by JTContinental Welcome all to our little home for the next fortnight! Don't get too comfortable though, because the grass is slippery and is ready to catch your foot and pitch your forward to your death at a moment's notice. Remember that when you're red, you're dead.

by JTContinental "TMQ here wishing you the best of luck in this year's SP!" he said, insincerity dripping off his words like a viscous liquid.

I'll be your guide during this hellish-to-moderate-because-of-all-the-effing-rain occasion that is Wimbledon--here to tally up your picks, and poke gentle fun at your terrible choices as you go down in flames yet again. How will I do this, you may ask? Why, by rating your losing picks as DANK or STANK, of course! While this may sound like business as usual, in solidarity with the WTA, we will rate your picks, but will not be rewarding any DANKing points for this tournament.

Enjoy!

by JTContinental We are starting off with 184 brave souls on Day 1. Here is our break down

Alison Riske 37
Caroline Garcia 30
Katerina Siniakova 20
Magda Linette 16
Kaia Kanepi 11
Irina-Camila Begu 10
Shuai Zhang 9
Elise Mertens 8
Sorana Cirstea 7
Rebecca Marino 6
Tamara Zidansek 5
Anhelina Kalinina 4
Clara Tauson 4
Danielle Collins 3
Martina Trevisan 3
Beatriz Haddad Maia 2
Lesia Tsurenko 2
Angelique Kerber 1
Ann Li 1
Jule Neimeier 1
Jelena Ostapenko 1
Maria Sakkari 1
Daria Saville 1
Heather Watson 1
Yanina Wickmayer 1

by ptmcmahon No DANK points? I should've faked an injury and skipped then!

by ponchi101 And right from the start: 20 Siniakova's go down.
Man, this is tough... As always.

by karlovicfanclub Garcia did her best to knock 30 of us out of the pool on the first day, but decided to play a good tiebreaker at the end.

by ponchi101 I felt is was early to pick her. In the end, it might have been exactly right.

by JTContinental Garcia and Haddad Maia were both candidates for the "peaked to early in the grass court season" flameout

by JTContinental True to Wimbledon form, a number of matches have been rescheduled for today. If your Day 1 pick has not played yet by the end of the day, you must still make a Day 2 pick.

by nelslus MORE importantly, it might have been helpful if I had looked up Kanepi's record at the Slams at the Wimbledon website. While I was apparently not paying attention, Kanepi has sucked at Wimbledon since 2014. For that matter, except in 2010 and 2013, it turns out that Kanepi has sucked at Wimbledon since 2006.

AND, I know that Kanepi's opponent has out-of-nowhere been winning matches lately. But, I mean, really. She's still Diane Perry. I thought her being Diane Parry would be enough for Kanepi to win. Then again, every week, there's a new Diane Perry.

Alternate theory: Picking anyone always sucks. :gorgeous:

by JTContinental After 4 no picks and 1 player who thought Day 2 would be the best time to start picking, I count 127 remaining--this number may adjust as the Day 1 holdover matches finish up.

The Breakdown

Bianca Andreescu 25
Danka Kovinic 12
Sara Sorribes Tormo 12
Harriet Dart 11
Katie Boulter 9
Camila Giorgi 8
Garbine Muguruza 6
Shelby Rogers 6
Elena Rybakina 5
Serena Williams 5
Dayana Yastremska 5
Kirsten Flipkens 4
Petra Kvitova 4
Karolina Pliskova 3
Amanda Anisimova 2
Paula Badosa 2
Barbora Krejcikova 2
Simona Halep 1
Yulia Putintseva 1
Arantxa Rus 1
Nastasje Schunk 1
Sloane Stephens 1

by JTContinental Looks like Kovinic pulled out? Kherkove in her place

by Suliso What a rotten luck for all Kovinic pickers (I considered it too). She has withdrawn...

by ponchi101 The day's bandwagon goes through, but a lot of red today. Splattered here and there.

Well, that was just rude.

So I assume all of us who picked Kovinic are out? Or do we get to continue since Kovinic's replacement did beat the opponent Kartal? I've never had this happen to me before so I haven't really paid attention to what precedent is.

Sadly, we are done (I also picked Kovinic). You pick a player not a spot in the draw.

Well, my consolation is my ATP pick won, so I half survive for day 3.

by JTContinental We will be having some holdovers again today, so stay tuned for TMQ to make fun of your losing pick if the first round ever finishes.

by munchin I knew Muguruza was a bad pick. She’s not been in good form at all. I have no idea why I went through with it anyway. Now I get my disappointment stretched out for an extra day.

by Cuckoo4Coco Serena let me down at the end . Oh well, still hangin' on by a thread in the men's contest with Krygios barely making it through.

it is one thing to go out when you pick loses. But when they withdraw and you can't do anything about is a whole other level of STANK.

It's also a whole other level of STANK when your pick is up a set and suffers an injury and has to retire, like happened to me with Dimitrov on Tuesday.

Agree. You feel like "At least go out there and have 25 MTO's, BUT GO OUT THERE!!!!!!"
Imagine if we were to play this thing for money. We would need straightjackets by the dozen.

by ashkor87 Can't blame the 'brave soul'. Wimbledon did say swiatek would hit the first ball!

by Leaker I've crashed out but haven;t been marked red :( you can keep me in with a second chance if you like ;)

by JTContinental We are down to 83 players, although several fates still hang in the balance. Meanwhile, rain continues.

The breakdown

ETA: Adjusted number is 77 after the 6 Muguruza losers

by JTContinental Udvardy potentially playing bandwagon killer today, as she takes the first set over Mertens

by Suliso We'll see, but Mertens looked very shaky in the first round

Suliso wrote: Wed Jun 29, 2022 7:10 pm We'll see, but Mertens looked very shaky in the first round
Mertens has looked shaky all year, and came in 0-2 on grass this year

by ponchi101 I took her in the first round, and she squeaked by. Osorio ran her all over.

Me too. Lucky escape...

by JTContinental Udvardy serving for the match

by Suliso And of course loses serve from 40-15. I'm through with Juvan, though.

by Invek And Mertens takes the TB and set 3 will be played tomorrow. At least we have one more night!

Which, if you are riding Mertens, could actually be a GOOD thing.
You know, your health and other mental stuff... ;)

by JTContinental Greetings, losers! At long last TMQ has navigated the tumultuous waters of this week and pushed his way through the rain to land on the shores of Wimbledon. It's time for a Round 1 roundup of DANK or STANK picks, and boy have y'all been racking up the bodies. Including no picks, we lost 101 out of 184 players in just the first round of play. We have no less than 18 (!!!) separate losing choices that I have to write something snarky about--a daunting task, but let's give it a go. Onward to the body pile!

Katerina Siniakova (20 victims) DANK Siniakova's untamed locks sometimes reminds TMQ of a cartoon woman who has been electrocuted, and she certainly provided us with the tournament's first big shocker, knocking out the bandwagon almost as soon as the tournament began. DANKing points awarded: 0

Danka Kovinic (12 victims) DANK She's got DANK in her name and in her game, but pulling out just before your match is about to start with an injury you probably already knew would keep you out of the tournament is a STANK move. Also, this was TMQ's pick, so as usual I am correct and it is Kovinic who is wrong. DANKing points awarded: 0

Only...16...more

Kaia Kanepi (11 victims) STANK Kanepi made the QFs here a million years ago, but has only won two matches here since then. She also only plays well when she's the underdog. Pool veterans should have learned from the French Open to pick against Parry at your parril. DANKing points awarded: 0

Camila Giorgi (8 victims) STANK A pick for Giorgi is always STANK because of her passionless style of play. She is a tennis robot that can be fun to watch when working correctly, but mostly just malfunctions and sputters. DANKing points awarded: 0

Rebecca Marino (6 victims) DANK TMQ doesn't know who Katarzyna Kawa is, but this was a tough loss for Marino, who had match point on her own serve and collapsed. A decent pick that didn't pan out so nothing to snark about here. DANKing points awarded: 0

Garbine Muguruza (6 victims) STANK At this point in time, if you are still picking Muguruza in the SP to win matches you either are a masochist or haven't watched her play for like 3 years. DANKing points awarded: 0

12...to.go...

Shelby Rogers (6 victims) STANK If you had consulted with TMQ (and you did not), I would have told you to actually pick Martic in this match, as she is the better player and is almost always a good pick for the first couple of rounds of an SP. DANKing points awarded: 0

Serena Williams (5 victims) STANK I know it was tempting given the opponent, but it was never going to happen--a wasted pick disguised in an appealing package with a fancy bow. DANKing points awarded: 0

Dayana Yastremska (5 victims) STANK If Yastremska isn't winning her match right away, she often just checks out. TMQ didn't watch this match to see if that was the case, but the scoreline checks out enough for me not to care to uncover anything that would disprove my astute observation. At least she didn't retire down 0-5 and match point with a fake injury. DANKing points awarded: 0

9...left

Tamara Zidansek (5 victims) DANK This should have been a win for someone who was seeded as recently as the 2022 French Open but Udvardy has foiled a number of players in SPs this year, and is poised to take out half of the remaining players in her holdover match against Mertens. DANKing points awarded: 0

Danielle Collins (3 victims) STANK Collins is more of a hardcourt player and Bouzkova is talented enough that TMQ would have moved on to less perilous areas of the draw. DANKing points awarded: 0

Martina Trevisan (3 victims) STANK TMQ is putting a little extra STANK on this one, because not only is Trevisan just a clay court specialist, she's really just a French Open specialist and should never be picked for any other tournament ever. DANKing points awarded: 0

Beatriz Haddad Maia (2 victims) STANK Had you consulted TMQ (and again you did not), I would have advised you that Haddad Maia was the ideal candidate as the average player who does well during a season but peaks too early and then flames out in the first round (I even vocalized this in one of the threads, proving once again that I am never wrong). DANKing points awarded: 0

God...I've...lost...count

Yulia Putintseva (1 victim) STANK Either one of these players was a bad choice, so this match should have been avoided. Both of these players kind of suck on grass, but Putintseva sucks more. DANKing points awarded: 0

Arantx Rus (1 victim) STANK Rus has only made it past the first round once in the last 39 grand slams that have been held, but sure... DANKing points awarded: 0

Nastasje Schunk (1 victim) STANK "Schunk" is the sound this body made when it hit the killing floor. The person who made this pick is certainly a gambler, but not a very good one. We are so close to the end of this that TMQ can't bother to even Google this person to find any pertinent or humorous information about her. DANKing points awarded: 0

And...we'll..finish with...

Sloane Stephens (1 victim) STANK TMQ does not need to explain this; you know what you have done. DANKing points awarded: 0

WE MADE IT! Round 2 promises to be just as exciting as most of you are teetering on the edge of the bandwagon with your hopes pinned solely on Elise Mertens. This was probably a sleepless night for you.

by JTContinental 29 out of our 63 remaining players are still awaiting their fate from yesterday, but here is the current breakdown

Shuai Zhang 1

by JTContinental And now, a word about our R64 losers, specifically about their DANKness or STANKness:

Sorana Cirstea (11 victims) DANK I'm at a loss to explain this loss--there's been a rash of bad luck that has been knocking out a lot of players in this possibly cursed tournament.

Sara Sorribes Tormo (11 victims) DANK TMQ bestows forgiveness on you for thinking Tan was due for a letdown. However, if you read about her response to her doubles opponent's Instagram slam, you'll see that she is unbothered.

Anhelina Kalinina (2 victims) DANK Like at the French Open, TMQ will tastefully refrain from dunking on Ukrainian players.

Anett Kontaveit (2 victims) STANK TMQ will dunk on Kontaveit though, who seemingly has forgotten how to play tennis during the offseason.

Bianca Andreescu (1 victim) STANK Her "comeback" has been a little overhyped. She's improved this year, but not that much.

And that was a match between Ukrainians, so at least one had to lose. :)

by jazzyg My history of never winning a WTA SP continues with Juvan's loss to Watson, but I'm OK with it. Watson is a delightful person who deserved to finally reach the fourth round.

As for the match, Juvan is the better player but just got too tight in the first set, losing a break lead late in the first set, dropping the tiebreak 8-6 and then going away for the first five games of the second set. That's the risk you take when you pick an unproven 21-year old trying to make history of her own.

by Suliso It seems this will be the customary day of upsets with very few survivors left. Not including me unfortunately...

by Fastbackss Will be less than half for tomorrow...

by joanjettson #nevertrustaK

by Suliso Down to 13, I believe.

by ponchi101 Since Garcia and Zhang have one pick each, yes, 13 seems to be the number before the end of the 3rd round.

I understand we are now doomed for tomorrow after this post.
Yep, struck again for the 2nd consecutive SP day.

by dave g Does this mean we move to an updated thread?

I want to celebrate making the updated thread, but have no confidence that I am going to make it through another day or two.
So, maybe, I'll just celebrate making through today. :yahoo:

p.s. JTContinental: We still have 65 people on the ATP side. How come you get all the pools that wrap up quickly?

by Cuckoo4Coco Wow, 13 people left and it hasn't even reached the 2nd week.

imagine if Mertens had lost!

by ponchi101 Today it would have saved 21 people. Previous round it would have been a disaster.

So new, she changed her name twice in one paragraph!
You say Perry, I say Parry. :gorgeous:

No updated thread until the second week!

And the answer is voodoo... :D

JT's more bloodthirsty than you are (which I personally love), just openly hoping for a bandwagon to crash. You've got to wish it into existence.

A lot of us Mertens pickers probably Kerber today assuming it was a a safe pick after barely surviving the Mertens pick :) I know that was a large part of my reasoning.

by JTContinental 2 no picks leaves us with just 11 hopefuls who are just one win away from a coveted invitation to the updated picks and results thread. Who will make it? Follow along and see!

The breakdown

Katie Boulter 3
Barbora Krejcikova 3
Simona Halep 2
Elena Rybakina 2
Amanda Anisimova 1

Exactly this

by ponchi101 And in the very first match of the day, 3 more are gone. Boulter got Taned tamed.

by Cuckoo4Coco Krejcikova knocks another 3 out.

by ponchi101 Wow, I did not see that. And there I was, talking about how she could be a stumbling block for Iga.
The modern WTA. Parity all the way to #100.

It is down to 5 people in this SP. :o

As for Krejcikova I didn't think she was gonna lose this match but I did think there was gonna be more upsets which is when I made up my brackets before the tournament it worked out that Pegula slipped to the one SF versus Gauff. I still think there will be more upsets on the way.

by ponchi101 And somebody picked Anisimova, either for the upset or a very close match. Brave.

by ponchi101 We started with 184 players. If you half the pool every day, by day six you would end up with: 3. At the very best, today we end up with 5.
We are basically picking from 50/50 matches, all the time.

I think that number could be down to at least 4 by the end of today's matches. ;)

Would be funny if she/he won the SP with that bold move before the 2nd week got underway.

That is a very brave move for sure and she is holding her own so far.

by JazzNU Ugh! I knew I should've gone with Halep, shouldn't have second guessed and talked myself out of it. It is truly one of the biggest downfalls in SP. What sucks so much more is when your other picks for the day go the way you thought they would so anything else would've worked better. Only one hasn't so far (Badosa/Kvitova) and I wasn't touching that with a 10 foot pole anyway.

Good luck to those that survived the day.

by New England Nitemare Wowza!!! 5 people left after 6 days of the women's suicide pool!!! My goodness....that has to be some type of record. Good luck to the five folks that are left.

by Cuckoo4Coco Yes good luck to the 5 people left. The next set of picks for tomorrow are tough unless you go with a real favorite that will probably go really deep into the tournament.

by ptmcmahon At this point very hard to say anyone is probably going to go really deep :) Only 5 seeds left, and 4 of them about to go head to head!
