Paula Badosa has withdrawn from Charleston due to injury.
Such a sad situation.
She’s worked so hard to overcome injury and get back to where she belongs.
Hopefully she can put these injury struggles behind her.

by ponchi101 She is an injury machine. Which is strange, seeing how fit she is when on court.
by JTContinental It’s her back again. I think she’ll struggle with that long term.

by jazzyg Tennis Channel almost televised back-to-back double bagels today. First, Volynets lost 13 total points to Sebov, a Canadian qualifier who had won both of her qualifying matches in straight sets but looked like one of the worst players I've ever seen. Then Kudermetova was up 6-0, 3-0, 0-40 on American wild card Mateas before Mateas came back to hold (and also broke down 5-1).
They treat Charleston as if it a 1,000-level event, but the field definitely is 500 level.
by JTContinental I think it's treated like that because it is the oldest WTA tournament in the US, but it seems like more of a novelty these days because of the green courts than anything else.

by ashkor87 Impressed with Alexandrova...looking like a clay court player, which she is not...

Alas, a red clay court tournament in the US would be a novelty as well.
by ashkor87 A red clay court takes a lot of maintenance..watering, rolling .the US prefers hard courts because once made, they require not much maintenance...
by ponchi101 Har Tru is not completely like clay. I like playing on it a lot, because it is faster than clay, but you can slide on it.
It should be used a bit more, I would say.
by JTContinental Kenin and Anisimova seem to be improving by the week, which is great to see. Anisimova is enjoying a career high ranking and knocking on the door of the top 10.
Pegula two wins away from returning to the #1 American slot.

True. ..I have played on it once at the Rock Creek Park club in the DC area..it is fun but my serve wa pretty impotent on it;
by ashkor87 So the semis is either 3 Americans and A Russian or 3 Russians and an American...my money is on the Russian

Reporting to you from the USTA National campus where they have 32 Har-Tru courts...

Great. But I meant that there should be a few more tournaments at the pro level.
Last time I played on HT was in Georgia, and the courts were fun. A very pretty small club. And, of course, there are lots and lots of HT courts in Florida.
But for some reason, it never caught on. I guess it is the maintenance costs.

by ashkor87 Looking forward to Pegula vs Kenin..Pegula is the gold standard, of course, but Kenin is a slightly higher class player..a grand slam champion after all. Intriguing matchup.
Saw highlights of the semis .Alexandrova committed a stream of ufes in the first set..couldnt handle the wind...Pegula did better at that.
by jazzyg HarTru is all I can play on now because of having no cartilage in my right knee and in the South all of the clubs and parks have primarily clay courts.
I've never liked the footing but that's because I pretty much only played on hard courts until the knee deteriorated. I agree with Ponch more tournaments should be played on it.
