stats suggest Samsonova has a great serve but doesn't return all that well..haven't seen any matches lately so can't see for myself ..what do people here think?

Haven't seen her, so I can't say much.
How many players, ATP or WTA, have ever had a very good serve and a very good return? Very few, I would say. Martina and Mac were able to chip and charge beautifully, so I count that as a great return, and Steffi was lethal on her FH, very good on the BH.
Pete's return was underrated, I think, because everybody was in awe with Agassi's.

Nowadays Coco has a pretty good serve (except for dfs) and a great return ..Djokovic and Sinner have both, I would say ..

Federer had a very good serve and a very good return, although the return dropped off in the latter half of his career. He certainly returned Roddick's first serve better than anyone else in their first two meetings at Wimbledon, just floating it back with no pace to the baseline and taking advantage of Roddick never following the serve to the net.

She has a very standard "hit first as hard as I can, think later" type of game, which works well when it's on. She reminds me a little of Madison Keys-lite.
