by ponchi101 Keys in 3.

by mick1303 Sabalenka in 2.

by Owendonovan I feel Aryna might get a little un-nerved by the pace of Keys. If she adjusts her game to that, she's good, otherwise Keys can pounce with the right mind set.

by ti-amie I don't see Madison winning this but then again, who saw her making the Final?

by ashkor87 There is a myth in many sports, including tennis, that if A beats B narrowly, it will get reversed next time...Saba vs Keys? Both are better than they were the last time they met at the USO so we should probably ignore history between them.i still expect Sabalenka to win, she is the more complete player, and the court is also slow enough..but won't surprise me much if not .

by JTContinental Sabalenka has looked awful to start while Keys came out firing. She’s up two breaks 4-1

by JTContinental Sabalenka looking better in set 2 and up an early break 2-1

6-3, 2-6, 7-5. Sabalenka in tears.Madison and Bjorn over the moon.

by texasniteowl Just amazing by Maddie.

And what a draw to come through! Collins, Rybakina, Svitolina, Swiatek, and Sabalenka. I mean damn.

She's managing a decent speech though.

She was not going to be upstaged by a couple champions.

Has to be one of the hardest-earned Slams titles. What a satisfying way to break through.

by Suliso Very impressive performance by Keys and not just today. A rare win for the "field" as ponchi would say. Very late in her career to win the first Slam, but better late than never!

I agree, what a tournament for Maddie!!! that's a damn tough draw. I'm super happy and so proud of Maddie. She earned that title!!! It's so well deserved!!

by skatingfan Super happy for Maddie. I didn't think she would reach this level, but she really played impressive tennis to win this title taking out Swiatek, and Sabalenka back-to-back, and that match point was such an impressive winning shot.

That is my point, it is not rare anymore. The Keys, Raducanu's, Rybakina's, Kenin's, Stephens, Andreescu's are always there.
You can even spot a bit of a "pattern". You have a player that gets hot for a few months. They can't miss a ball, they pound winners at ease. And then, they fade away. Kenin looked like a solid top 10 player for years to come. She was not. Andreescu's annus mirabilis was amazing. Now she is not a factor. Raducanu... let's not even start there.
At RG, Swiatek will be the favorite. She is truly special on clay. But at W, watch out again for the field. Because somebody may catch fire for 7 matches, and we will be again "surprised".
Love that Maddie won. But I will be the wet blanket. She should have, by now, 3 slams, at least. She has always been this good. But better to get one now.

by Suliso Who's the last "field" winner for men? Cilic at 2014 USO I suppose. It's been more than 10 years now... Unless maybe you count Alcaraz first Slam title.

I wouldn't consider Alcaraz the 'field' at the 2022 US Open as he became #1 after winning the title.

by mick1303 This for me is another argument that slams on ATP side are unique and we should not tinker with the format. Going to bo3 in slams will destroy men's tennis. Look what happened to Davis Cup. Do you want this happening to Slams? IMO if women played bo5 in Slams, there would be less "random" winners. Maybe not immediately, but once the players who are young now, will train specifically for this format, we will have more clear and defined picture on WTA side as well.

Yes, I don't count Alcaraz as "the field" when he won. He was already clearly a top player.
Looking back, I did look if Stan's Aussie was after Cilic's US. It wasn't, so I agree that Cilic is the last "field". Thiem was a top player when he won, Medvedev was a top player when he won.

by ti-amie Why didn't they play the doubles final first? I hope people eventually came back.

And Stan was the 8th seed at the 2014 Australian Open - I'm not sure if that is really 'the field' either, or than it was an era where 3 players really dominated all the majors.

That too. The field in the ATP is less likely to break through.

I hope they came back too.
But if that is the crowd that a Slam's doubles final can get, you look at the data. This is a business, and doubles seems not to be able to hold its side of the deal.

by Owendonovan Maybe they could schedule them closer to the singles finals. 4.5 hours in between singles and doubles finals isn't gonna keep a lot of people around for both matches.

by ashkor87 The ability to hold serve to win a set is a sure sign of mental strength...Keys showed it!

She was broken when she served for the first set - she won the 1st & 3rd sets by breaking Sabalenka.

by ti-amie I'm posting this here too. This is definitely how the #1 player should behave.

by ti-amie BTW I blame Saquon Barkley for me posting all the Sinner winning pics here.

by jazzyg With Keys winning first slam, for the first time in memory there is nothing any current player I pull for has not done that is a realistic possibility.

It's a strange feeling. ( like it.
