by ashkor87 Only matches worth watching are Rune- Berrettini and Anisimova- Raducanu..I expect Amanda A to win that one...Ryba continues to have an easy ride, though Jovic is a very good young player

by ashkor87 If the court is truly fast, which I don't expect, Raducanu has the edge, if it is slower, say medium to fast, AA will have the edge.i do think the court and conditions generally, are not really fast, so it will be Anisimova..it is a good test. For some reason, Anisimova seems to need a fraction of a second more to hit her shots.

by jazzyg Tignor picked Jovic to beat Rybakina in his three to watch.

He has fared well so far in his predictions, but that's a heat check.

by Suliso That's a wild pick, but I've not seen Jovic play...

by JTContinental I haven't seen her yet either, but I think she did make the 3rd round of the US Open last year.

I watched both of them in their first round matches, and Anisimova looks like she is playing cleaner than Raducanu. Since both players' form fluctuates so wildly, though, it's tough to say which version will show up on court.

by ashkor87 Anisimova needs time on her forehand, takes a big swing, and the continental grip doesn't help ..hér backhand is perfect though.
She doesn't move as well as. Raducanu either

by ashkor87 Both Raducanu and AA are finding it hard to hold serve...I don't think the court is as fast as last year..server doesn't have much advantage

by ashkor87 Anisimova not willing to come forward, missing several putaways

by ashkor87 Raducanu has called for the trainer ..her serving looked off in the last game. Maybe back bothering her,?

by ashkor87 Her left leg it seems..just too bad..she was playing well

by ti-amie I expected Anisimova to play aggressively against Raducanu who took one of her traditional MTO's down 0-3 but it's Raducanu who is up 6-3, 5-4 with Anisimova serving to stay in it.

Anisimova is listless.

by ashkor87 Raducanu seems ok now..Anisimova slow and uncertain.raducanu defense frustrating AA

When she lost the 3-0 advantage Anisimova was done. I hate to say she looked disinterested so maybe she was having a bad day.

Iga up next for Raducanu.

by ashkor87 Swiatek seems to be playing well, and the court isn't fast enough to bother her.she is looking like a contender after all..she will have no trouble with Raducanu

Rybakina must have seen his post as the bakery was well stocked in the first set

Only allowed 13 points , and 3 of those were in Jovic's third and final service game of the set (where I might add she finally won a point on her first serve) that went to deuce.

Unrelated to that - impressed with Navarro's fight down the stretch. Wasn't holding in the final set and kept grinding out breaks back including a 6 minute plus game that got it back on serve

by ashkor87 Tignor! I don't think much of him as an 'expert'.

by ashkor87 I didn't see it but commentators were impressed with how bravely Rybakina kept coming forward even when she was down .something Goran wants her to ..good to see

by Suliso Is Fritz a real title contender? He's been winning super easily.

2nd round.

Spoiler Alert....No. :gorgeous:

by Suliso Eva Lys is a true lucky loser. 3rd round of a GS for the first time now.

by Suliso About Fritz - more likely than Djokovic or Medvedev I'd say.

by ashkor87 Agree.. Fritz beat Garin with ridiculous ease..medvedev and djoko are huffing and puffing..

by ti-amie This years wonder is Joao Fonseca, 18, from Brazil. He's at 3 all on serve in the fifth set vs Sonego

by ti-amie Sonego won with experience but I see why they're high on the kid. He moves well and hits the ball hard with accuracy. The precision failed in the 5th set due to his being tired in my opinion (I didn't see any of the match prior to mid fifth set).

by Suliso Fonseca needs a bit more time to mature, but the future looks bright.

From what I've seen so far from all involved, she not just a contender. She is a main contender.

by skatingfan Medvedev is getting himself into another 5 setter it seems - down two sets to none to Lerner Tien, but up a break in the 3rd set.

by Suliso Medvedev is on his way out, maybe today maybe in few days. Just a shadow of what he used to be...

by meganfernandez Looks like B5 caught up with Tien. So hard for the young guys to compete in B5 for a few matches at a time.

by skatingfan I missed the end of the match - going to go back & see if I can still watch it - looks like Tien pulled it together to win in a 5th set match tie break - good tournament for the youngsters so far.

It seems to me that, if he were worth it, we could start the infamous "Medvedev is washed up" topic.
I believe his demeanor on court has cost him. He said it himself, he is not enjoying the game.

Fritz is playing incredibly well and should be the clear favorite over anyone he plays until he runs into Sinner in the semis, so yes, I agree he is a contender.

About Djokovic. He beat Monfils 6-3, 6-3 in a lead-up tournament, and Monfils has looked great, so I consider Djokovic a serious contender. We will learn a lot about his form in his next match because Machac has the game to beat him if he does not pick up his level from the first two rounds, which I think he will. We shall see.

by jazzyg The hype around Fonseca AT THIS TOURNAMENT was insane and absurd. He definitely has the potential to win slams down the road, but Caroline Wozniacki was breathlessly talking about him having a shot now before he lost to Sonego. Based on what? Beating Rublev, who has been trending down for a year with only a few good weeks propping up his ranking? Winning 13 matches in a row, with no tour-level victory above a player higher than 99 in the world plus two five-set NEXT GEN wins against Fils and Mensik with four-game sets?

Rublev's big-hitting game allowed Fonseca to look great right now. Sonego's variety exposed the weaknesses that made him have to qualify for the tournament in the first place. He will get to the top, but he's nowhere close yet. I heard him compared to Becker's first Wimbledon title as a teenager. Becker had won Queen's Club right before that run at Wimbledon. Fonseca won the Canberra challenger.

Totally agree. All we can talk about here is potential. I had not seen any Becker comparisons. That is, at least currently, beyond absurd. I also had not read any quotes from Wozniacki. Albeit, I have never taken any advice from Wozniacki. Or remember any word that she has ever said.

Nevertheless, I must ask.....when is the last time that YOU won the Canberra challenger.....

Spoiler Alert. IF Fritz gets to the SF round...and, sure I expect that.....he loses to Sinner.

by jazzyg Exactly who would you pick to beat Sinner?

If being able to beat Sinner is the only thing that makes you a contender, that's an awfully tough standard.

That being said, I think there's a non-zero chance he would beat Sinner. Sinner appears to be as level-headed as they come and he handled the doping allegations perfectly at the U.S. Open, but he's still human. Let's see how he handles it here. Probably well, but not definitely.

by ti-amie I just finished watching the fifth set between Medvedev and Tien. I also saw some of the Sonego vs Fonseca match.

I don't quite get the Fonseca hype either. He is a see ball hit ball type of player but when it was time to put your money where the hype is he failed and it was clear that Sonego would win. Dare I say it but he is the type of player the US tennis establishment loves.

Tien is a different story. Yes there's been a bit of hype around him but he was roundly expected to lose to Medvedev. Tien had MP's in the third set TB (I didn't see that set) but I'm sure nerves got to him and he lost it 8-10.

Tien can play see ball hit ball but he also has the most delicate touch I've seen in someone that young in a long time. He hits a ball that you can get to but can't do jack with. At one point in the fifth set Medvedev was hitting everything to Tien's backhand but Tien weathered the storm.

What got me was the audacity of a drop shot Tien hit at 4-6 in the 5th set tb. When the ball landed Medvedev was not in the frame. Medvedev got it to 7-6 in his favor but I noticed that he had begun shaking out his right arm during the changeover and continued doing so until the ball was in play again. He didn't come out for the post match presser so no one got a chance to ask him about it and since I don't watch him that much I could be wrong but it didn't seem to affect him.

Right now I'd say Tien is a better player than Fonseca. Koenig and I think it was Arias kept referring to the hard work Tien put in during the "off season" and it shows. Tennis is a strange sport though so let's see what time Tien is scheduled to play next round vs Moutet.

For those interested Learner Tien's parents are Khuong Dan Tien and Huyen Tien, Vietnamese immigrants to the US. He was born in Irvine, California.
