There's a lot of stuff in that article...

"Holliday said that, on the day she worked at Richneck, one boy shoved another during recess and the boy scraped his knee. The injured boy had to go to the nurse’s office for treatment.
Afterward, the principal came to the classroom and told the boys to calm down because they were shouting, Holliday said. The principal filed a report about the shoving incident. Holliday said that, after the experience, she decided she would not substitute at Richneck Elementary School again."

^ There is no school on the planet where this type of thing between kids doesn't occur regularly. This is not a huge issue - you talk with the kids doing the 'shoving' and tell them that's not acceptable.
It was silly to include this in the article.

"There have been three shootings on school grounds in Newport News since late 2021."

^ That's about average for any county in the U.S., isn't it?

"the district is purchasing 90 metal detectors to install at all Newport News schools and acquiring clear backpacks to hand out to students."

^ This is an obvious example of a country that has failed.

Several years ago, I was asked to go into a school to work one-on-one with a 6 year old girl who was misbehaving and 'disturbing the class'. The girl had some developmental problems.
On my first day with her, as I was sent to an empty classroom with the girl, her teacher gave me crayons, a colouring book, and scissors, and told me "Be careful with the scissors - she likes to stab people."
I looked at the teacher, smiled, and replied "That won't be a problem."
And it never was a problem in the 2 school years I worked with this girl. I never had even the slightest problem with her. She and I got along great, and she was wonderful to work with.

What I saw was a school and a system whereby this little 6 year old girl had a guidance counselor, a social worker, a 'behavioural therapist', a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a neurologist, and 2 or 3 other 'specialists' involved with her. Every couple of weeks, whosever turn it was would try their 'cure' on her, which consisted of drugs from those who could prescribe them. Her 'medication' changed every few weeks - and sometimes she had none.
After getting to know this girl through working with her (and never having any hint of a problem with her), I told all of those 'professional experts' - for whom this little girl was merely a 'client' - "Stop trying to fix her. She is not broken. She's a wonderful, funny, intelligent, caring little girl. She's simply different from most kids. That does not mean that she is bad, or that she is defective. She's just different - and that's ok. The times when she acts out are because you are telling her - by word and deed - that she is not normal and needs to be fixed. Treat her well and with the same respect you show other kids, and she'll be fine."

I'm not drawing a parallel between this little girl and the boy who shot his teacher, and I'm not saying that the solution with this boy is simple... but just to show that very often with children who are 'different' from others, the better you treat them, the less trouble they will cause.

It's reported that the shooter is now dead at his own hands.

Well, but let's be reasonable. That gun is like the bare minimum you need for self protection, right?

Seven people were shot to death on Monday afternoon in San Mateo County, Calif., the sheriff’s office said, the second mass shooting in the state in three days.

The shooting happened around 2:20 p.m. local time at two separate locations near Highway 92 and the Half Moon Bay city limits, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, the authorities said. Another person was transported to Stanford Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A suspect, Zhao Chunli, 67, of Half Moon Bay, was found in his car in the parking lot of a sheriff’s office substation in Half Moon Bay, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Chunli was taken into custody without incident and the weapon was located in his vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “There is no current outstanding threat to the community.”

“Chunli was taken into custody without incident and the weapon was located in his vehicle,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “There is no current outstanding threat to the community.”
“The motive for the shooting is currently unknown,” the sheriff’s office said. A news conference was scheduled for Monday evening.

The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said it was “responding to a shooting with multiple victims” just before 4 p.m. near Highway 92 and the Half Moon Bay city limits, about 30 miles south of San Francisco. The authorities were dispatched to the 12700 block of Cabrillo Highway.

The shooting came two days after 11 people were killed at a Lunar New Year festival in Monterey Park, Calif. Officials called this the deadliest mass shooting in Los Angeles County’s history.
Officials lamented the continuing violence on Monday afternoon.
“Two hours ago I joined my colleagues on the Capitol steps for a vigil for the victims of the shooting in Monterey Park,” Marc Berman, a California assemblyman, said on Twitter. “Before we’ve even had a chance to mourn them, there is yet another mass shooting — this time in Half Moon Bay. In my district.”

Josh Becker, a state senator, said on Twitter, “Gun violence has come to our district today and I will do whatever I can to support the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department and Half Moon Bay city officials during this tragic event.”

Two Asian male shooters in a few days. Both in California. There MUST be a connection. Somehow. This is breaking the historical mold and shaping an especially dangerous narrative.

Yup - keep pasting these mass killings all over the media...
That's a sure way of ensuring that they continue...
Unbelievable.

Every time a psychologically unwell person who is contemplating killing someone sees the enormous attention these things attract all over the media, they get closer to doing it themselves. Because to these people, they are doing it for a reason - they kill people for a reason that 'makes sense' to them. So they want attention paid to their act. Even if the reason is not overtly divulged, they feel that they are making a statement. And knowing that the media will cover it definitely provides them with an important incentive to go ahead and do it.

Without the promise of media attention, I am absolutely convinced that the number of these mass killings would be at least cut in half.
It certainly would not do any more harm to try this approach, given the disgustingly alarming frequency of these mass killings in the U.S. That this approach has not ever even been tried tells me that human life is not valued very highly.

Does that part really matter? As long as guns are sold like candies and mental health treatment is a no no...

Absolutely. Just the other day we had yet another attack on an Asian woman (remember the smirk?). Crimes committed by Asians (men) harbor the potential to further escalate anti-Asian sentiment--and further anti-Asian violence.

Maybe so... To me this mass shooting business in US seems like an equal opportunity endaveour. There have been Asian perpetrators before. The only surprising thing would be if women started to do it too.

This was done on local news. There's a larger element of this baked into the fabric as they do many more live man-on-the-street type interviews that can go awry or contain more speculation. As long as they aren't presenting it as verifiable fact, it's not that bad. The problem is more when national news picks it up and covers it as if it's been fully vetted. National news is so much more heavily produced than local news and more caution is taken in what is presented to the viewer. And that's for regular stories, emergency situations will all have some of this as part of their reporting on both.

Also, one of the big problems in policing is not listening to community members that have much, much greater knowledge of their neighborhood and goings on than the police do, who can jump to conclusions fueled by institutional racism, conditioning and making ill-informed assumptions on their very best day. It's what a community policing approach looks to address. When it's many witnesses and community members saying the same thing, it's much less problematic to speak about that speculation on-air.

Mass shootings are far from an equal opportunity endeavor, especially when it's broken down to what most people think of as a mass shooting and not the textbook definition.
