I got an alert earlier this afternoon making the actions the NYPD is taking in the case of demonstrations are something draconian and that we should all hide inside and stay away from windows.

Illinois man kills six-year-old Muslim boy and stabs mother in hate crime

A 71-year-old man in Plainfield, Illinois, has been charged with murder and a hate crime after stabbing a child and his mother because they were Muslims in an attack that killed a six-year-old boy and left the adult seriously wounded.

In a statement posted to the Will county sheriff’s office social media page, law enforcement responded to an emergency call made by a 32-year-old woman who alleged her landlord had attacked her with a knife.

The Will county sheriff’s office said: “Detectives were able to determine that both victims in this brutal attack were targeted by the suspect due to them being Muslim and the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict involving Hamas and the Israelis.”

On the scene, officers found the 71-year-old suspect sitting upright on the ground near the home’s driveway and inside found two stabbing victims, a 32-year-old woman and 6-year-old boy who each suffered over a dozen stab wounds to their chest, torso and arms.

The suspect was identified as 71-year-old Joseph M Czuba and police said he was the property’s landlord.

“Joseph Czuba did not make any statements to detectives regarding his involvement in this heinous attack. Despite the suspect not providing a statement to detectives, personnel were able to gather enough information through interviews and evidence to formally charge Joseph Czuba with numerous criminal offenses,” said the Will county sheriff office in a statement.

Czuba was charged with murder, two counts of hate crimes and other offenses.

The child was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, and the woman is hospitalized in serious condition, but expected to survive.

CAIR International, the largest Muslim civil rights organization in the US, said in a statement on social media: “We are shocked and disturbed to learn that a landlord in Chicago expressing anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian views broke into a Muslim family’s apartment and attacked them with a knife, injuring the mother and killing her 6-year-old son, Wadea Al-Fayoume.”

The skyrocketing cost of insurance premiums in Florida is leading residents to drop their insurance, consider selling their home, and even move out of the state, according to recent reports.

For years now, the sunny, vibrant state has been a magnetic destination for many Americans—a phenomenon which has been driving up demand for housing, especially during the pandemic, as well as home prices.

But while Florida was the number one state in the country that people moved to in 2022, it was also the one with the highest number of residents wanting to relocate, according to a SelfStorage.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 275,666 people left Florida in 2022—nearly 23,000 people every month. Most, according to the bureau, relocated to places like Georgia (46,884), North Carolina (42,301), Tennessee (36,200), South Carolina (31,456) and Texas (29,975).

There are many reasons why people are leaving the Sunshine State—including the rising cost of living, the skyrocketing home prices, high property taxes, and the exacerbated risk of deadly and devastating extreme weather events like hurricanes.

The state's insurance premiums, which are the highest in the country according to a recent study by the Insurance Information Institute (Triple I), are also one of the reasons Floridians are considering leaving the state, as many can no longer afford insurance on their homes.

The state's insurance premiums, which are the highest in the country according to a recent study by the Insurance Information Institute (Triple I), are also one of the reasons Floridians are considering leaving the state, as many can no longer afford insurance on their homes.

Several homeowners told The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) that the increased cost of premiums has led them to completely or partially drop their insurance—what's known as going bare—and even consider selling their properties.

Home insurance premiums have tripled in the state in the past five years, with residents currently paying on average more than $4,200 per year. The national average is $1,700, according to data from Triple I.

Some insurance premiums have risen by about nine times what they were in 2022, Oscar Seikaly, chief executive of NSI Insurance Group, told the WSJ, with multimillion-dollar homes generating premiums costing as much as $600,000 a year.

This happened in part because construction costs—which are taken into consideration when determining how expensive it would be to rebuild a home once destroyed—have risen by a staggering 40 percent since 2017, and because of the excess litigation going on in Florida.

Analysts have expressed their fears of what could happen should a major natural disaster, like a hurricane, strike the state as many Floridians do not have insurance coverage.

Going bare is "very dangerous, because once the storm or the fire hits, if they don't have insurance, they're going to suffer really big losses," Yanjun (Penny) Liao, an economist at Resources for the Future, previously told Newsweek.

But as insurance premiums are expected to continue surging and state legislators are still considering a solution to the mass exodus of major insurers from the state, more and more Floridians are expected to give up coverage on their homes.

At least 16 people have been killed in shootings in Lewiston, Maine, a law enforcement official said, based on initial information gathered by first responders at three locations. That figure could rise. Dozens more were injured, said the person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Authorities were investigating multiple active shooter events late Wednesday, as a suspect remained at large, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook. “We are encouraging all businesses to lock down and or close while we investigate,” the sheriff’s office said.

Manhunt for suspect in 18 deaths continues

LEWISTON, Maine — A manhunt involving hundreds of police officers is ongoing after deadly shootings at a bowling alley and bar shook this city of about 38,000 people around 7 p.m. on Wednesday. At least 18 people were killed in Lewiston and at least 13 were injured, Gov. Janet Mills said Thursday morning. Law enforcement personnel are searching for 40-year-old Robert Card, of Bowdoin, Maine, a suspect police believe is responsible for all of the deaths. Police said he is armed and dangerous and should not be approached. At a news conference Thursday evening, Lewiston native Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) called for an assault-weapons ban, a notable departure from his past votes against gun-control legislation. “The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure,” he said.
