by ti-amie I'm going to do this as best I can right now especially since the tournament site and the WTA site don't agree about who is playing in some cases. The person I'm using as a source has been around for years and he's usually correct.
That said, here's the most up to date entry list for the WTA.

by ashkor87 So great to see the Queen of tennis back on court!!

by JTContinental After falling down 1-3 early, Vee/Baptiste won 11 of the last 12 games to beat Bouchard/Ngounoue 6-3, 6-1. Not the stiffest of competition out there, but Venus was the best player on the court.

by ti-amie I caught the end of the match. It was great seeing a full house and Venus doing her patented twirl.

by ashkor87 court looks slow to medium - ideal for people like Rybakina and Shelton too..

by ponchi101 I hope you are right, but I say Elena's days as a challenger at every tournament are over. She had that "by now common" period in which she was playing top level tennis (W and that Aussie final) but she has come down a lot.
I hope she makes me eat my words, though.

by dryrunguy Svajda's service motion is... remarkably effective for so little, Sjeng Schalken-esque knee bend...

I'm hoping as she matures she will ditch Stefano Vukov and his cycle of abuse, and I think we'll see better results consistently.

Just kidding. I'm super proud of Venus. I would preferred, however, she broke at 3-5 in the second.

by ptmcmahon Sounds like a dare to me!

by ponchi101 And who in his sane tennis mind has ever picked Kostyuk as a safe slam dunk? :P
She is as streaky as they come. Watch her now reach 4R, and take some people out who will pick her opponent in 3R.

by Owendonovan I kinda loved Venus' comment about her COBRA. When a very wealthy person is complaining about COBRA payments, says a lot about the industry.

by ponchi101 Naomi loses to Raducanu 4&2.
It is not the losing. It is the scores. I know that Raducanu is very good on hards, but so is (was?) Naomi. This should at least have had a 7-5, 7-6 set, or had gone three.
She is not looking good at all (Naomi).

I was on that bandwagon at Wimbledon, but I never considered her a slam dunk in the match. Just a better possibility than many of the other choices. :D However, I was obviously wrong.

Does the heat affect the speed of the court? If so it's much hotter now than it was in the beginning of the week.

by ti-amie I didn't expect Venus to win today. She's got that WC into Cincy singles and may b eyeing one into the USOpen. After all 45 years old is 45 years old.

She's still in doubles though.

The place emptied out quickly and no one was chasing after the balls Frech was hitting into the stands.

I suppose it does... another random force to factor in ! But I havent seen the matches of yesterday yet.. will have to check.

Kenin's play today was listless to put it mildly. The heat and humidity of DC in the summer is no joke so maybe that affected her? The comm kept trying to find reasons for her lack of coherent play.

by ashkor87 Fernandez really showed the value of the volley - she always does.. the one thing Osaka can improve is her propensity and willingness to come to the net behind a good, deep shot - she hangs about at the baseline and the point goes on - which it shouldnt..!

by Suliso I wonder why Osaka has declined so much. Other players her age came back from childbirth much closer to their former top level.

by ashkor87 she seems to lack a positive, attacking mindset..

Suliso wrote: Fri Jul 25, 2025 5:04 am I wonder why Osaka has declined so much. Other players her age came back from childbirth much closer to their former top level.
Agree. It is a bit puzzling.
My wild guess: if you stop playing, you lose that final bit of accuracy and precision. You simply cannot come back and hit that same shot 95% of the times. You are down now to 92%. And at this level, that is enough for the other players to beat you.
But, again, just because I can't tell why her tennis has gone away.

by Suliso I'd buy that argument, but then why Svitolina and Bencic can?

by JTContinental I think they are more interested in tennis than Naomi

by ponchi101
Suliso wrote: Fri Jul 25, 2025 3:10 pm I'd buy that argument, but then why Svitolina and Bencic can?
Because Elina and Belinda's top was not the same as Naomi's?
I am at a loss. It makes little sense, especially since it is not as if she was 29 when she took her maternity leave.
Plus. Before she took her maternity leave, Naomi was already showing signs of not being the same player that she was when she won her slams. Let's not forget she was having problems already, mainly on the mental aspects. So maybe she simply has declined in many aspects, and motherhood is not to be considered a factor in that decline.

by ti-amie Naomi's personal life has affected her adversely. The father of her child was constantly cheating on her, there were several break-ups and reconciliations and then she became pregnant. The pregnancy was difficult and the relationship still ended.

This was not someone she met casually but someone she's known all of her life and I think she thought she could "fix" him but someone with addiction issues has to want to be fixed as we all know.

I think it would've been best for her to do what Anisimova did and take time off to try and get herself together.
She still looks fragile to me.

Now watch her win the US Open.

Remember her first Slam title was marred by Patrick's signaling to his player

Think she was trying to model the Williams' success especially naming Serena as her idol (was Dad her coach at one time?)

Cordae was too busy for her, IMO

Unfortunately, I think winning AO in 2021 will be the last Slam she will win due her issues.

That's tight but it seems right.

by ti-amie Moutet coming back from 0-4 to 5-3 in the second set.

I looked at the TV and got cognitive dissonance looking at how soaked Moutet's kit is. I got a total flashback to a night match during the South American Golden Swing when you can see just about everything a man is working with...

by ti-amie deMinaur closes it out on a Moutet error 6-4, 6-3.

by ashkor87 Rybakina, I think, is one of those very good players who lacks an extra gear.. if she can blow away her opponent, she will, but if it gets close, sometimes her opponent is someone like Swiatek or Sabalenka or even Gauff, who have enough great defense to make her raise her game, but she has no fifth gear, so she cant. we saw that at the FO when she couldnt stamp out Swiatek's resistance, and earlier at the AO a couple years ago, when she lost to Sabalenka, I thought she could have won, but when it became tight, she became passive, while Saba went for her shots.

by ashkor87 meanwhile, I really dislike Tiafoe's forehand - all arm, no body weight behind it... he will get injured sooner or later, and anyway it is not as effective as it could be.

by ashkor87 Davidovich Fokina has been an eye-opener to me, I hadnt seen him much - very impressive win over Shelton - great court sense, generally good all-round game..

by jazzyg I mean, Townsend was out of shape and her singles career has been negligible and nowhere near what people thought it would be.

Exactly. Given the current trajectory of tennis as a whole, the large stress is on the performance in singles. Her career record of 54-74 is subpar for someone who was touted as future star as a junior. The whole narrative of "body shaming" is an attempt to bring politics to where it shouldn't belong. Top level athletes shall be in shape - it's a given.

ashkor87 wrote: Sun Jul 27, 2025 1:56 am Meanwhile I hope Patrick McEnroe and the entire USTA setup apologized to TT for body-shaming a kid ..all hail the new #1 in the world!
Patrick only made it to #3 in Doubles. Always rode his brother's coattails.......(right into the booth)

by ponchi101 But nobody ever claimed that Patrick was ever going to be as good as John, much less that he was going to become a dominant force in the sport. Which was said about Townsend, in singles.
And it has always been obvious that the level of physicality demanded in doubles is not the same as in singles.

When somebody points out that a female player needs to get in better shape, it is body shaming. When we said, on many occasions, that Nalbandian or Baghdatis had to get in better shape, it was taken as a proper assessment of an area in which two very good players were not working hard enough.
There was a bit of a double standard there.

by ponchi101
ashkor87 wrote: Sun Jul 27, 2025 4:21 am meanwhile, I really dislike Tiafoe's forehand - all arm, no body weight behind it... he will get injured sooner or later, and anyway it is not as effective as it could be.
His FH and his serve are very unorthodox. He gets away with them because he is, obviously, extremely strong and a superb athlete.
His hand-eye coordination is also extreme. But if that goes away just by a little bit, and it will sooner or later, he will be framing a lot of balls.

by JTContinental I do want to point out that TT was the number 1 ranked junior player at the time his comments, so she actually was at the top of her game. Even if true, McEnroe’s comments didn’t need to be made publicly, or about a 16 year old girl. They clearly affected her as a player going forward.

To his credit, he walked back this comment and apologized years ago.

by jazzyg I have watched two junior matches in my life. One was Townsend-Bencic in the 2013 Wimbledon final and the other was Gauff-McNally in the 2018 Roland Garros final.

Townsend was considered a surefire top 20 player and probable slam title contender when she was the No. 1 junior. The match with Bencic was high quality (I remember being siper impressed by Bencic), but by any measure, Townsend's singles career was a massive dissppointment even before she had a kid. Despite her denisls, it is pretty clear her conditioning was a major factor in her generally terrible singles results. She has fantastic hands but she simply does not move well enough.

by ponchi101 From the book of odd shots.
I am watching Monfils/Barrios Vera. BV hits his drop shot, from the FH side, by sliding his hand all the way up to the throat of the racquet, and htting the shot then.
Truly unseen by me before. But is does work; he has good touch with it.

by dryrunguy ADF's match closing challenges are well-documented, to say the least. But this was just downright brutal. I hoped beyond hope he was in the clear while serving for the match at 5-3, 15-0 when ADM completely botched a volley. That really should have done the trick. But then ADF doubled to make it 30-15, and you could just see it coming.

ADF did very well to keep fighting, and like always, he had his chances to overcome. But ADM came up with the good when he really needed them, and that is the fundamental difference between these two--has been for a while.

Heartbreaking stuff. And the post-match video of ADM consoling him summed it up.

Brutal. Just brutal. Especially after ADF showed the goods and fortitude to survive the Fritz match. But no one will remember that.

by ti-amie Oh well there are no videos anywhere from the men's final. Maybe they're on Xitter but I don't go there.

Of course they are. That's what people do. We should just add a "how to abuse professional athletes online" to global first grade curricula.

by jazzyg De Minaur stayed in it with a defensive lob that caught the outside of the sideline on one of the match points. ADF hit a pretty good shot off of it, but did not put the next volley away, allowing de Minaur to hit a passing shot. I don't feel like he choked that match away, like he did from 5-2, 15-40 up against the inferior Kecmanovic earlier this year. He just got unlucky.

For the last three years, I've felt like ADF was a top 10 talent with the 200th-ranked brain, but he's improved significantly in that department. The abuse he took in the past (the underhand serve on match point against Rune at Wimbledon two years ago and other brain camps) was somewhat justified, but not this time. He got some bad breaks against a very good player.
