by atlpam We have tickets for Tue & Wed.
The tournament had announced earlier that Kontaveit would be playing but that no longer appears to be the case. Very disappointed as I was looking forward to seeing her play. Either way, it looks like a great line-up.

Other than Shelby Rogers and Emma Navarro, are there any other locals who tend to play? Seems kind of unusual for a tournament in a smallish city to have a few really good/notable local players. (Yes, I just called Navarro good after slamming her wild cards into Monterrey and Indian Wells.)

by ponchi101 It has always been a tournament that has had a rather elite entry list, despite being "small". Sort of like Monterrey a few weeks ago, which was super tough for its category. I would like to go watch it.

Any guesses why? Why do Europeans stick around after a long slog in the US for the Sunshine Double?

^ For the amazing opportunity to play Emma Navarro in the main draw, obviously.

Together with Hilton Head Island (which is no longer in the calendar), it was famous for being one of the most relaxed, easy going, fun tournaments. Word of mouth amongst the players.
And it pays way better than Bogota, the other option, plus you are closer to Europe once you are done.

Touche!

by atlpam Not sure why the tournament gets such a good draw other than a long history of supporting womens tennis. I would expect top US players and foreign players who train in Florida. This will be my first time attending this tournament.

by ponchi101 There is no way Iga plays this. No way. She has the #1 ranking in the bag. It is a very good tournament, but there is nothing to gain.

You'll always have Shelby Rogers and Emma Navarro. Kudermatova won last year and has continue to ascend. I would be excited to see her. But yeah, would be nice to have some stars.

Leylah and Badosa are still playing as of now. Jabeur will be fun to watch. I like Collins, personally. Maybe they will give Iga an appearance fee she can't refuse.

by ponchi101 Leylah will play. She knows that those USO points come off in Sept and her ranking depends on them too much.
Emma SHOULD play. There is one person that can't say anything about fatigue and scheduling. She has been free to do whatever she wants after every Wednesday of every week.
Garbie should have played, but who knows what injury she is nursing now. But she looks like an iffy pick for the RG SP, even for the first round.
And yes, Atlpam, I am sorry I jinxed that appearance. But you should be able to get some other good players in. Badosa may stick around.

Well... in the interest of helping you to find some interest/enjoyment at the tournament...

If you're into a bit of a novelty, Leylah's younger sister Bianca got a WildCard into the qualifying, and plays tomorrow morning.
She's ranked #729... so it's rather obvious why she got the WildCard...
Of course, this is the tournament where Emma Navarro always gets a WildCard into the main draw, so...

If you're open to even further novelty, Carol Zhao of Canada is also playing the qualies tomorrow (right after Bianca's match, on the same court)... and if you're so inclined, you can ask her about her singing career...

We have tickets for Tuesday & Wednesday. Rain in the forecast for both days but hopefully with enough breaks to see some good matches. Definitely hoping to see Iga, Leyla, Badosa and Jabeur. I plan to check out as many players/matches as time & weather permit.

by ponchi101 Good luck, and have fun!
And please, post some pictures :)

I agree.
I don't have a huge problem with these types of withdrawals - except that I think they should be done sooner. I mean, if ponchi knew a couple of days ago that Iga wasn't going to play here, I'm sure Iga knew...

Really - once Iga reached the Semis in Miami - win or lose - she had probably decided not to play Charleston. Perhaps she even told Charleston this.
What I don't like is that they so often wait until late to announce these withdrawals - particularly with the top and/or popular players... And the reason they do this is in the hope that they'll sell a few more tickets to people who want to see the player who is withdrawing.
I'd like to see more honesty and transparency and more respect given to the fans who purchase tickets.

by ponchi101 Just say: "I am beat. I need a few days off".
I know this is over the top, but it is kind of insulting to the losing player, in this case Naomi, she just crushed.
"Oh, I have to retire from the next tournament because I have an arm injury". After you just plastered a very fine player 6-0 in the second set. With an arm injury.

by JTContinental Badosa and Pegula are veering into "how can we miss you when you won't go away" territory for me. Take a week off already!

Sabalenka also plays every week, but I can forgive her because she loses in the first round every time.

I know this is over the top, but it is kind of insulting to the losing player, in this case Naomi, she just crushed.
"Oh, I have to retire from the next tournament because I have an arm injury". After you just plastered a very fine player 6-0 in the second set. With an arm injury.
I do think it's feasible that your arm might need some recovery when you just spent the last month ripping winners like you were firing them from a cannon.

by ponchi101 Sure. But that is what we are saying. She can be and probably is tired. But that does not equal to being injured.
So take your time off. We are fine with that.

I agree, I could do without this bit of polite theater. I always figured it had something to do with contracts between the tour and tournaments - like, withdrawals had to be categorized/certified as injuries for breach-of-contract reasons. We all know that "injury" could mean anything from soreness to a broken bone.

I don't doubt that Iga has an arm issue of some sort. I'd be surprised if something wasn't achey by now. It could be more of an "injury" that she has just been managing well but doesn't want to push any further.

Regardless, no one is surprised. Comes with the territory. Just the realities of an individual sport.

by Deuce Shelby got her feet caught in the clay and fell when she was serving for the match... scraped up her knee.
Thus far, that's the turning point of the match, as Kanepi won the 2nd set 7-5, and pretty much walked away with the 3rd set...

To Shelby's credit, she didn't retire from the match, as so many others have done recently. That might have had something to do with it being her hometown tournament, and not wanting to disappoint the crowd.

Also to her credit she didn't run to the sideline as if she'd been mortally wounded either. You could see the fall affected her after the adrenaline rush wore off.

by atlpam Managed to catch bits and pieces of several matches today, including Hailey Baptiste, Bencic, Sloane, Riske vs McNally, and Pliskova vs Zavatska (before the storms moved in). Zavatska has great defensive skills forcing Pliskova to hit another ball.

Power was out when we got back to the hotel and just came back on. Tomorrow’s weather forecast isn’t looking great, which is disappointing as there are a lot of players on the schedule that I’m hoping to see play.

by Deuce Yeah, the Houston ATP tournament is also suffering from bad weather postponing a bunch of matches. Both tournaments are being played on clay, which is the surface most forgiving to wet weather, of course. But there are limits to its capacity to absorb/drain the water.

Next time, you should buy tickets for the nice days. :D

Meanwhile... 2 days into the tournament (not even 2 full days, due to the weather), and 2 in-match retirements in Charleston, as the disturbing trend of at least 1 withdrawal or in-match retirement per day continues...

Hope the weather forecast will be all wrong and you will get to see a full day of action tomorrow. Fingers crossed

About the retirements. This is one thing that happens when you have a sport that does not carry a lot of statistics: you can't judge whether the retirements are taking place due to a new phenomenon that is truly a risk for the players ("35% of retirements are due to injuries to players legs/ankles/feet", for example) of if the retirements are due to something bland ("40% of retirements are happening due to players suddenly losing a second set and feeling they have had enough").
I remember once at RG that Marat Safin asked for the trainer. The Parisian crowd started to boo him and he waved him away, which only incensed them more. He then lifted his right hand and the camera was able to see the dimension of his blisters; you could see the raw flesh exposed.
The crowd shut up.
The trainer came in and basically told him there was nothing to be done because there was no clean/dry flesh to apply the bandages. So he retired, but that day, that was completely understandable.

by Deuce I maintain that human beings are not more physically fragile today than they were 20, 30, 40 years ago. But when you compare apples to apples, there are far more in-match retirements and in-tournament withdrawals today than there were back then.
And so, if the human animal is not more physically fragile today than in the past, it must be because the definition of 'injury' has changed drastically - in that players today are much more prone to retire with what were deemed mild injuries 20, 30, 40 years ago.

While some may argue that the game is more physical today than it was back then (this is debatable, as I remember watching Pat Rafter serve & volley from up close 25 years ago, and that was just as physical as anything done today - probably more so). But even if we accept that the game is a little more physical today, it is still a non-contact sport. And, most significantly, the players of today are in better physical condition than the players of yesterday - they train more, they have access to training methods that yesterday's players did not have... and still, there are more retirements today than there were back then.
Thus my conclusion that today's players are significantly more spoiled and feel far more entitled than yesterday's players - because of the huge increase in money, sponsorships, and attention they get as compared with yesterday's players.

by Deuce In all my years of watching tennis, I have never seen a player who beats herself more than Sabalenka. Even when she wins (as she did today), she still beats herself more than her opponent beats her.
She tried really hard to give the match to Riske today, but couldn't quite accomplish it.
Better luck next time...

by atlpam Saw more tennis today than we expected - caught some of Anisimova, Maddy Keys, the end of the Pliskova Zavatska match (highest quality match that we saw), Sabalenka (Allie Riske is a tough out). Watched a little of Rybakina but was annoyed by her coach talking to her the whole time. Saw the end of Fruhrvitova vs Bencic. Definitely potential there. Saw the beginning of the Badosa match before they cleared the stadium for lightening, at which point we decided we were done for the day. Disappointed I didn’t get to see Jabeur and Fernandez, but a good trip overall. Seats in the main stadium were good (200 level). Apparently we were visible on TV at one point. Once I get home, I’ll try to clean up and post some pictures.

by Deuce Glad you got to see an almost complete day of tennis...

Navarro's dad intervened tonight and created a thunderstorm just as his daughter was about to lose to Jabeur (3-6, 2-5).
That will only take 5 minutes to complete, obviously (unless Mr. Navarro makes the rain endure for the rest of the week)...

It's quite wet right now (even on clay), with the rain continuing, and thunder and lightning still around, and no sun to help dry it once it stops, obviously... so it's looking like Leylah probably won't play tonight.
I estimate they'll give it until 10:30pm or so - and if Jabeur and Navarro aren't on the court by then, Leylah won't be playing tonight - which means she may have to play 2 matches tomorrow.

And, of course, there was the daily in-match retirement today - Zheng retired at 2-5 in the 3rd vs. Alexandrova. I don't know the story there - but unless she fell and broke her leg, retiring at that point in the match is not a good way to create a positive reputation. It's very disappointing, as she's young (19), and I see her as potentially being the dominant player that people thought Sabalenka would be.

by Deuce Play cancelled for the day (night).
Jabeur and Navarro finish tomorrow, as the 2nd match on centre court (1st match begins at 11am), and Leylah vs. Linette are 2nd on court on Althea Gibson (first match there also begins at 11am).

I heard there was a lightning strike on the grounds last night. Weather definitely got ugly again last night so no surprise they had to cancel the rest of the night session. I saw the Zheng score but did not hear any details as to what caused her to retire.

by Deuce The Order Of Play right now has Leylah vs. Linette as the 2nd match on Althea Gibson court, and the winner of that match facing Kanepi in the 4th match on that court. There is no indication that the 4th match will only be played after a certain hour of the day.
Apparently Linette has a doubles match scheduled today, as well, and so could potentially play 3 matches today - which is ridiculous.

It would also be ridiculous to have Leylah or Linette play their second singles match potentially 90 minutes or 2 hours after their first singles match.

Meanwhile, the winner of Jabeur - Navarro gets a significantly longer period of rest before they must return to play their second match of the day, even though the completion of their first match will likely take about 5 minutes, as Jabeur is up a set and 5-2.

Unless they know something which is not indicated on the official Order of Play, this is very strange scheduling.

by Deuce Anisimova over Sabalenka in 3. Sabalenka won the 1st set.
Anisimova did what she had to do... but Sabalenka once again did her best to give the match away. This time, she succeeded.
Sabalenka had completely disappeared in the 3rd set, and Anisimova was up 4-0 when she lost a first serve due to a second time violation (which seemed unwarranted to me, as she was starting her service motion when it was called). She got broken in that game, and Sabalenka won the next game on serve easily. Anisimova was clearly flustered by the time violation penalty. But Sabalenka didn’t take advantage, losing Anisimova’s next service game at love, not putting even one return in play.
Plenty of double faults at bad times for Sabalenka, as well...

Meanwhile, Jabeur, of course, finished off Navarro - it didn’t even take 5 minutes - closer to 3 minutes.

And the original ‘Coco’ - Vandeweghe - (a ‘lucky loser’) surprisingly beat Pegula in 3... Interesting 3rd set - Vandeweghe was up 5-1... Pegula narrowed it to 5-4, then, serving to tie it at 5, Pegula ran up for a short ball and hit a winner - but in so doing, she just barely touched the net, giving Vandeweghe a match point, which she converted.

by meganfernandez In the previous round, Gasanova wouldn't shake Vandeweghe's hand.
I watched some of the first set of Sabalenka-Anisimova, and Anisimova was very frustrated. Couldn't get anything going on Sabalenka's serve - which has improved. Good turnaround. I was surprised to see the result.

After that first set, I thought she had turned things around for the year. Oh well. Rough road this year, but last year was very good. Her results might always be up and down. Her serve is better, at least. Very good in the first set.

^ ... and not very good in the 2nd or 3rd sets.
She might actually be the most inconsistent player within a match in the history of tennis.

by ti-amie

by Deuce This rain/weather delay, which looks like it will last a total of about 90 minutes, is not good for Leylah and Linette, as the winner must play another match today - and in Linette's case, also a doubles match today.

On the one hand, it allows them to rest now... But on the other hand, it pushes the entire schedule back by 90 minutes, thus potentially condensing the matches, possibly giving less time between matches for the winner.

Leylah was ahead 5-3 in the 1st set when play was stopped.

by ti-amie

by Deuce Leylah and Linette are in a 3rd set, exchanging breaks of serve.
The fact that they're playing 3 sets doesn't bode well for the winner, who'll have to play another singles match today.

by ti-amie And Leylah just broke to level the third set at 4 all.

by ti-amie Linette takes the match after a somewhat messy third set over Leylah.

by Deuce Incredible.
The 3rd set was nothing but successive breaks of serve.
And in the last game - which lasted about 3 hours -, it looked like neither player wanted to win (maybe because they knew they'd have to play again today!). Leylah saved 7 match points against in that last game. Between Monterrey, Indian Wells, and today, Leylah must have saved more match points against her than any other player this year. It's great that she can battle and save so many... but the goal should be not to get herself in that position so often, of course...
Leylah also had 3 or 4 break points in that last game today to even the set at 5... In the end, Linette finally held serve.

It wasn't a very well played match, but it was certainly dramatic and exciting.
Leylah will definitely feel this loss, as she had her chances.
Now she has to convert back to hard court to play Fed Cup next week. Then back to clay after that, of course...

by Deuce Anhelina Kalinina might be one to watch. She's had a nice past few weeks.
She's currently at a career high ranking of 42...
She just beat Cornet in two tight sets, and 20 minutes later is now on another court to complete her doubles match (with Bencic), which is re-starting at 2-2 in the 2nd set...
Kalinina is not a kid - she's 25 years old... but some players bloom later than others. I'd keep my eye on her this year and next year.

Meanwhile Magda Linette is back on the court playing Kaia Kanepi, after beating Leylah earlier today.
Linette's doubles match is still on the schedule for later tonight, which is ridiculous (a withdrawal in THIS kind of situation is understandable if the doubles match absolutely has to be played tonight).

...And Jabeur just beat Begu in 2 straightforward sets to get herself into the Quarterfinals.

That's good... but it really only postpones the problem if she keeps winning.

She just won the 1st set vs. Kanepi - which, given the neverending match vs. Leylah, is impressive.

Why are there only 2 Quarterfinal matches listed for tomorrow? It must be because they don't see the point of writing 'TBD vs. TBD'...
Tomorrow is Friday, and the Finals are on Sunday - so all the Quarters have to be played tomorrow to prevent another day where players will have to play 2 singles matches.

So if Linette wins vs. Kanepi tonight, she must play her Quarterfinal singles match tomorrow. And if she wins her doubles match tomorrow to get into the Quarterfinals, then she'll have to play one singles match and 2 doubles matches tomorrow.
Such are the rewards of success, huh...

by Deuce And Linette is about to commence playing her 6th singles set of the day, as Kanepi broke her in the last game of the 2nd set.

Linette looks exhausted - and by that look, one would say that if she was going to win this match, it would have had to have been in straight sets. Based on her body language and the way she looked in the last game, I can't see her putting up much of a fight in the 3rd.
But if Kanepi starts spraying balls - as she sometimes does -, it may resurrect Linette...

Based on her body language and the way she looked in the last game, I can't see her putting up much of a fight in the 3rd.
But if Kanepi starts spraying balls - as she sometimes does -, it may resurrect Linette...
Or... I could be wrong.
Linette, 6-2 in the 3rd.
Honestly, I would have given her a standing ovation if I was there.
She looked completely exhausted between points... she dragged her feet shuffling to the chair on changeovers in the 3rd set...
During those 3rd set changeovers, there was a doctor with her, making sure she was surviving.
She not only survived - she won.
Bravo. Bravo.
I am totally surprised that Linette won! Deuce isn't kidding. She looked like she was going to collapse walking back to her seat at the end of the second set.
She lost easily today, though - love and 2 to Alexandrova. Understandable, given what she did yesterday. No gas left in the tank...

She's on the court again right now in a doubles match. If she wins, she is scheduled to play another doubles match (Quarterfinal) right after this one.

Bencic beat Badosa in 3 sets today, which I'm surprised at. Perhaps Badosa is not completely recovered from whatever ailment weakened her last week in Miami.
Anisimova is, predictably, plowing through Vandeweghe right now...

by Deuce Well... Linette and Klepac won their first doubles match - in a 'match tiebreak', naturally (that was their first round doubles match - 2 days before the Final)... they did their on-court interview, in which it was mentioned that they would go rest for a bit, then return to the court for their second doubles match of the evening (which is already the Quarterfinal, as the draw is small)...

Then, about 15-20 minutes after they left the court, there was an announcement that their Quarterfinal doubles match is postponed until tomorrow at 1:30pm.
That makes sense, as, rather than have Linette play 2 long matches yesterday, then 3 more matches today (1 singles, 2 doubles), it's better for her to play 1 singles and 1 doubles today, and potentially 2 doubles tomorrow.

by Suliso Nice win for Bencic. She has been playing well the last few weeks (SF in Miami).

by ponchi101 And I thought that on a slow surface Paula would have had a bit of an advantage. I say she has a good chance against Alexandrova.

Right you are. :)

by Deuce Anisimova played really well in the 1st set, while Jabeur did not play well, and was frustrated - 6-2 Anisimova.
The 2nd set was almost the exact opposite - Jabeur couldn't miss, while Anisimova couldn't hit a shot. After about 3 games, Anisimova pretty much threw in the towel for the set - 6-1 Jabeur.
Starting the 3rd now...

by Deuce Jabeur 6-4 in the 3rd.
The 5th game of the 3rd set was key... Anisimova was up a break and it was 0-40 on Jabeur’s serve. Jabeur came back to hold, then broke Anisimova at love in the next game, as Anisimova was listless - not running for shots, etc.
Then in the 7th game, Anisimova woke up, played well, and broke back to go up a break again.
Anisimova has a tendency to get down on herself and give up very easily... but then sometimes she rebounds from that at unexpected moments.
Jabeur then broke right back to even the set at 4... It was looking like the never-ending break fest 3rd set of Leylah vs. Linette the other day...
Jabeur then held, then broke as Anisimova melted away again in that final game.

by ponchi101 Jabeur-Bencic. Two easy going and likeable players. Guess the tournament can't ask for more...

by ashkor87 Bencic has really improved her serve. She used to toss too close to her body, leaving her cramped now it is slightly away, gives her room to hit it .and, I am sure, COVID took a long time for her to recover from ..

by ashkor87 This green clay is always slippery, even more than red - Jabeur will do very well here.. she stays low, maintains her balance, and her drop shots can be lethal here.. I love Bencic, but I expect Jabeur to beat her here..

by Deuce I still say that it's significantly more grey than it is green... :P

And, yes, it is a slippery surface to play on. That's what I dislike most about it - even more than the bad bounces. Unless it's watered regularly (and by regularly, I mean like at least once an hour during a sunny day), it gets quite slippery when it dries, and it feels like playing on a layer of ice.
But if you put too much water on it, it becomes too sticky, and you can trip in it.
Watering it just the right amount, and as often as needed is kind of an art.

Red clay (which is actually more orange than red) is quite different from the grey clay.

I always felt that Har-Tru is an underrated surface. Sure, it can get very slippery when it dries up, but a well-kept court can be fair to all styles. You can serve and volley because the volleys will have penetration, and you can play from the back also. Water it more, and it is slow, a bit less and it is fast.
Kyrgios would hate it. It is the most changing of all surfaces.

by the Moz Hooray BB :D

and OJ a class act in defeat

by Deuce Bencic was the better player today and fully deserved the victory.

As much as I like Jabeur, I find she gets down on herself too easily and too quickly - and that hurts her. I don't mind the throwing the racquet in anger - that can act as motivation to improve... but many times today, she threw up her hands in disgust with herself, and that's not a productive mindset to have - especially when it's repeated many times, as today.

Given what Linette went through with the scheduling this week, this is quite impressive.

by ponchi101 Very pretty trophies. I had not seen them before.
Good win for Belinda. Let's hope she will be in the mix for RG.

Fair enough..I have played on it only once,at the Rock Creek club in the DC area, about 38 years ago...didn't feel like clay, felt like a slippery hard court..

Yes but I have little hope she can do well at RG..Wimbledon, yes..

by Suliso It is my view that Bencic's A game is superior to Jabeur's. This time it reflects in the final score as well. 6th career title for Belinda.

Yes, I agree..in the end she is simply the better player

By "game is superior" and "better player", do you two mean that Bencic is superior to/better than Jabeur when the two play against each other, or that Bencic is superior to/better than Jabeur overall, when playing against all the players?

I remind you that the generally accepted unit of measure when it comes to the latter (against all players) is the official ranking system, in which Jabeur is currently #10, and Bencic is #13.

My personal perspective is that the quality/talent level of these two players vs. all players is quite similar. Their style of play, however, is not very similar. I prefer watching Jabeur, because she is more creative and incorporates more variety, and thus is more interesting for me.
Psychologically, I'd say that Jabeur is slightly stronger - though I don't consider either of them among the, say, top 10 mentally strongest WTA players. That said, I believe that Bencic has become psychologically stronger in the past couple of months or so than she was previously - likely due to an age/experience based increased overall maturity.

by Suliso It is a completely subjective assessment that if Bencic and Jabeur were to play 10 matches against each other Belinda would win 6-7. In principle clay ought to favor Jabeur. Historically Bencic is weaker than her ranking indicates on this surface, but then again the green US clay is a bit unique.

It felt like a slippery hard court because that is what it is ;)
Serious here, it was my surface of choice for years. The club I played in in Caracas had har-tru courts, but not well kept. But I find that transitioning from Har-Tru to clay is very easy. You can slide and play good defense on it.
In the 70's, it showed some promise. But Connors did not like it much (even though he won one USO on it) and it took away from the American power servers, which was its death sentence. When the USO moved to Flushing, it simply would not survive. Now it is pretty much present in the American South (Georgia, Fl, the Carolinas, Texas) but I don't know if in any other places.

Belinda Vs Ons, on multiple surfaces? Only two matches in the H2H, both Belinda's. But I would say Ons would beat her on clay (not har-tru, as we saw yesterday) and Belinda would be favored on hards. But totally a worthless opinion.

by JTContinental This was 46-year-old former doubles #1 Kveta Peschke's last tour event. She will be retiring later this summer at Wimbledon.

Down 0-6 1-4 to Jabeur in Charleston, Kalinskaya retires due to illness.

She also took an MTO for a large blister on her heel.
