Yeah!
Now if Noskova beats Swiatek (30% chance anyway), the pop psychologists will say Swiatek is afraid of Ostapenko. I am just waaaiting..

by ashkor87 Gauff vs Yastremska is an early ambush waiting to happen..

by ashkor87 assuming Madrid continues to be 'fast through the air', we should not expect Ostapenko, Anisimova, Fritz, to do well here.. they all need a bit of extra time to set up and hit..which they wont get.

by ponchi101 Ostapenko out before 3R. She must still be giddy over Stuttgart ;)

She had no business losing that match today. You may be right.

by ashkor87 There is certainly something odd about this tournament..Federer has won it twice (plus once on hard), Kvitova 3 times! All Wimbledon champions...of course, Nadal has 4, djokovic 3..
And defending champion is ..Rublev!

by ponchi101 Don't forget the blue courts.

I liked the blueness but it turned out to be slippery...

by ashkor87 kudermetova sisters meet each other in the first round! why cant they program it so such things dont happen? Technically very easy to do

by ashkor87 two comebacks stalled on the runway.. Kvitova and Osaka.. sad.

by ashkor87 Looking forward to seeing how Rybakina does . Madrid should suit her, if she is in the right frame of mind. Probably Kessler in her opener..

Why would you want the draw not to be random that way? Slippery slope if you start manpulating the draw this way...

Imagine years ago if say they intentionally were putting Serena and Venus on opposite halfs for example.

Why would you want the draw not to be random that way? Slippery slope if you start manpulating the draw this way...

Imagine years ago if say they intentionally were putting Serena and Venus on opposite halfs for example.
Only first round

by ptmcmahon That's still draw manipulation, even if it is just for "first round."

if it they start with that, then they can easily say "let's not make these people play each other either."

I think it would be a bad idea. Already as it is enough people have said draws are rigged.

Besides, no guarantee they get to play each other if it's not in first round anyway!

by ponchi101 And. They are both pros. And this is only a little bit worse than playing a friend, which I gather everybody in the tour has (and has happened to them too).

by ashkor87 pleased to see Andreescu playing well.. beat Kessler, which I didnt expect..

by JTContinental The NCAA kids are usually no bueno on clay, so not a big surprise to me.

by ashkor87 Rybakina next...good test for both...

by ponchi101 Eala put up a good fight for 1 1/2 sets. Maybe she has to work a bit more on the physical part.
But she keeps looking promising. Let's see in a few months.
(And this is Iga's surface, of course).

by jazzyg To no one's surprise, Ostapenko loses her first match, going out in straights to 35-year old Sevastova, who is on the comeback trail.

It's about the change in surface speed, Ostapenko's inconsistency and the history of players in their first match after being surprise winners of a tournament the week before. A never-ending story.

by ponchi101 And Alona definitely went partying on Monday night :D

by ashkor87 the 'other' Latvian player saved Swiatek! Sevastova beat Ostapenko...

Sevastova is all junk balls, so no surprise that she would frustrate the trigger happy Ostapenko.

by ashkor87 given the form he is in, DeMinaur really should win this title...! The others are not really in peak form..

by ashkor87 impressive win by Rybakina over Andreescu.. she looked in good touch.. maybe she can win this tournament, Wimbledon champions should ! (like Kvitova)

by skatingfan Tennis is a weird sport. Gabriel Diallo lost in the 2nd round of qualifying to Borna Coric, but then got into the draw as a lucky loser. Coric lost in the first round of the main draw whereas Diallo is now into the 3rd round.

by ponchi101 It tells you how many matches are always really 50-50. And, as we know, when matches are 50-50, you are bound to string 3 matches in a row every once in a while.
Or 5, like Ostapenko last week.

by Suliso Good win for Bencic over Haddad Maia on her weakest surface. Perhaps she could get into seeding range for Wimbledon.

Also Djokovic at last has aged out.

Recovering from a muscle tear at that age is much harder.
Well, I said it a few years ago. NONE of the new crop was going to beat the Big Three. It was going to be time. And it was that.

by Suliso Don't you think Sinner did last year? Alcaraz as well.

Suliso wrote: Sat Apr 26, 2025 4:27 pm Don't you think Sinner did last year? Alcaraz as well.
No. I think that he had already started the decline.
It is a thin line. For example, you can say that indeed, Sinner finally took him down (and Alcaraz). I can say that he was already past his prime. It is just that now he is losing to Arnaldi's and Mencik's and much lower ranked players, so it is easier to spot.
And, BTW. It is not as if I can claim that "I said it" last year (that he was already in decline). I did not. But now it seems to me that he was. His last great victory was at the Olympics, and he also bested Carlos at the Aussie. So, his last bangs. Now we get the whimpers.

by ponchi101 Imagine the kind of "good" hangover that Alona must have had that Sevastova lost love & love to Shaider.

The last 5 years or so I feel Borna's cool with just picking up a pay check and living a nice $500k/year life.

He's just got to accept it. It's is hard to accept when you still have those occasional matches that you play about as good as you ever have, tricking you into thinking you're "back".

by ashkor87 love to watch Kasatkina moving on clay.. she seems to jut float.. Alexandrova getting really good at changing direction, especially on her backhand - very useful on clay, even more than on hard.. reminds me of Bencic, Hingis.. very surprised at how well she is doing on clay.. she will do even better on grass, she always does. Look for her to go deep at Wimbledon...

by ashkor87 DeMinaur is going to win this tournament (I hope)

by ashkor87 when will people learn NOT to drop-shot Coco? She is so quick, it is pure suicide.. Bencic discovered that today.. coaching error.

by ashkor87 coco versus andreeva next.. nice matchup. It will tell us a lot about Andreeva - does she have the class? Probably yes. Coco played very well against Bencic today.. I assume she did not give away too many points with dfs.. she will need to play tight against Andreeva.. They are both quick, great defence, actually a lot like each other.

by mick1303 No backup power for such an event is a sheer embarrassment... I have backup power in my small apartment.

by ponchi101 I have never been to a European country with anything like backup power. Nor does any city in the USA/Canada.
Backup power is for places where you expect the power to be unreliable. Not even Colombia has a culture of backup power, and they were a war-torn country for a long time.

by mick1303 No, backup power is for places where having uninterrupted power is important. There are no places where power is guaranteed.

by ponchi101 Well, it is just a tennis tournament. Not a hospital.

by jazzyg I'm not counting Djokovic out until he struggles at Roland Garros, which he might. He has been no bueno on clay except in Paris for a few years now.

He looked really good at the Aussie Open until he got hurt. That could have been the outlier and not representative, but I need to see these struggles at a slam first.

by ashkor87 I have given up trying to figure out Sakkari so..can she beat Svitolina on clay?

by JTContinental She’s back with her old coach, I think, so maybe

by ashkor87 Uchijima is evidently better than I think..about to beat Alexandrova..anyone see her play?

by ponchi101 Very close match. Not really an indicator. The woman can play because all of them can play nowadays.
Or at least, play at that same level.

by jazzyg If everyone plays to their top level, I like Ruud and Musetti to reach the final.

Ruud needs to play with the proper desire. Hs has the best clay court game left but seems content with being a good but not great player.

Musetti vs. DI Minaur will be interesting. Di Minaur has been terrific recently but his forehand still can break down under pressure.

very impressed with Svitolna these days.. she really hits her forehand hard now.. her entire body weight goes into it.. something Coco should learn..

true, but
DeMinaur's serving is awesome though, that matters in these conditions.. I am betting on him to win the whole thing .

by ashkor87 Tsitsipas Musetti was an entertaining one - always great to see two single handed backhands.. but Tsitsipas either needs to learn to volley or stop pretendng he can.. he paid the price often...
