Not sure what's going on because I'm just seeing the scoreboard, but Katie Volynets just bageled Vondrousova in the first set of their match in 20 minutes. Vondrousova only won 9 points.

Re: '24 RG Day 4 Order of Play and Discussion
Ben Rothenberg is full of s**t. First, if Elena is calm and collected, it does not mean that she has to be extra nice to everybody. Especially to the media. They frequently behave like vultures, looking for a controversy. Since Elena does not generate controversy - they dismiss her as not interesting enough. The problem with that is that they did not perform their duties with a proper professionalism. These questions are primitive and it is easy to see why she was grumpy with them. It is possible to be a tennis writer/media person and generate interest basing on the game analyses (see Gill Gross at example). Apparently Rothenberg and his ilk are just not capable of this. They either not knowledgeable enough or not articulate enough. To put it simply - they are just not good at what they suppose to do. And when Rybakina puts them to task, they are getting defensive and try to put the blame on her. They think it is her duty to be creative and interesting at the pressers - THEY ARE WRONG. It is THEIR duty to make pressers more interesting.

I like your post, but: what triggered it? I have not seen any news about Elena or an interview that went wrong.mick1303 wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 11:51 am Ben Rothenberg is full of s**t. Re: '24 RG Day 4 Order of Play and Discussion
There is plenty of reaction on Youtube to Elena's presser. I watched it myself after I saw some videos where observers were criticizing her. She was edgy because it seems that she got fed up with the same questions. But I do not consider her rude in this instance as many suggested.
Interview didn't "went wrong" per se. She was smiling and all. But she made some remarks about the questions being "the same all the time". And this triggered media people.

Re: '24 RG Day 4 Order of Play and Discussion
I watched the presser, listened to the Tennis Podcast opinions, saw Ben's tweet, etc... I have to say, Elena was out of line. It was a bratty and rude press conference. Her comments weren't lighthearted, they were mocking. I'm sure she's uncomfortable, but they were EASY questions and completely relevant. Suck it up and answer them like the professional you are. Yes, they're simple questions. Journalists get one question. They probably have to write about the match; some are working on non-match-related features, but most are news reporters writing about the match. They aren't at a player's practices every day and privy to the inner workings of their preparation and mindset. If they were, they'd have richer questions. Give them a break.ponchi101 wrote: ↑Wed May 29, 2024 12:14 pmI like your post, but: what triggered it? Tennis Podcast mentioned that Casper Ruud has been asked multiple times why he played Geneva before a Slam. He gave a thoughtful answer each time - because they were different journalists. No one can attend every presser and read every transcript. It's part of the job to answer questions over and over. An EASY part of the job.
This doesn't even broach the subject of journalists trying to extract some personality from her, which might benefit her. A topic for another day. Much more nuanced. In the meantime, every player should answer decent questions as best they can. She can keep it short. She can even take a pass. But she shouldn't eye-roll and make fun of the journalists, who are just doing their job. Pretty well, I might add.
I wouldn't be surprised if she apologizes at her next presser.

Kenin! Anyone see it? Did she play well or did Garcia stink?

Well Swiatek - Osaka has been quite the match. Naomi down a break in the first. Got it back, had a set point, didn't capitalize. Crushed in tiebreak.
Now up 2 breaks in 2nd - halfway towards evening the match

Wow, Swiatek about to lose to Osaka on clay! That's a shocking outcome if you ask me.

Re: '24 RG Day 4 Order of Play and Discussion
You just jinxed her but I would say that it is a case of a very good player making another good player earn it. What was the score in the 3rd that made you say she was about to lose? I am working and can only see the live scores.
But a good sigh for others. She can be beat. If you hit big.

Re: '24 RG Day 4 Order of Play and Discussion
When I wrote it Iga was a break point down serving at 1-4 in the third. Not sure about a good sign for others, very few can hit like Osaka.

Re: '24 RG Day 4 Order of Play and Discussion
Ok, I just saw that. Up 5-2, serving for the match at 5-3 and holding a MP.
She is Naomi Osaka. Her credentials are sterling. But, can we say she choked?
