I thought that Nagal would be out in straight sets too. If you get a chance to see a replay you can see he ran out of ideas before he ran out of gas in the third set. Still he got to test himself against a top player.

could it be that he is a champion on all surfaces so always took hard courts seriously too - and had just completed a hard couts swing, usually, before coming to MC - maybe a bit tired, maybe a bit unused to clay? Monte Carlo was always the first clay court event.. this year has been a different path for him, maybe it will make him more successful here! Threepeat?!
One final thought on this.
It is also that there has got to be one tournament at which he has done worse than all others. He cannot win them all evenly. There has got to be one tournament where he has done his best, and one where he has done his worse.
Simple stats.

I read he is the first Indian player to win a match on clay at a Masters event.

True but that is only because Masters events are a recent definition..Krishnan (both father and son) have won entire tournaments on clay ..

The "singles teams" acquitted themselves decently in the doubles draw.

Tsitsi vs Sinner next...the AI says Sinner has 74% chance...I would put it at 50....Tsitsi has real creds on clay, Sinner doesn't...

And Djokovic at less than 70% against Ruud..I would think it should be more than 90...wonder where the data comes from..has Ruud ever beaten Djokovic?

He doesn't yet, but still 70% sounds about right. Big difference in class and recent form.
