by ashkor87 Wawrinka vs DeMinaur..the fact that it is clay will influence the outcome .W is favorite, I would say- on a faster court, DeM would have a better than even chance...

by ponchi101 On a hard court, Stan could not stay with Deminaur. But on clay, Deminaur's speed works against him. He is so fast and relies so much on instant traction that on clay, he just can't stop sliding.

by ashkor87 Well, we shall see what happens.. my general belief is that foot speed is not a differentiator on clay or any slow surface..everyone can get to the ball, what you do with it when you get to it, matters. Wawrinka can do a lot with the ball.

by Suliso Can he still? You might be thinking of Wawrinka 5 years ago.

by ashkor87
Suliso wrote: Tue Apr 09, 2024 5:25 am Can he still? You might be thinking of Wawrinka 5 years ago.
Maybe you are right...let us see

by ashkor87 If Djokovic wins MC, he would have won every Master's title at least 3 times...mind-boggling ! There are very good players who have yet to win a Master's and even better players who have never won Any title 3 times.
Of course, highly unlikely that Djoko will win this one, but still....

by ashkor87
Suliso wrote: Tue Apr 09, 2024 5:25 am Can he still? You might be thinking of Wawrinka 5 years ago.
Ha! You were right...Wawrinka has lost a lot of his skills by now

by ashkor87 Re Djokovic et al .as they get older, what do they lose first? Having observed McEnroe carefully as he aged, I would say it is ability to return and defend ..Mac could still serve great but he couldn't put any pressure on his opponent's serve..watching to see how Djokovic plays now

by ponchi101 One issue with the footwork on clay is that you have to slide into the ball, but the end of you slide must coincide with the point of contact. That way, you stop there and you can recover.
Hard court speedsters like Deminaur slide into the ball but don't time it perfectly; they slide and the actual end of their stroke is a little bit later. That means they need extra time to recover, and end up doing so with their OUTSIDE leg, not the inside one.
Then, they dart back in the opposite direction and are easily wrongfooted.

by ashkor87 On the other hand, Sharapova said she didn't even try to slide, just picked up her feet and ran...she did ok, two French Open titles...so perhaps sliding is not a must, though it is probably the best way (I don't slide at all, myself but I don't really play on true clay, neither am I a champion!)

by ashkor87 Korda beating D Fokina so easily was quite stunning..didn't think Korda was that good,on clay. Sinner next...

by ashkor87 what accounts for Djokovic's poor performance at MC? (he has won it 'only' twice! - everything else at least three time)..
could it be that he is a champion on all surfaces so always took hard courts seriously too - and had just completed a hard couts swing, usually, before coming to MC - maybe a bit tired, maybe a bit unused to clay? Monte Carlo was always the first clay court event.. this year has been a different path for him, maybe it will make him more successful here! Threepeat?!

Could be partially that. Could be that MC is the slowest of all clay masters.

by Suliso Sinner's first match (6-1, 6-2) doesn't indicate that he's far more vulnerable on clay. Of course stronger opponents will come and then we'll see for sure.

You'd think, right? But Djokovic is 2-2 vs Rafa at MC. He has lost early to other players the last seven times he has played, after winning twice and finaling twice before 2016. Here's who he has lost to at MC in his career, in descending chronological order:
*=semi or final; others are earlier rounds

Musetti
Davidovich Fokina
Evans
Medvedev
Thiem
Goffin
Vesely
Federer* x3
Nadal* x2
Verdasco*
Ferrer

But the previous 3 years he's come into Monte Carlo having not played the sunshine double, and still lost early - 2-3 record in those 3 events.

from what I could see, the court is pretty fast, for a clay court.. even the speed ratings, though maybe not current, suggest MC is the fastest of the clay events:
speed ratings:
Monte Carlo 24.9 (IW was 27.4)
Rome 22
Roland Garros 21
Madrid 20.9 (but the altitude makes the ball fly rapidly through the air)

They know they cannot reply, or even defend themselves.
If the ATP does nothing to Medvedev, it will show their lack of a spine.

Well the ATP definitely lacks a skeletal structure.

by ashkor87 Zverev vs Tsitsipas! One would expect this to be a semifinals, shows how much Tsitsi has fallen in the rankings...looks like he is back though, so should be a good one

by ashkor87 Tsisi doing well!No surprise Medvedev lost.. very impressed with Nagal for takng a set off Rune..

by ti-amie I thought that Nagal would be out in straight sets too. If you get a chance to see a replay you can see he ran out of ideas before he ran out of gas in the third set. Still he got to test himself against a top player.

could it be that he is a champion on all surfaces so always took hard courts seriously too - and had just completed a hard couts swing, usually, before coming to MC - maybe a bit tired, maybe a bit unused to clay? Monte Carlo was always the first clay court event.. this year has been a different path for him, maybe it will make him more successful here! Threepeat?!
One final thought on this.
It is also that there has got to be one tournament at which he has done worse than all others. He cannot win them all evenly. There has got to be one tournament where he has done his best, and one where he has done his worse.
Simple stats.

I read he is the first Indian player to win a match on clay at a Masters event.

True but that is only because Masters events are a recent definition..Krishnan (both father and son) have won entire tournaments on clay ..

I knew he was upset about something but I had the sound off...

by ashkor87 Tsitsi vs Sinner next...the AI says Sinner has 74% chance...I would put it at 50....Tsitsi has real creds on clay, Sinner doesn't...

by ashkor87 And Djokovic at less than 70% against Ruud..I would think it should be more than 90...wonder where the data comes from..has Ruud ever beaten Djokovic?

He doesn't yet, but still 70% sounds about right. Big difference in class and recent form.

by ashkor87 i just checked.. Ruud hasnt even taken a set off Djokovic in 5 matches...

by ashkor87 watching MonteCarlo.. everyone seems to be wearing white except the players! Must be hot?

by ashkor87 Sinner's serve making the difference...

by ashkor87 what happened at the end there? my internet went down at 4 all in the third...

by ashkor87 I mean I know the score but how?

by ponchi101 Agree with Rune. Such a simple sign should not merit a warning. It is not as if he flipped a bird or any other truly obscene gesture.
I guess his reputation is preceding him.

by Suliso I expected Djokovic vs Sinner. Both lost. :)

by ashkor87 Wow! Ruud bt Djoko..first time in 6 tries..clearly Djoko is not his usual (past) self..that Djokovic never dropped even a set to Ruud

by skatingfan Monte Carlo has become one of the most unpredictable ATP 1000 events, and now a final between two players - Tsitsipas vs Ruud - who really needed a good result to start the clay season. Now will this be resurgence for one or both, or is this a one off. It will be interesting to look back when we get to the end of the French and see whether either player built on this result.

by ashkor87 I fully expect Tsitsi to beat Ruud now but then I fully expected Djokovic to beat Ruud - but this time, it is not old man Time who is influencing the outcome...

by ponchi101 I say Ruud will beat Tsitsipas because he is a modern model of Wilander, and can grind Stefanos on clay.
And about Old Man Time not being the one beating Novak. Sorry; I said it a few years ago. When the big three would start losing, it would be because of time, not because of somebody raising his level. That is the sole thing happening right now.

by ashkor87 I would say 75% Tsitsipas, 25% Ruud - if Sinner couldnt beat Tsitsipas, do we expect Ruud to? I dont.

I dont think Ruud can beat Tsitsipas.. and on the other point, we are not disagreeing, I may have put it badly but I am saying the same thing - that I dont think age will be a factor here between the two finalists, which it was in the semis.

apparently Sinner was affected by cramps, after which he lost the last 4 games, in a row. He even blamed it on the bad call!
I would not call this a real defeat

I was disappointed to hear Sinner say the bad call threw him off to that extent. You have to put that behind you.

Data for the mental strength conversation. He seems to have a lot of stamina up there but, if one call can throw you off, that is something you need to work on.
I remember James Blake once saying: I tennis, you need to have a long memory to remember all that has been working well, but a short memory to forget the errors (paraphrasing). That is a tough balance.

Well, you got it completely right. Not even close (the final).

Let's flip this one.
What accounts for Tsitsipas great MC record? A three time winner that has not won any other MS1000 (he has made 7 finals). Now, this one is odd. If it were random, you could say that he would win 2. But three in four years? That is a huge spike.
Something about MC really, really pleases him.

by ashkor87 Very true...there is some weak evidence that MC is the fastest of the clay courts...also possible he doesn't do much on hard courts like IW and Miami so he is always fresh..?

by ashkor87 Maybe his mother inspires him! It seems she won this event 40 years ago...don't remember all that...

by Suliso Wasn't MC actually the slowest? Or that goes to Rome?

Suliso wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 5:21 pm Wasn't MC actually the slowest? Or that goes to Rome?
I read the Rome plays the most like RG?

by jazzyg In the 1990s and early 2000s, Monte Carlo was the one they said played the most like Roland Garros. Federer never came close to beating Nadal there, just as he never did in Paris, but he was two points away from beating him in Rome in 2006, and that was in a five-set match.

The results in Rome used to sometimes favor fast-court players. Sampras cruised to the title in 1996, beating Becker in the final, and he never really threatened at Roland Garros, losing in straight sets to Kafelnikov the only time he reached the semis.

But conditions certainly could have changed since then.
