by ashkor87 very strong field, unless people are exhausted and not able to play their best... Sabalenka is the best player in this field, and she is defending champion. I wonder how motivated Swiatek would be, or Coco and Pegula for that matter... it is too late for them to catch Sabalenka this year anyway.

A couple of really exciting first round matches- Kostyuk vs Muchova, Cirstea - Ostapenko, Osaka-Leylah ...several in the next couple rounds.. Rybakina vs Osaka, Alexandrova vs Pegula, Andreeva vs Muchova are the ones I am looking forward to.

by ashkor87 The Beijing-Wuhan double is quite rare - of course, Wuhan hasnt been around that long but still.. Garcia is the only one I know who has done it. Wonder how it compares with the IW-Miami double .. the conditions seem pretty similar, between Beijing and Wuhan, but the players seem more tired by now.. probably best to be fresh, like Sabalenka is..

by ashkor87 Sabalenka has won this tournament 3 times, every time she has played, in fact! I would bet on 4 in a row...

I was thinking Madison may not play.. opens up a spot

by JTContinental Wouldn't this be her first time? If so, I think she'd find a way.

by ashkor87 Raducanu had to stop due to illness.. heat, humidity, slow courts - a lethal combianation, when the player is anyway tired.. The tours should think of a uniform heat policy, no matches at high noon anywhere..

Maddie? I saw a comment that it is a shoulder injury? Apparently she at least mentioned it on the Players Box podcast she is part of. But I haven't listened/watched myself.

by ashkor87 Now folks like Osaka who has lived and trained in Florida, will do well! it isnt about the tennis any more.

by ashkor87 Siegemund over Andreeva was an almost textbook example of when to go to the net, and how effective it is, in these conditions...

by JTContinental I didn’t see the match, but since Andreeva is peevish and Siegemund is peeving, that would not be a good matchup for Mirra.

what I saw is Siegemund picking her approach shots well and volleying to finish the point, which she always does well but what was really special was her choice of when to approach the net.. volleying is a very effective way to win a point on a slow court but you cant just blindly rush there, especially against someone like Andreeva, who has great passing shots.

by ashkor87 one of the more interesting (and encouraging) developments is the rise of Siniakova as a formidable singles player.. inspired by Krejcikova, I wonder? Her serving action is a joke, but the serve itself is reasonably effective, and the rest of her game is really good, volleys, serve returns..

yes, shoulder.. but she may have recovered by now, hopefully? I dont see her playing anywhere though.. sadly.

by ashkor87 Sabalenka was frighteningly good against Samsonova, a pretty good, powerful player herself.. Rybakina next.. that should be a great match. Rybakina usually does well against Sabalenka on these kinds of courts, so it could be a good match anyway.

Rybakina and Paolini are racing towards the last spot on the YEC roster (as I said, maybe both will get in if Maddy doesnt play). Rybakina is only about 50 points ahead in the race right now.

She was already good. Her story is one of a player that went from a decent singles player to a player that focused mostly on the doubles. Her success there is clear, but she was not clueless when playing singles. If she is now getting better in singles, good for her. But she was there before.

?

Siniakova has always been a pretty formidable singles player--well before Krejcikova, who has a very different playing style--not top tier, but she never will be.

by ashkor87 Pegula is now 2-6, 6-0 against Siniakova.. any thoughts on why these wild swings happen? I have, but will wait to hear from others first..

by ptmcmahon I had the match on (in the background) last night and Siniakova started getting hot/tired and making more mistakes as it went on. I missed the first set but Pegula said after she just calmed down and relaxed after the first set.

by JTContinental Pegula has punched her ticket to the YEC with today’s win, and Paolini has bypassed Rybakina for 8th place

by ashkor87 wonder what is wrong with Swiatek.. a string of surprising losses - first Navarro, now Paolini (whom she had beaten some 6 times in a row).. is she just tired? I keep thinking her topspin is not as effective on hard courts, but she did win Cincy after all...so I dont know.

by Suliso Must be some health or motivation issues behind it.

rewatched the highlights of Cincy.. Paolini gave her a good fight there too.. it was not easy...

Suliso wrote: Sat Oct 11, 2025 6:57 am Must be some health or motivation issues behind it.
Or there is something that the players have noticed and they have partially figured her out.
I mean, her year has been a success; Wimby and Cincy are two very big wins. But her consistency is not the same.
I don't mind her losing to Paolini; Paolini is a fighter and she can win wars of attrition. But the loss to Navarro was very odd. I love Emma but she has no weapons to speak of. The kind of player that Iga used to have for breakfast.

by JTContinental Swiatek has shown a fairly predictable pattern since late last year of folding if her usual strategy of relentlessly hitting the ball downward for winners isn’t working. If you can withstand the early barrage, you’ve got a good chance.
