Excuse me, that is British tabloid journalism. That is expected.
I remember a piece, in the 1980's, which literally said "Lusty Lendl" and "Bonking Boris" (Becker, nor Johnson). It was about the "sexual escapades" of tennis players, which, of course, were none.
The bar has been that low for that long.

Steve Tignor, whom I like, wrote in his Alcaraz-Sinner final prediction that Alcaraz beat Sinner in 4 sets at Wimbledon in 2022.

Hard to figure how someone who follows tennis as closely as he does got that backwards.

From this morning's The Pulse, which I received as part of my NY Times subscription. It's not an egregious or controversial error. It's just a basic math booboo... I'm not even sure it's worthy of this thread, but I don't think I've ever had an entry here...

::

In a list I struggled with, this was the easiest choice. I am smitten with tennis’ Jannik Sinner-Carlos Alcaraz rivalry, which has officially dispelled any remaining notion for general fans that Novak Djokovic still runs this sport.

Sinner beat Alcaraz in four sets yesterday — 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 — to win his first Wimbledon title. This comes after the pair’s monumental French Open final match, which Alcaraz won dramatically. Sinner had also lost five straight matches to Alcaraz before yesterday. What a rivalry.

These two, only 55 years old combined, have won the last seven men’s major titles and eight of the last nine. The new era of men’s tennis is here in stone. I honestly wonder if Djokovic can win another one now.

You have to admit, losing a slam final ages you by a lot...

Stupid error, but the other problem is that it doesn’t land as the writer intended. It doesn’t at all make you think “these guys are so young!” It has the opposite effect, actually, by introducing the idea of a 50-something at all. “Both in their early 20s” would have been stronger.

That is my idea of bad journalism, not a dumb mistake, fwiw. Any one of us would make dumb mistakes in the job, and we all probably do in our jobs.

But back to the fun! Image

am sad to see Wertheim banished from the SI page - always look forward to his mailbags..he is, in my opinion, the most fair and balanced of all the tennis journalists - he is out just because of one silly comment about Krejcikova's forehead. who gains by all this? not us, for sure.

He is out of SI? No more Mailbag? He published his 50 Thoughts roundup this week.

I couldn't remember what he'd done to be banished to be honest. Many, many tennis "journalists" have said worse about other players present and past.
