minutes of warming up, that will be impossible to play with.

by ashkor87 well, this isnt a major but it is the most major of the non-majors.. so
Probabilities (to win the whole thing)
Men:
Djokovic 50%
Zverev 25%
Alcaraz 15% - hasnt been playing well in the first few months of the year
Sinner 5 %
Rest (including Nadal) 5%

Women:
Swiatek, Sabalenka and Rybakina 30% each
The field 10% (including QZ, Coco, Mirra Andreeva, Samsonova)
If any rank outsider, I would bet on Mirra Andreeva, did very well in Australia even where conditions were not very favorable, she can do better here, and young people improve with every match...

by ponchi101 I don't see any upsets either.
But I don't see Novak at 50%. Nor Sinner at 5%. I give Novak a 30% (he has not played in a while) and Sinner likes a hard court. 30% too.

by dave g I'm agreeing with Ponchi on Djokovic and Sinner.

I can see the merit of what you are saying .
It is just that I see Sinner as being better on fast courts ..I had fully expected him to win the AO..if he can win this too, he would be in the class of Djokovic, which I don't think he is, yet

Giorgi's matches seem to hinge on her moods. The "you're not going to beat me" version showed up today. Also Boulter won San Diego and I don't think she's used to the short turnaround.

Parity?! She was beaten by a better player, who would always beat her on a slow court...I don't see where the parity is.

by ponchi101 Where is the parity? Jessica Pegula loses to Martha Kostyuk, who loses to Kathy Boulter, who loses to Camila Giorgi. In the span of four matches.

Right... any losses are pretty normal. She has overachieved so far. SHe has a bright future, most likely, but you never know. Lots of circumstances could prevent the obvious success from happening.

by ashkor87 I hear Alcaraz did not appear to be fit, in his exhibition with Nadal ..won't expect much from him here...

by ashkor87 I think people over-rate Pegula and under-rate Kostyuk and Giorgi..Kostyuk was always considered a future champion..Pegula is Pegula, totally reliable against lesser players and not able to beat the really good players (without help from the weather and the scheduling, as at the Rogers)

by skatingfan Raonic ends up playing Nagal rather than Nadal - what a difference just one letter can make.

by ashkor87 some interesting matchups: Caro vs Vekic.. both are really better on fast courts, neither will ike these courts, but I think Vekic has a bit more power?may do better.. Kerber vs Osta would be a classic, if it werent for the fact that Kerber has been away and is probably only 80%.. I would definitely expect Ostapenko to win this - Kerber has a great service return but it is different in kind from Vika's.. Osta can be beaten by someone who really punishes her second serve lollipop, but dont see Kerber as capable of doing that..
Giorgi - Noskova,I really dont know what to expect, I havent seen enough of Noskova- she is young, probably nobody has.. I am still looking for Michelsen to beat Paul - both are volleyers, but Mickelsen is more of a natural aggressor, that should work better than hanging about at the baselne.

Love this analysis. Keep it coming!

Andy Roddick talked about the court speed and its effects on IW on his podcast this week. Thinks Medvedev doesn't like the surface, despite getting to the final last year - he likes a skiddier surface. And he says the surface is tailor-made for Alcaraz.

by Suliso It might be, but I think Alcaraz is in poor form right now. Unless he rises like Phoenix from ashes I don't see it.

by ashkor87 Which means Djokovic...paraphrasing Lineker, tennis is a simple game..two guys will bash the ball back and forth for three hours, and Djokovic always wins!
For those who may not know..Lineker, a great footballer and coach, said something like ,-'football is a simple game, 22 players will run and kick the ball around for 90 minutes, and the Germans always win'

by Suliso As for Sinner perhaps the surface is not his absolute favorite, but he has started very well. 6-3, 6-0 against a respectable opponent.

Down 2-6 1-3 to Francisco Cerúndolo, Shevchenko retires. #tennis

Results from late last night after the rain delay:
Raonic beat lucky loser Sumit Nagal, 63 63;
Stephens beat Sherif, 75 63;
Wild card Patrick Kypson beat qualifier Ethan Quinn, 61 76(1);
Fognini beat Zapata Miralles, 46 62 63.

by ashkor87 As I had predicted, Alexandrova is out early. Kerber proved me wrong, she is evidently playing close to her best?

by ti-amie I didn't expect Collins to win but she was flat and played as if she were tired. She needed that day of rest in between and didn't get it due to the rain delay.

by ashkor87 Could be her arthritis too

by meganfernandez Rybakina withdrew. Yet again. Just in the last year: Stuttgart, French Open, Eastbourne, Cincinnati, Tokyo, Zhenzhou, World Tennis League, Dubai, and now Indian Wells. Nine events in less than 12 months.

by ashkor87 Looking forward to Osaka vs Samsonova...Osaka is a great champion, but is she back? At her best, nobody should beat her on this surface, except maybe Swiatek..Samsonova is very powerful, plays well on slow hardcourts..but certainly isn't 'great' like Osaka is ..

by ti-amie

You cannot be serious!
In the past, Johnny Mac went berserk over a ball that well, he thought it was in and the chair called it out.
I will not play under these conditions.
Jimmy Connors walked out of a match when umpire Jeremy Shales did not call a ball OUT, that Connors felt was so clearly out he hit a short lob of it and started walking away from the point.
And not just the bad boys. In the 1980 USO Final against Mac, Borg saw the ball land so far out that he did not strike it, he caught it with his hand.
Only for there not to be any call and he lost the point, which was the crucial break in the fifth.

I totally disagree with the removal of line judges; I believe that the best combo is a good line judge AND the electronic backup. But to say that there were no disputes in the past is a bit farfetched.

I agree with your friend. Jabeur look when she lost Wimbledon got more conversation than Vondrousova ,who dodged a "bullet" when Pegula could not close their QF match,

by ashkor87 But I liked the simplicity of the rule, because the same rules apply at the club level also...if it is not clearly out, it is in.

This is the kind of qualification I get from 2nd and 3rd graders.

by ashkor87 saw a bit of Giorgi - Noskova.. strange, edgy match, unconvincing by both.. first time I am seeing Noskova, clearly a good, promising player.. great serve and bif shots.

by meganfernandez Gauff came back from 0-4 and 2-5 in the third set vs Burel and won in a tiebreak. Good determination and athleticism.

by Suliso Yes, but it's not a good sign that she got into this situation in the first place against a fairly average opponent.

by ti-amie It was mental. When she finally won she looked at her box and pointed to her head.

by ti-amie I watched the end of Pegula vs Blinkova. I know Pegula is a bit controversial here but today she had no spark. It seemed as if she was going through the motions and was a bit formulaic.

It'll be interesting to see how she does in Miami.

I a m not, of course, surprised Pegula lost - she needs more help from the court, since she doesnt have the power to blast through it.. what suprises me is that Blinkova beat her, I didnt think Blinkova was any better suited to this court. Miami, she may do better simply because the court is slightly, marginally faster and she is used to the hot, humid conditions - but I would not expect her to actually win Miami, or even go to the semis..in general, whoever wins IW will be a spent force.. this double-header is very tough, physically - which is why only Vika has done it, in recent times..among women.

by ashkor87 Very impressive win for Osaka - I was thinking she cant get past Samsonova.. but she is evidently back to almost full-strength.. watch out everybody! She has more major titles than anyone but Venus (and equal to Iga)

I'd put my money on Osaka.

by meganfernandez Navarro toughed out a close match vs Tsurenko. Emma's movement was incredible again. I noticed it in Hobart, where she won the title. She extended some points at the end that were insane. I feel like she needs to create more in the rallies to take another step forward.

by nelslus ....AND Stearns blew at least 4 match points against Sabalenka. Served for the match in the third set at 5-4, 40-0. Blew that, had at least one more match point- blew that. Broke Sabalenka for another shot at serving out the match. Didn't do it. (Missed the tennis at that point). VERY ironically, Stearns saved three match points in the the third set tiebreaker. Only to play two bad points to lose the match.

Yup. Navarro was down a break in that third set. AND- agreed- Navarro is going to have to learn to be more aggressive and proactive, if she wants progress, and to truly be any kind of contender. (Not that this will happen, of course.) :gorgeous: :gorgeous:

This is what I get for going to bed early in third set.

These type of matches tend to either temporarily galvanize or break a player.

Osaka has to get past Mertens first, and you just never know with her. She can be a tough out, even still.

I think Pegula hits a lot harder than Mertens. Mertens's weapons are consistency, court sense, athleticism, intangibles - plus a great backhand. I think those things can trouble an off-peak Osaka. Mertens can open the court, and she can volley.

I'd put my money on Osaka.

I might in a few months, but Osaka hasn't beat anyone good yet in her return, plus Coco is 2-0 against her.
Their record is 2-2. (Including that 2019 US Open match where a gracious Naomi encouraged Coco to speak to the crowd after Coco's 3 & 0 loss.)

Oops, the bootleg site I used only showed the 2 Coco wins.

by ashkor87 Well, Osaka clearly isn't fully back yet..we should not have expected it...
Kerber's come-back has been impressive too, beating good players I really expected her to lose too. The court doesn't even suit her much .

by Owendonovan I wonder if Sakkara's delts are one of those genetic physical anomalies that run in her family. I know lifting is a big part of her fitness, but those delts are big for any athlete.

by Fastbackss Djokovic loses first set.
Up break early in 2nd. Tough service game. Break point - djokovic hits serve. Nardi thinks it's out - just reaches at it. Doesn't really move but return goes in. He then starts moving. Djokovic stopped. Wanted a hindrance. Didn't get it.
Nardi quickly held.
Curious to see what happens and if Novak can settle down. He is on edge of tilt

by Fastbackss Yeah he's channeled his anger well since then...

by Fastbackss Okay, about that third set...

Really at the end of the 2nd Nardi started amping up the pace.

In the last game, Nardi was clearly nervous. But Djokovic let him off the hook with 2 UFEs. Bad ones. That was shocking. I think it helped Nardi relax and serve it out.

I'm missing something.
Isn't this one of the tournaments with fully electronic line calling? So, if you don't hear the OUT call, you should keep playing, and not stop and call for a hindrance because your opponent was also confused.
Right?

And, BTW.
Losing to Sinner at the Aussie. Well, that was bound to happen sooner later. But losing now to a LL at a tournament that favors you so much...
Can it be the start of the end? (I know, watch him now clean Miam i and the next three slams, but one can dream, no?)

by ashkor87 Zverev vs DeMinaur is a good test case. If speed of court matters, Zverev should win.

I just think of what Federer said during his last years - most days you can play like you did at 30, but you start to have more and more frequent days where you just can't muster that level of play.

Djokovic hasn't been passed the 4th round at either Indian Wells, or Miami since he did the Sunshine Double for the 3rd time in a row in 2016. His best Masters events are Rome, Cincinnati, and Paris over the past few years.

by ashkor87 a meditation on sloow courts - is it possible that slow courts are a great equalizer - that is, even not-so-talented players can reach any ball, have the time to set up and hit any ball.. after all, what distinguishes great players like Djokovic and Federer is that they never seem hurried, they always have time to hit their shots .. such is their vision, reflexes, footwork.. here, at IW, even Nardi is able to keep up with Djokovic, and Djokovic anyway doesnt have the brute power like Nadal has, to push someone off the court..
so upsets like this are to be expected?

by Suliso It could also be that Nardi (20) is ranked way below his actual ability and Djokovic is finally starting to show some cracks.

If slower courts were such an equalizer anyone could upset the former big 3 on clay and it certainly was not true.

It's an interesting thought... but it also might overestimate how slow these courts really are. They are slow for hard. But I'm not sure they're clay-slow.

I think Nardi played great and Djokovic was slightly below his level. Sometimes people lose tennis matches. That's all, IMO. ;) Djokovic made two sloppy errors in the last game, when Nardi was clearly nervous. Nardi opened the game with a double fault, and on the second point, he chose to hit a rally ball as a slice forehand, off-balance, rather than step in and drive it, like normal. Djokovic returned that very easy ball into the net, then missed the next ball wide. He wasn't as sharp as usual.

by ashkor87 true, but clay is anyway different - the movement, the balance, the spin.. the IW and Miami hard courts are the slowest hard courts, not the slowest courts per se.
I had posted these earlier, but anyway, he speeds of different courts were rated as follows (not all that recent, I agree)
Shanghai 42.9
Turin 42.1
AO 42
Paris (Cergy) 37.5
Canadian (not sure Toronto or Montreal?) 36.3
USO 35.4
Cinci 33.6
Miami 30.3
IW 27.4

Monte Carlo 24.9
Rome 22
Roland Garros 21
Madrid 20.9

that accords reasonably well with what our eyes tell us.

by Suliso Madrid is slower than MC? Usually players who don't like clay that much do better there than elsewhere.

I don't think so, and I don't know how she got a set of Sabalenka, unless Sab played terribly. Emma did one better than Stearns.

by nelslus Navarro played with MUCH more initiative today- more aggression, more winners from solid ground strokes. (I watched from the end of the first set on.) Obviously, Sabalenka's ill-timed errors helped. But, 'twas an excellent job from Emma. (AND, no, Navarro and Stearns ain't gonna match Sabalenka for power, shot after shot. But- Sabalenka's winners also- you know- have to go in.)

by Suliso I think it's at least 50% Sabalenka in both cases. As for Stearns she should have beaten Aryna (had multiple match points), but choked at the last moment.

by nelslus AND- watched most of the third set- Monfils just got worn out. (SHOCKING, I know).

I can definitely confirm that Stearns choked. For once in her career- Sabalenka played don't-hit-an-error to save the match points.

Same on all of it. I'm still not 100% sold on her game. It lacks teeth and dimension to me. But she's strong mentally, has great movement, and is good enough in everything else. Still a lot of room for improvement.

If she won a tournament, she's doing well to go on a tear in terms of physicality. Timofeeva mentioned that she hit a wall physically (and emotionally) when she got to the 4th round of the Aussie after qualifying. It will be interesting to see if Yuan has much energy vs vs Gauff.

by martini4me This is another player that's shot from obscurity to relevance very suddenly. She's already 25 years old (born September 1998), she finished 2021 at 312 (had peaked at 198--from her playing history, she may have had some injuries that year--there were a couple of stretches when she didn't play for two or four months). While she finished 2022 at 74 (had a good fall run: qualified and made the third round at US Open (lost to Pegula, then made three ITF finals (winning one) in the US)), she fell back outside the top 100 until last August.

Then she got hot again in the fall, this time in Asia. She got to the final of the WTA 500 in Korea (losing to Pegula again), then to the finals of three ITF $100,000, winning one of those. This year, she qualified and reached the semis in Auckland (WTA 250), losing to Navarro. She lost in the first round of her next two tournaments (Boulter at Australian Open) and lost in qualifying in another, then rebounded to win the Austin 250, and now four wins in Indian Wells.

All the players have the ability to go on a run like this for a little bit. But a lot of things have to line up, and the player has to be dedicated, believe, and work very, very hard. Maybe get lucky.

by Suliso Another dominant performance by Sinner. Now on a 19 match win streak including 16 this year. Only Djokovic and Nadal have had better starts to their seasons since 1990 establishment of ATP tour.

Will we get now Sinner vs Alcaraz most fans would probably prefer? Or will Zverev beat Carlos yet again (h2h is 5-3 in his favor)?

The surface is great for Alcaraz, if he's in top shape. As you said, though, Zverev matches up well against him. Won in Australia. We'd all rather see Sinner-Alcaraz, though.

Maybe they should just clap more?!

by meganfernandez Navarro's run comes to an end. Shame, this was a winnable match vs Sakkari. The wind was awful, but Emma also let up on the aggression in the second set. And made a few too many errors. David Witt already paying off with Sakkari.

by Suliso Very conventional results this time. No drama at all... Really looking forward to Sinner vs Alcaraz (h2h 4-4). Sinner has been playing better the last half a year, but slow hard courts favor Alcaraz.

I didn’t notice those things - too advanced for me. I noticed he kept telling her where to serve.

She was pretty aggressive. And come to think of it, was returning close in.

by Suliso Slightly surprised that Coco lost.

by ashkor87 She has been spewing ufes and dfs...can't keep doing that.

by ponchi101 Still reached the SF, and lost to a former top 10.
I know, we expect a lot out of her. But that was a good tournament, if she was playing that badly (something about wining ugly, I guess).

by Suliso 50 unforced errors I'm reading elsewhere...

by ashkor87 well, unforced errors will happen on a slow court if you run out of patience early.. I imagine that is what happened with Coco..?
I do think, from the highlights I saw, she missed many opportunities to go to the net.. that is one way to win a point when you are not able to blast your opponnt off the court, which Coco anyway cannot and not against a good defender like Sakkari anyway.. Swiatek seems to have learned how to pound the ball until she gets an opening and only then moves in for the kill..

by ashkor87 AI says 54 % chance for Sinner, 46% Alcaraz...I would say it is exactly the opposite..certainly Sinner can win but he has less than an even chance..entirely because it is a slow court,..Tommy Paul has a decent chance of beating Medvedev - 45%,?

Sakkari has virtually no chance at all of beating Swiatek..the only question is whether there will be a bagel..I think there will be...6-3, 6-0 though I rarely try to predict scores ..

by mick1303 There is one argument in favor of Medvedev (the funny one). IW is one of the tournaments he did not win yet ))

This is why I'm not fully on the Coco wagon. You can't lose to Sakkari in a big match, sorry. Once every three years, okay. It's tennis, it happens, Sakkari is one of the best players in the world. But you don't lose with UFEs and double faults. If she plays out of her mind, then she was better that day. But champions don't suck against lesser players this much.

Sakkari has clearly been playing better with Witt. I think attitude is helping her in these tight matches.

More or less surprised than when he won Miami on a similar surface last year? :D

by ponchi101 He doesn't have the power? He is in the SF's. He can serve at 135 mph. When he crushes his (ugly) FH, he CRUSHES it.
How much more power does he need to show?

by Suliso I suppose we can cite his relatively mediocre record on clay as evidence.

Suliso wrote: Sat Mar 16, 2024 7:13 pm I suppose we can cite his relatively mediocre record on clay as evidence.
It is not 90s. If a player is top 5, he is a contender on any surface. He may be less or more dangerous depending on the surface, but the variation is 10% max.

It could be that she and Witt are in a trial period and she has to prove herself to him?

Cori making the semi's was a triumph of will. She played poorly most of the tournament and in the semi's ran into a highly motivated Sakkari.

by Suliso It's not 90-ties for sure, but I don't agree that variation is only 10% on clay or grass. Records of top players outside the most legendary players of recent times don't indicate that at all. Swiatek on grass or Osaka on clay for example.

Your Sakkari theory is interesting. It definitely has given her new motivation.

Gauff wasn't at her best this week, not even close, and that's why I'm not fully on the bandwagon yet. Her level is inconsistent for what I consider a champion.

by ponchi101 Medvedev on clay is not about power, it is about the movement. He is not as good sliding as others.
Which is also the reason he is not as good on grass. There, he is not as nimble; his movement is heavier.

by mick1303
Suliso wrote: Sat Mar 16, 2024 9:09 pm It doesn't matter which tour. I only picked these two because on ATP tour most current players haven't achieved that much yet on any surface.
IMO it does matter. The level of power and athleticism on men's tour is much-much higher. And this creates a landscape where surface specialists with a significant skew are less likely to reach such heights in the overall ranking as top 5. On WTA it is still possible though, as your examples prove.

If you remember, both Sinner and he were so tired at Miami they could barely walk. I don't consider it a real match.

by ponchi101 Some numbers for Alcaraz and Sinner:
H2H= 4-4
Sets: 12-12 (50/50)

Total games: 114-129 (Alc-SIn) (47/53)

by ponchi101 Medvedev has to re-think his temper tantrums. They truly do not benefit him. He is not early McEnroe, who elevated his level when he got angry (later Mac lost that ability). In Daniil's case, every time he gets it going with the crowd, he loses the match.
