by ponchi101 I can't recall when was the last time I felt a MS1000 was as wide open as this one.
I say: the field has a 50% chance.

Plus. Why did Gasquet get a WC? That is pretty unjustifiable.

What Dry says. :D
I say the field is anybody not in the top 8 seeds, because this is 64 player draw.
I give Fils a better chance than Medvedev, for example. This is a good chance for a Machac, for example.

That is a reflection on the ranking system, not on the tournament or the players

by ashkor87 The best 4 players here are Djokovic, Alcaraz, Tsitsipas, Rublev..one of them will win. If that happens, that is not 'field'. We shall see

Actually, you are being more generous on "the field" than I am. I say Rune is not the field; he has won a MS100 before and has been a finalist here, for example. I say Ruud is not the field; he loves clay and has a been a RU at RG twice.

by jazzyg Gasquet got the wild card because this is (likely) his final year and the most famous win of his career was in Monte Carlo, against Federer when Federer was supposed to be unbeatable.

He's won it twice. It is not as if he has been a failure there.
There has got to be one tournament where he will have his fewest wins.

by mick1303 Actually Djokovic won 39 matches in Monte Carlo, which is behind only Nadal

It is actually not an easy endeavor to compare matches/titles won in Masters between tournaments. The main reason is that unlike slams they are traveling around. Only Rome, Canadian, Monte Carlo and Paris Indoors have stable location through the whole Open Era. Of course, you can compare matches won in each masters individually, but it would be not very informative to compare these results between different tournaments. Some tournaments are defunct (or downgraded), while others have much shorter history. But even with that in mind, Monte Carlo is rather significant in Djokovic career. For instance, he won Canadian Open 4 times, but only won 37 matches there (less than in MC). Just played there much less.

by ponchi101 He has always have excellent court speed. If he has learned a bit how to slide better and not dart like a rocket at the first sign, he has all he needs to be good on the surface.
OTOH. When you win 0 & 0 at ATP level, something was wrong with the other player too.

Image

by skatingfan Lorenzo Musetti looks like a completely different person with the short hair.

by skatingfan Apparently winning the first set 6-3 is a bad omen for the rest of the match - Alcaraz wins 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

by ashkor87 Well the field remained that.

by ashkor87 DeMinaur has been the real revelation of the tournament.. when someone does well on a surface he is not good on, it means he is really playing well.. I look for him to challenge seriously for the title at Wimbledon. Musetti is supposed to do well on clay, so nothing new there.

by Suliso Is that really true about deMinaur?

by ashkor87 watched a bit of the video - Alcaraz is too defensive in his return position.. it is not as if it is Sampras serving... he needs to step in a bit more

by ashkor87
Suliso wrote: Sun Apr 13, 2025 4:15 pm Is that really true about deMinaur?
meaning?

by Suliso That his game shouldn't work on clay. He could have played for Spain after all.

by ponchi101 Demiñaur has made it to the QF's of the US, French and Wimby. It is not as if he is a bad player on any surface.
He lacks weapons, I think. But the speed is awesome and he competes well. So, he can do well anywhere.
I say he can make a semi at a slam one day. But not more.

Speed and defense are less valuable on clay . You need some weapons to actually win the point..
