Re: WTA 500 Charleston 4/1 - 4/7 2024
Pegula-Azarenka was a dramatic match but mostly poorly played.
Azarenka was not good until she was down 3-1 and break points for a double break in the second set. Then Pegula was putrid for the next six games. Then they were alternately good and bad the rest of the way. Granted, the windy conditions made it hard to be consistent, but Azarenka had 12 double faults. She gets far too much attention for being tough, mainly because she emotes a lot, and far too little attention for choking, which she has done a lot over the last 10 years.

Pegula another marathon match. But ran out of steam in third set tiebreak despite being up a minibreak early. Daria advances

Collins out fast, up a break and 3-1.
I blame Sakkari for wearing the same kit as Pegula

I'm really happy that Collins is having a great run. Nice to see her doing so well in her final year on tour!
It seems like time is going backwards towards 1984 . . .

Kasatkina beating Pegula is a good data point to show how important the surface is - I doubt this would have been the result on a faster, hardcourt..

Surface plays a role, no doubt. So how did Collins hit through Kasatkina when Pegula couldn't?

Same. I love watching her when she is this good. Glad we get to see it again. The backhand is a beauty.Jeff from TX wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 4:38 am I'm really happy that Collins is having a great run. Nice to see her doing so well in her final year on tour!

Pegula needs the court to help her win points .clay doesn't help...Collins has her own power supply, doesn't need the court's help..meganfernandez wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2024 9:41 amSurface plays a role, no doubt. So how did Collins hit through Kasatkina when Pegula couldn't?

Re: WTA 500 Charleston 4/1 - 4/7 2024
Nobody has denied that surface is important.
Where I disagree with you is that your analysis is 90% based on court speed. And I just don't think that hard courts (for example), fast or slow, feel so extremely different due to speed that one player can win at one end of the spectrum but not at the other.
And I have played a lot of my tennis life on HarTru. It is different from the other surfaces, but not to the point that it is a mystery. If you can play on red clay, you can play there too.
