by ashkor87 Jabeur has won this in the past, doubt she is playing that well these days, though..
green clay is a tricky surface, neither clay nor hardcourt.. only Americans have any experience playing on it, so maybe someone like Navarro (or Anisimova?) can do well here..Pegula and Keys too, of course. I would be interested to see whether Krejcikova can do well..her game suits this surface ..
in any case, I would not read much into the results here, as a pointer to the red clay season.. it is more of a transition tournament.

by meganfernandez kudermetova is a former champ. Keys has won it, I believe. Stephens?

by ashkor87 Yes, I think Keys has won it about 5 years ago . Her game is really well suited to clay, better than to grass in my opinion (though most people would say the opposite) - she is powerful but not really quick on her feet..which is why she has done well on clay. .certainly can win this one.

by ashkor87 Sloane has won it too but long ago. I am a bit surprised at Sloane doing well on clay..her foot speed, ability to redirect shots and great defence, should have her do better on faster surfaces .I was not at all surprised when she beat Keys at the USO .here, yes, she could win but I would give Keys a better shot ...

by ponchi101 Har tru is another sliding surface. You can slide just as on clay.
I played a lot on it. Transitioning from har tru to red clay is just a matter of how slow the people wanted to make the har tru; it can change a lot depending on how many layers they put.
About Sloane. Remember she is a a F.O. finalist. She must know something about the surface.

by ashkor87 Yes, I thought sloane should have won that one ..she became passive when she got the lead..which is her failing all her career...not pressing home her advantage. But her run to the finals was surprising, she has never done anything on clay before or since .Keys has consistently done well..

I bet Charleston gives nice appearance fees. Danielle went to Virginia, as did Emma. Wonder if she has a good relationship with the Navarros. She could get a Wed start if she has a first-round bye. At least Tuesday. That’s three days. I bet she plays.

TT lived up to my high estimation of her. Alexandrova is very good, but not on clay...

by ashkor87 Fernandez vs Stephens is a nice match-up. On clay, Leylah should win .SS has done well at RG in the past but these days, I don't think she can beat Leylah...on this surface, volleying is very effective, Sloane can volley but doesn't,often enough..

by ponchi101 ANYBODY can beat Leylah. It is not as if she can overpower you, or she is loaded with weapons. She moves well, she is solid, being a lefty helps, but this is one those matches were 50% for both is accurate.

she is one of the most purposeful and effective volleyers in the game..and her ability to handle pace from the opponent is outstanding .. I do think that latter capability is more useful on faster surfaces but volleying will win her matches even on clay..

Looks like a player having a good week during the their career peak. 25 years old, and just playing regularly on tour in past few months since cracking the top 100 last year. I'm sure they're a very good player, but unlikely to have much of an impact in the long run.

Wins over Keys and Navarro don't mean a lot IMO. Even on their favorite surface. Both of those players should have won and had every opportunity to win. Christian outcompeted both of them fair and square, but more intense players would have won those matches.

Emma doesn't seem to have a killer instinct or an intense bone in her body. I'm not sure how competitive she is. You'd think you have to be somewhat competitive to breeze to the NCAA title and get to 20 in the world, but it wasn't there yesterday. She competed well to win a tight second set, fending off 2 match points, but I think she just concentrates more than competes.

by ashkor87 saw a bit of the Keys-Cristian match - Cristian looks like a newer lighter version of Halep - light on her feet, great footwork on clay, fearless returns. She may do well this cay season..

by meganfernandez Pegula-Azarenka was amazing. Pegula edged it 7-6 in the third for her best win of the year. She had 3 math points at love-40 on Vika's serve in the third, at 4-5, didn't convert. Then Vika had three match points at 6-3 in the breaker and another one later. Pegula played some of her best stuff down those match points. Tough loss for Vika, she played great and came back from a set and 3-1 down.

Collins still looks like the best player in the draw.

Pegula actually had a 4th match point after the love-40 lead where she had been up 5-4. It was funny how great they both played when match points down, and how tight they got when match points up. The last two points in the third set tiebreaker, Vika missed a VERY makable pass (after a couple of pretty shaky volleys from Pegula), and then Vika hit over the baseline. Nervy stuff- but, obviously, very dramatic.

by jazzyg Pegula-Azarenka was a dramatic match but mostly poorly played.

Azarenka was not good until she was down 3-1 and break points for a double break in the second set. Then Pegula was putrid for the next six games. Then they were alternately good and bad the rest of the way. Granted, the windy conditions made it hard to be consistent, but Azarenka had 12 double faults. She gets far too much attention for being tough, mainly because she emotes a lot, and far too little attention for choking, which she has done a lot over the last 10 years.

by Fastbackss Pegula another marathon match. But ran out of steam in third set tiebreak despite being up a minibreak early. Daria advances

by Fastbackss Collins out fast, up a break and 3-1.

I blame Sakkari for wearing the same kit as Pegula

by Jeff from TX I'm really happy that Collins is having a great run. Nice to see her doing so well in her final year on tour!

by ashkor87 Kasatkina beating Pegula is a good data point to show how important the surface is - I doubt this would have been the result on a faster, hardcourt..

Surface plays a role, no doubt. So how did Collins hit through Kasatkina when Pegula couldn't?

Pegula needs the court to help her win points .clay doesn't help...Collins has her own power supply, doesn't need the court's help..

Nobody has denied that surface is important.
Where I disagree with you is that your analysis is 90% based on court speed. And I just don't think that hard courts (for example), fast or slow, feel so extremely different due to speed that one player can win at one end of the spectrum but not at the other.
And I have played a lot of my tennis life on HarTru. It is different from the other surfaces, but not to the point that it is a mystery. If you can play on red clay, you can play there too.

by ashkor87 No, I have always said it is 10% max .in some cases, that is enough to make the difference...if the two players are evenly matched, it can be the differentiator. I don't think player #100 can beat Swiatek, for instance, on any surface whatever.

by ponchi101 Ah, I always get the impression that for you, it is determinant.
Then we don't disagree so much. 10%? Ok, I can live with that.

by ashkor87 Yes, there is always some selection bias- after all, we only comment on close matches, not on highly uneven matchups...
At MC, for instance, I think Wawrinka will beat DeMinaur on clay, I wouldn't say that on grass...
