So much for Osaka easily winning this tournament... It is a very important tournament for a lot of players, particularly those from smaller countries.

Now Muguruza the only GS champion left in women's singles draw. I still wouldn't call her a strong favorite.

The realist in me wonders if this changes their considerations for Mixed Doubles (I presume they were qualified).
Guess I just had to wait until this morning. She is paired with Kubot.

admit I am surprised to see Djokovic playing - but at most it's 4 matches, so...?

On paper Sakkari/Tsitsipas is the strongest team.

Will be interesting to see if any of the mixed teams pull out if the respective players are still active in other draws.

I am trying to find the list of alternates - oh, found it

Kind of a bummer some of the more exciting alternates are further down...

Muguruza is the best player left, Bencic is the best on hard courts.. neither of which means much! i would love to see Giorgi win, but she has broken my heart (and others, too, I am sure) so many times, I dont dare to hope..my gut says Badosa will win. Let us see how that goes!

The Tennis Podcast did a few "Olympics Relived" episodes during what would have been the Olympics last year. Paes was one of those featured. He said it was the highlight of his career, but that it was especially meaningful to him, as he was conceived at an Olympic Games. Yes, his parents were both athletes at the Munich games in 1972, where there was the terrorist attack on Israeli athletes. While the games were shut down for a few days, "there was nothing else for my parents to do", and Leander was the result.

Mugu will break out hearts like she does with frequency. She will reach the Semis, and then will lose her semi and her bronze medal match.
Badosa is looking solid.
I wonder if Naomi's mental approach is regressing. We can all remember how solid she looked in winning her last slam, specially in the semis against Serena. Now, anybody can lose to anybody in the WTA, but 1&4 against Vondrousova, who is not a marvel on hard courts, does not look good.

Very subjective to call Bencic left on hard courts. Svitolina is the most accomplished hard court player remaining in the draw.

Mugu has one slam final on hards, has won Cincy. :)
The differences between the players left will be based on the quality of the breakfast they have the day they play.

Not such a star or leader performance from Naomi., but there will be other Olympic opportunities for her in the future.

I agree they appear to be a strong team and I'm not saying they don't have a good shot at a medal here, I can see it happening. But I think you're looking at this in terms of being a strong duo of singles players, right? But this is Mixed Doubles. I can't see the argument for any other team being stronger than France's Mladenovic/Mahut pairing, on paper or otherwise.

And Elina has won multiple Premier titles on hard courts including Canada and also won the WTA Finals (and was the runner up another year).

The up and downs of your Garbine fandom are just odd @ponchi.

How many emojis do I need to post when I am joking? ;)
My point was that there are no favorites anymore. The 8 players that you have left are as even as can be.
